  1. BFD3 still gets used reliably every day in our network despite the issues (and hearsay from some non-owners). It's a staple in all our DAW templates for the simple reason that it sounds the best, based on a background in tracking acoustic drums. the rollout a year after being acquired by InMusic from Roli was an unbelievably miserable screwup with one of the worst DRM implementations i've ever had to deal with and directly affected active -and- previous projects. Some (one?) user went so far as to claim they successfully sued to get their money back for all purchases. InMusic has since managed to fix the most egregious insults to the existing user base, but it took well over a year, without much to offer otherwise. They claim to be working on M1 support (betas in test?) but it runs fine on Win10. No clue or expectations on VST3, but tbh, not an issue here. There were some issues with some expansions (mismatched samples, mixer channels, etc) but the core program works as expected. many of us prefer the current (vector) interface, as pretty pixels don't make it more usable or sound better. ymmv? as for sounds, we've owned and tried AD2, SD2, Slate in the past, which are ok for duplicating stock/canned/sounds reminiscent of some favorite artist, but they've never cut it for our needs. One of us even took on Melda/MDrummer as a candidate (based on what they did with the piano), but never got on well enough to get the desired results or recommend it. SD3 is probably the most feasible alternate (= expansions with "raw" sounds), but kept weighing that investment against a good mic while pulling up existing projects and bouncing the audio down to avert any potential future disasters. (the increase in file space is a very small price to pay for peace of mind >> best practice for every project.) would be happy to be proved wrong, but not expecting a BFD4 anytime soon as there hasn't been much wrt updates/promises lately, but could be a bit of shell shock as the forums were pretty brutal. fwiw, InMusic has come out with a new expansion since the InMusic acquisition and at least a couple of core FXpansion founders are still on board and appearing to fight the good fight. that said, it's hard to beat the price if high quality drum sounds (especially cymbals) will make a difference in your projects. probably more so than another saturation plug or mastering eq, or most of the alternates. jmho.
  2. there is some serious truth to that. https://www.peacemakermovie.com/ and unfortunately a pretty serious toll on your health. (full disclosure, film made by friends of mine)
  3. Orr, Bourque, and Bergeron for now.
  4. ya, just like vsts ?. somebody must have ripped out the centerfolds. and assuming Geddy must have had at least one Alembic in there...
  5. imagine some serious therapy was needed when they played each other ? try explaining baseball to your English friends, and then have them explain cricket... that should keep this thread on topic....
  6. deets - Bass Culture: The John Entwistle Bass Collection apparently he collected basses like some collect vsts, believe they were auctioned off at some point after his death.
  7. Is the new one page manual included?
  8. @pwalpwal good one on Rainer, he left his mark... Di Lantin https://rainer.bandcamp.com/album/roll-back-the-years
  9. ya, did occur to me ? but figured i was already beating a dead horse... Black Death...
  10. talk about exponential escalation... Black Friday (everyone, thx to US retail) Black November https://discuss.cakewalk.com/index.php?/topic/50785-stl-tones-black-november/ Black Autumn https://discuss.cakewalk.com/index.php?/topic/50921-black-rooster-black-autumn-sale/ what's next? Black Hole say goodbye to your wallet...
  11. sounds familiar. i hate "programming" drums but it's become a fairly productive option given the requirements for tracking space/gear/players/schedule/etc. There are some excellent/usable drum samples (BFD works the best here) and finding the MIDI features in CW to be best in class as loops/grooves don't work for me. VIs are good for blocking out string arrangements and layering in world/synth sounds to add interest/timbre to a project. struggling with horn sections atm. yep, same here when trying to emulate strings & frets. i can hack at keys a bit (hey, it's a percussion instrument...) but capturing a nuanced performance on a virtual instrument is always (mostly?) a 2 step process (notes then articulations when ur a hack). and that's only if you have usable sounds to begin with. a couple of the newer samples/libraries are making me reconsider the potential, but not there yet.
  12. you sound like a guitar player. ? I have assumed audio interface driver settings/performance were the first order limiting factor, but no longer the case? given recent options for lower buffer settings (Presonus, Tascam, etc).
  13. truth, and the same conclusion here based on currently available options. @Jim Roseberry wondering if you ever use or see a need for a DAW specific benchmark vs. one of the "standards" which are typically game/video-centric to assess thermal load vs core performance. (fwiw, my benchmark is courtesy of Acustica Audio ?.)
  14. not sure about the target genre, but doubling the bass line with a bass VI is a classic old school approach to make it work on lo-fi systems. A Sansamp PSA-1 in parallel might work for something more modern and aggressive. i've tried the Nembrini vst but it sounds nothing like the original PSA-1 (which I have).
  15. @Doug Rintoul not "for or against" any tool, that would be ridiculous and understood the intent to be self evident given the 'aid' in Lemonaid. the comment was wrt the AI part and speculating on the relationship between "creativity", "craft" and "art". musicianship has traditionally been associated with some specialized -skill- to create music (re the dictionary definitions). that may be changing with an emerging class of AI based tools. nothing wrong with that. but is it 'art'? AI is essentially an algorithm possibly derived from a seed set of relevant data with a bias towards a preferred result. It certainly makes it easier to get "better" results with minimal effort. but is it 'art'? the only aspect I might have an issue with is the marketing for this class of tools which come across as dismissing the need for "theory" "craft" "knowledge" "effort" "work", etc (ya, those YT ads). the vast majority of results reflect that imho and strike me as diminishing the richness of the collective musical legacy. yet less ye despair in the face of the impending singularity (re Ray Kurzweil ), we may take comfort in just how often humanity has managed to confound the experts. after all, Esperanza Spalding managed to beat out Justin Bieber, Drake, et al. for Best New Artist of the Year (2011 Grammys). ... so many rabbit holes, and so OT. pretentious discussions such as these are better had in drinking establishments with a firm closing time... see ya there.
  16. they moved to Kentucky in the USA (or just the guitar player?) https://www.npr.org/2022/10/26/1131004306/s-g-goodman-tiny-desk-concert
  17. em... more of an observation than a point. the ongoing discussion (elsewhere) has been primarily wrt to the visual arts but can be (is) equally relevant to the audio arts. it's hardly new with quite a few rabbit holes to go down, but the lines between AI / artist are becoming less clear and the question (for some of us) is the potential impact on the "value" or "meaning" of "art". ya, not exactly a deal (same as quite a few other posts here ?) just happened to be on my radar this week.
  18. this^ or... cancel it.
  19. ah, the marketing... love the "AI" part. "mu·si·cian" noun a person who plays a musical instrument, especially as a profession, or is musically talented. - Oxford Languages (Google) someone who is skilled in playing music, usually as a job: - Cambridge Dictionary a person who composes, conducts, or performs music - Wikipedia 1. a person who makes music a profession, especially as a performer of music. 2. any person, whether professional or not, skilled in music. - Dictionary.com ... putting the infinite monkey theorem within reach given the latest advances in "AI", data science and computing power despite the math behind it having some interesting discussions lately wrt to DALL.E, etc., the potential/inevitable impact of "AI" on music and the definition of "art".
  20. 12 months after cancellation
  21. TL:DR - we're all holograms i found an old Rigid tool calendar in my grandfather's garage with her on it. are we cousins?
  22. we have one "purist" that will "accept" 4ms and is good with 2ms, but still prefers hw... we have an AI that allows for buffers as low as 4 samples, but keeping the rest of the wheels from flying off is still a bit dicey, still exploring the potential.
  23. ?? another mastering eq? mojo box? how many knobs does it have? (image not displayed in my original post thx to uBlock Origin > my somewhat clueless inquiry)
  24. ya, same issue here > same solution. so frigging annoying when MS "knows:" what you want.
