  1. I think what may happen often is that developers move on to the latest version of the Windows OS, tools, and programming libraries for new product development. Part of that issue is Microsoft stops supporting older development kits after end-of-life. So the testing for backwards compatibility may not always be the highest priority due to developer salaries and project budgets, and lack of MS support. So with that in mind, I would suggest that if you are running old programs on the latest OS without issues, consider yourself lucky, or just the benefactor of initial good coding design. If you really want to be assured of old programs having a long lifespan, keep an older PC around and wall it off from the future!
  2. I think that these titles will be more in line with their Beatmaker series in regards to the price points...
  3. I hate to be the guy, but as much as I like the sound of SoundPaint, sampled synthesizers do have quite an unappealing appetite for drive space. I totally understand the need for sampled real acoustic instruments, such as orchestras, where physical modeling really isn't there yet, except for some pianos. For the rest, I'll be sticking with synth models and emulations, exception being Syntronik...
  4. So was mine! Good point though! Another good example for zero bloat is Reaper! The installer is a whopping 14MB...
  5. I am a PC person, but do have an old Mac Mini that used to be strictly for family secure online banking. Until the bank refused to support the old Safari browser, and Apple refused to update Safari, and Google and Mozilla stopped support for their browsers on the old MacOS. ? I might get curious and drag the old Mini out just to play around with! But without current browser support, it's probably near useless...
  6. I tried the demo. Not quite my cup of tea.
  7. To the first one here who tries this, please let us know what you think!
  8. Yep, but Dexed workflow is not very user friendly. It's patch management is a throwback to 80's patch carts. It really needs a dedicated patch librarian. If you own, or have owned a real DX7, you might love it. I downloaded an astronomical number of free patches for Dexed, but found in unmanageable to organize them. Myself, I prefer the Casio CZ phase distortion synth. It was my first synth and I still have it. And I have two working emulations of it.
  9. Hence one reason that Apple is so successful. They control their standards and do not have to support everything. Walled garden.
  10. I would 2nd the vote for Cinemateque, well because anything by Daniel Stawczyk! https://www.stawczyk.com/ Analog Essentials is another good one, by AAS. It provides a good selection of usable stock analog synth presets. Lots of Arps, Bass, Pads, and Synth sounds.
  11. That should be fine with USB 3.1. The data throughput on sequential and random reads/writes should exceed what I am getting on my SATA SSD. See the linked article regarding a real world speed test with an external SSD over USB 3.1. https://www.techspot.com/news/59982-here-how-fast-usb-31-real-world.html My stats below were captured with Crystal DiskMark. The top 2 rows are sequential, while the bottom 2 rows are random. The Q and T represent the number of queues and threads used in each particular test.
  12. Hmmm... I used to get those browsing/loading preset crashes with the initial release, and shortly afterwards. Then IK optimized the sample streaming st some point. A few of those ST4 instruments are huge! Then I switched to SSD for everything except archives. Anyway, all of my sample content is currently installed on a dedicated SATA internal SSD. So samples load quickly now, and there are no crashes while auditioning sounds.
  13. I updated my SampleTank 4 last night. Today, after reading this, I deliberately looked for my first Cakewalk test project with ST4 that I saved in CbB over 2 years ago. I opened it up in CbB and no crash! Do you wait for the CbB plugin scanner to finish before opening up any projects? I do. Not sure that means anything, but it did occur to me that if a project goes looking for a plugin that was updated since the previous scan, there might be a chance for mismatch with the new VST on the drive?
  14. Yikes! I believe that this is where I'll just stick with my Arturia DX7 V ...
  15. I'm sure that I had an earlier version of Sonar Power as well, but it disappeared during a move 10 years ago... I had Sonar software from S1 up through Sonar Platinum for life, and only skipped a few updates. The Sonar Power series was like the "missing manual". ?
  16. Rule #1: NI vouchers are useless. Proceed to Rule #2. Rule #2: Read Rule #1 again. ?
  17. I started collecting AAS sound packs for the AAS Player long before I ever bought any of the Professional Series instruments. I liked the overall sounds of Chromaphone the best and eventually jumped in at Chromaphone 2 on half-off sale, and then upgraded to Chromaphone 3 and all the rest of its packs. My next pick was the Ultra Analog VA-3, for half-off. Have most of the packs for it now. I have a few packs for String Studio and Strum, but I'll probably wait for that. Fyi, I should mention for the folks that may have Ableton Live Suite, there are a few stock Live software instruments included that Ableton provided in collaboration with AAS. They're Analog, Collision, Electric, and Tension, which are based on Ultra Analog, Chromaphone, Lounge Lizard, and String Studio, respectively. They sound about the same, while utilizing the Ableton Device UI instead of the AAS original UI. And although they have a lot of factory presets, I have not compared the lists against any of the AAS originals.
  18. Three things I have learned about the company mentioned in the OP. 1. When they release a new product. wait a year and chill. They will eventually fix the major bugs with the updates. 2. Make peace with the Product Manager, and become one with it. 3. Don't buy individual products. Wait for their Total Studio deals or group buys. The free stuff rocks!!! ?
  19. Yes, select by bank and choose Pigments 3.5.
  20. It appears that the original Iris 1 owners, including Simon, did a major beat down on the v2 update due to disappointment. Long thread at KVR outlines the issues. So obviously it can be a touchy subject for them. But to anyone else who came along after Iris 2 was out (i.e., no history with v1), such as myself, it is a great synth and definitely a good value when bought on sale!
  21. I found the official Iris 2 Supported Hosts list at iZotope: Supported Hosts: Ableton Live 9–11, Cubase 10–11, Digital Performer 10, FL Studio 12–20, Logic Pro X, Nuendo 10–11, Pro Tools 10–2021, Reaper 4–6, Reason 10, Studio One 4–5.
  22. This thing sounds pretty good! I haven't figured out exactly what it's doing yet, but it sounds good!
  23. Don't forget to check out AudioDeluxe and JRRshop for the best deal on that AAS pack! AudioDeluxe is giving away a free Melda EQ (MFreeformAnalogEQ) with any purchase until Dec 24th! https://www.audiodeluxe.com/products/virtual-instruments/applied-acoustics-analog-orchestra-sound-pack-ultra-analog-va-3
