  1. I bought BFD version 1 way back in the 90s. It was by far the most realistic drum program out there. What I loved about it was that the sound you got was 'clean', like studio kits, so perfect for indie guitar artists such as myself. And the sample rate in Vers 1 was higher than in the later versions. I would have continued with BFD 1 indefinitely except that system requirements and new version of Windows made it too glitchy to use reliably (shame really). Over the years bedroom musicians have become less interested in that 'clean' studio sound - they want their drum loops ready to drop into a mix straight out the box. The old school of lovingly tweaking the snare sound and gating the bass and drums seems to have gone the way of the Dodo. I think it's for this reason BFD fell behind in the market. Their base of users were either getting old (like myself) or being replaced with younger kids who treat drumming like finger painting. They tried to keep up with innovations such as Geist, but they were always playing catch-up at that point. That said, I did jump in and upgrade to BFD 3 when InMusic offered the upgrade deal. It was a very good deal at the time (included 3 drum kits for free too). Like others, I went through the painful installation and registration nightmare. The pain that every time I opened it, I kept having to register it again and again and again. In their favour, they did release an update that resolved some of those issues. However, I rarely find myself reaching for BFD 3. Simply because it's a bit fiddly. The interface is not as intuitive as BFD 1, the indexing system is not easy to navigate. It's a shame really because it is a great piece of kit with a lot of power. Maybe this thread has inspired me to give it another shot.

  3. Thanks for the recommendation. I have read that the headphone out was better, but it's also about 50 bucks more. If it goes on sale for Black Friday, I'll get it. Could you tell me whether it works via a usb c port on a laptop or not?....or does it not really make a difference? Because I've got this Usb-c port on my Dell which I never use.
  4. This year I'm only interested in hardware. Pre Sonus Studio 24 C SSD for my laptop (perhaps a Crucial Nvme) I have simple tastes....and far too much software
  5. This looks similar to telephone conference mics that I used to use in the 1990s . We had them in our company for our weekly telephone meetings with the US. The sound quality of those mics was not great. If SSL have upgraded this system and added a post mic processing phase, this might be interesting. However, my worry would be too much room bleed and background noise, especially as you wouldn't be able to get the mic close to your instrument or your mouth. That added distance might add too much extra noise. I'd be interested to hear feedback from anyone who has used it.
  6. Sorry to disappoint, but my oxygen 8 is version 1. I still use it with my laptop (works fine) and I've used it with the phone. It must be something else. 🤷‍♂️
  7. I totally agree with this. 👏👏👏👏👏
  8. I own a few Ujam guitar thingies and, apart from mucking around, I've never used them for anything I've released. The sound is so identifiably Ujam. You can hear it in songs on the radio. And it really turns me off. Perhaps it's simply because I'm a traditionalist who wants to hear musicians play instruments rather than watch kids trigger pads on tiktonk (I'm so glad that fad seems to have finally gone away). I only ever see Ujam guitar stuff as a sketch pad. Just my 2 cents.

    Sampleson deals

I got this email from Sampleson, BRUSHIFY, one of our most acclaimed plugins: a brush drum for finger drummers. You can have it for only $39 (save $20) MELOX, the first professionally sampled melodica plugin, with the expressiveness of a real instrument (including release velocities, noises, key clicks, air sound, and mechanics). You can have it for only $10. And MODEL T, our recreation of the classic EP from the '80s, is 60% OFF. You can have it for only $19 (regular $49). http://sampleson.com/ I don't know if the discount is only for existing customers or not.
  10. Wow! 🤠 Thanks Larry. I always thought my voice was the thing holding my music back. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
  11. Found this on the Samsung community site. Maybe give it a try.
  12. Have you tried downloading Caustic? If that works, then the issue might be the apps you're using. Have you also tried USB-C (male) to USB (female) adapter? That way you can test if it is the cable or not. I remember when I was experimenting I found that I needed to insert the USB C cable in one particular way otherwise it wouldn't work. Try turning the USB C cable going into the phone around and see if that works. Good luck!
  13. Try with a 9v battery. You won't get enough juice from your phone to run the keyboard.
  14. Great stuff. And kudos to the camera crew. They did a sterling job. The video is very slick. It looks like a great gig. Must have been an amazing atmosphere.

    --------

Great catchy tune. I love the guitar riff. Song reminds me a lot of Elvis Costello (which is a good thing) I do agree with Paul Bush though, it needs tightening, especially the harmonies which get a bit messy around the chorus. I'm gonna ask, so don't get offended: Would you be willing to record this with another singer? Maybe give it a try and see what happens. Great tune

    Nothing to Me

Superb production and playing!!!! Super clean, super clear. Good luck with it!
  17. I'd love to hear some other instruments come in - keys or horns? Perhaps a gruff blues singer. The playing is superb.
  18. You know how songs sometimes seem to write themselves. This one came almost fully formed while writing something else. It is probably the most indie pop song I've written in years. I'd be interested to know what people think. Probably going to have to make a clean version for radio play, though. I've made a radio friendly version of the track with some more instruments and remastering. Unlike the other tracks I'm working on, I'm considering pushing this to radio. Any thoughts (as always) greatly appreciated.
  19. Thanks everyone. In response to the comments about Di recording. I usually mic the guitar using shotgun micd, but thought I'd try using the built in guitar mic on my acoustic as an experiment. I tried sweetening it using a 3Sigma Impulsive, but as you can hear, there is only so much you can do to get that acoustic sound. When I get another free morning, I'll try redoing the guitar parts. And @AndyB01 I like to keep my tunings secret 😉 I could tell you....but then I'd have to make you sign a NDA. 🤣
  20. Nothing challenging. Nothing ground breaking. Just a nice little indie folk tune in an unusual open-tuning. I've been unusually active in writing recently and this one came together in a flash. I might need to return to it at some point to sort out the vocals....if I don't get lazy I think it could make a nice album filler.
  21. Good to know. I'll see what I can do. Thanks
  22. This is an as yet un-titled guitar piece I've been working on. I love using alt tunings, and this 'flowery' tuning produced this track. In terms of the mix - the main acoustic guitar is played directly into the soundcard via a pickup jack (not the best of sounds, but I've tried to keep the worst of the squeaks and rubs out),- I'm aiming for the kind of sound Thurston Moore has on his acoustic albums. I'd be interested to know if I'm getting there or not. Any feedback welcomed
  23. Hmmmm. I watched the video and I'm not massively impressed with the sound. It sounds like old Casio keyboard presets. It might work for video game music, but I cannot see myself ever using it in a serious composition. Personally I think there are a lot of better options out there for free (the Spitfire Audio for example) that far surpass this, even if they may be more Ram heavy.
  24. Song's going to be premiering on Radio Wigwam's Eclectica hour this Thursday and Saturday 🍺
  25. Last mix (I promise) - I think this is it.
