  1. Hello Michael,

I listened to your songs (albeit on small computer speakers) so I can't comment on the mixes in depth, but I do think the vocals tended to be a little too dry.  Try some reverb/delay and I think you'll be happier with them.  Also, I think your mixes are better than you think they are.  In my opinion, part of your perception that they aren't that good is because your comparing your material with other material that's been professionally mastered.  Good mastering can bring the best out of a track.  There are several mastering services online that are not terribly expensive.  You might try one of them and see if you're happier with your material.  If you want to try your own hand at mastering Izoptope has Ozone 8 on sale right now and Waves has Abbey Road TG Mastering chain on sale as well.  Both have demos if you're up to it.

Best of luck with you music.

I added the license to iLok first, then ran the installer, so it didn't ask when I started up. SLightly different method to get installed, but same result. A free and totally usable clipper/saturator.  Really digging this plugin!   :)

Mibby, me too.  I'm hoping this is a "teaser" and that others in the same vein will follow.

    installed a VST3 here ?

When I tried to install it I kept clicking VST3, but it never installed.  Finally I clicked VST2 and in installed right away.  Maybe it's just my machine, but I just wanted to help people avoid any confusion if they were trying to install VST3 but nothing showed up.  I hope I answered your question.

  4. Just to return this thread to the actual topic for a moment, I downloaded and installed this thing and it is quite potent.  A little goes a looooong way.  It's not bad, but you don't need to use much of it.  And, for what it's worth, if you install it if gives you a choice between VST2 and VST3, but, in fact, will only install VST2.  Anyway, I think it's definitely worth a demo, and I look forward to what they do with it next.

Just checked. Over 200 iLok titles, working just fine.

Fleer, I'm with ya.  I don't quite understand the iLok hate.  In the early days there were problems, but I haven't encountered any snags in the last 6-7 years.  Two years ago I had a HD collapse and had to reinstall everything.  With my iLok stuff I got my backup HD out, reinstalled everything, plugged in my iLok and was off and running without a snag.  Maybe I'm lucky, dunno.

  6. Considering they're free, these things look really good.  Using just stock DAW plugins and the better free ones anybody should be able to do some serious mixing work these days.

As always, thanks for posting this stuff.

Thanks for the info guys - didn't want to double up but likewise didn't want to pass up  a good deal if it added a niche of it's own in the production process.

It is indeed a good deal; but be prepared to spend some time with it.  At first I was baffled, but as with most things, the more you work with it the more sense it makes.

    I would say more...  ;)

There are no theoretical limits for realistic simulation of anything... Including any signal type... Audio is just a small part of whole big picture incoming...

I totally agree.  It's all coming down to processing power.   More and more I see that the only limitation on software is the developer's imagination.  It makes me wonder where things will be in 10 years or 50 or 100.

$59 for what this software can do is an amazing deal.

Yes, it is.  I have only scratched the surface with this thing and it and give you some great results.

  10. A while back I got SampleMagic "Magic A/B".  It was good.  Then recently I got Mastering the Mix's "Reference" on sale.  It was better.  Now this.  And it looks better than the other two.  The rabbit hole is getting bigger and deeper.

This poor girl doesn't even understand how to use a mic, and yet she's still very popular.  Strange how that works, ya? 😀

I'm baffled.  If she can't sing then why do you think guys come to see them?

  12. These days I'm using Slate VMS because it indulges my indecision neurosis ad infinitum, but previously I had been using an ancient CAD Equitek that still sounds great.

And if I might, here is a short story about vocals and mics: YEARS ago I was in an honest to God pro studio playing guitar for a friend of mine who was making a record.  The engineer was using a U47 for the vocal and the singer sounded phenomenal.  After we got done we had a few minutes left so I asked if I could hear myself through the mic.  Now this is the U47, The Holy Grail.  THE Mic to conqueror all mics.  This is the ONE everyone craves today.  This is the one every clone strives to be.  Originals sell for zillions of dollars.  Well, I belted out a line and I sounded terrible!  Now, I don't sound great to begin with, but through the 47 it was even worse!!  The engineer, who was a good guy, went to the mic locker and grabbed a tiny little SC made by TEAC(!) and, voila, instantly I sounded like a singer!  Moral: we all have different voices and you gotta try each mic for yourself!

I have an original Babyface, also, and RME's support has been great. I can't see me using any other company's hardware, at this point - drivers are great, and everything just works. Should my Babyface start having any issues, I'll updated to a second generation.

I'm with you.  The original Babyface is fairly "old" now, but RME keeps it working.  These seem like really great people.
