Just saw that Ed Mann passed away in June.

Mann’s love of music began in childhood. He received his first drum kit at the age of 11 and almost immediately began performing with local bands. In 1972 he started studying at the Hartt College of Music in Connecticut, but a year later he switched coasts and enrolled at the California Institute of the Arts. It was there that his knowledge opened to a wide variety of styles, including jazz, world music and experimental rock.

Mann first came into Zappa’s orbit in 1977. The two were introduced via mutual friend John Bergamo, whom Mann had studied under at Cal Arts. Months later, Mann was invited to audition for Zappa.

“It happened at two o'clock in the morning up at his house,” Mann later recalled, “and Patrick O'Hearn and Adrian Belew were both there. [Zappa] just put some stuff up and asked me to read it which I did as well as I could, and then we improvised and played by ear, then he asked me to join the band.”

Mann’s tenure with Zappa lasted until 1988. In total, he appeared on more than 30 of the prolific rocker’s albums (including studio and live releases). Mann’s final Facebook post was published on Dec. 21, which would have been Zappa’s 83rd birthday. In the message, he paid tribute to his former colleague with a memorable anecdote.

“This photo is from November, 1977, playing Frank’s huge orchestral bass drum,” Mann wrote. “One night I broke his mallet for that drum during ‘Disco Boy.’ After the show I went to Frank apologetically, expecting him to be dismayed. But instead, he broke into a big smile, gave me a pat on the back and said ‘That’s what I’ve been talking about, and you finally got it.’ The next day of course Frank was back to business, but I could feel that for some reason, breaking that mallet had earned me seal of approval. He didn't say this, but I know he was thinking: ‘I hired him to play, but NOW he's passed the audition.’”

After his tenure with Zappa, Mann remained a popular session musician for many years, working with a wide array of artists, including Andy Summers, Kenny Loggins, Tammy Wynette, Los Lobos and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also played on film scores for some of Hollywood’s biggest composers, including Hans Zimmer, Jeff Rona, and Klaus Badelt.

Is your MIDI device powered up before you power up your PC?  Sometimes (with some gear) that makes a difference. 

Is the device accessible to other software? I often use MIDI-OX to check for incoming MIDI data, but you can use other things as well.

Is the device/interface and all of its ports shown under Preferences? Is the device you are using checked?

Is there any other software using the device/port? Is there any pop-up message saying a device/port is no available?

Maybe you could clarify what you mean by "Pull overt VST instrument."  There are a number of ways to Insert a software synth/instrument, etc.

Does "Not registering anything" mean that the device appears and is selected in preferences but MIDI data is not being recorded either on a MIDI Track or an Instrument Track?

Sorry for all the questions, but these are the kinds of things I do when diagnosing an issue.  Maybe you did some or all of them and maybe other diagnostic things, but I couldn't tell from what you wrote.

I hope you didn't think I was disagreeing with you.  In fact, I was agreeing with you. I guess it wasn't obvious, but when I said "Yes" that was intended to cover the "crossed wires" comment as well as the "pffft forums" comment.  Thanks for the opportunity to clarify any possible misunderstanding.

Yes.  The internet (especially forums that allow participants to interact) is notorious for having the potential for misinterpretations.  JMO: That's why I think the rules that say things like "No attacks" etc. are good.  It's also the reason why when someone unintentionally misreads my intent, I usually apologize.

A few weeks ago APD [Audio Plugin Deals] had Harmony Bloom ($12 USD IIRC**).  While it has gone back up to the "List Price," APD lists the Base Price as $19. So, if you are like me and have amassed APD Rewards (i.e., their "Wallet"), so far as I have figured out how those work, you can use those rewards to lower the price to $19 USD.  Or you can wait until APD has another Buy-Anything-At-Base-Price Sale (which they have had several times over the past year or two). 

Caveat: I have never used my APD Wallet (or bought anything on the Base-Price Sale).  In case my understanding is wrong, I defer to others who have.

Disclosure: I have played with Harmony Bloom, like what it does, and see potential for working it into one of my performance modalities.  I have no financial interest in either Harmony Bloom or APD.

**More Disclosure: Based on my receipt, it looks like I paid $12 minus $1.20 probably with one of APD's product-specific loyalty bonuses they send out midway through Deal sale for some products. So, $19 might not be the best price in the future; also, I have not looked around to see what other vendors are selling it for.

Yes, it was.  Here's what happened.

I suspect it was related to a spam attack from earlier today.  I think I reported two or three dozen that seemed to be coming from the same source, albeit under different names.  When I saw the spam had taken what seemed to be a legit statement (the first quote I posted) and inserted words that tied in directly with the spam (the second quote I posted) and also added a Sad emoji, it seemed to me like an escalation of the attack.  Instead of just posting spam, there was the making of a quote, adding in fake wording, plus the adding of an emoji on the original post that was quoted.

While it could have been done by a human pretending to be either AI or a bot, my concern was that if it were algorithmic, it should be stopped before more damage was done.

Tamanna Bhatiya was one of the names used for the spam.    

There's been at least one new set of 5 spam posts added as of 10-15 minutes ago. This one uses an account in the name Neha Kumari.

Maybe the team already thought of that, might have considered it, and might be working on developing a tool that among other things can play GM sounds which could be made available sometime down the road as an add-on. Maybe they have considered offering this and other add-ons for a charge to help out the people who have never paid anything for CbB (or any of its antecedents). 

I don't know; I don't have any inside information on what I hypothesized here.  From the get go (i.e., from the original post) I have seen your emotionally charged wording.  At first I wondered if you intended to be insulting. 

My children have filled me in on an abbreviation I have seen SJW--Social Justice Warrior (people who ardently argue to rectify what they see as issues for other people).  Maybe we can agree that in this case, you are acting as an SJW-Sonar Justice Warrior (or maybe CbBJW, since you are really talking about the most recent builds of CbB).  😜

 Read the OP. This is about how Cakewalk/Sonar used to have a default GM player. It used to play GM files automatically. It could use the TTS-1 or the MS Wavetable to do this. They removed both so new users don't have options. 

All that is needed to fix this would be to have an option ( Like Ardour, Mixcraft & others) to chose a default GM player. 

I have read the whole thread.  You have been writing for several days as if you do have a problem. 

You have  used charged language.  

If you don't like the suggestion I made, just say thank you and more on. It's really that simple.

Better yet, just accept that the present is the present, the future has yet to be, and you only have control over what you do (or don't do), not over what others do (or don't do). 

Also, if you really, absolutely want that old school GM sound, I recommend getting a multi-timbral GM/GS sound module.  Seriously!!!!!  I have two Roland M-GS64s (32 MIDI channels each) from the '90s that still work.  For you and others that only want to play MIDI files, why are you so locked into TTS-1?  JMO: If you think that software synths are the only way to go, maybe you should think outside the box.  I have been working on some soft synth performance modalities for a number of years but based on my personal experience for something like old school GM sounds, those romplers will save you from having to complain so much. Really!!!!!  Yes, software synths have a lot of benefits; don't get me wrong, but for playing old school GM sounds, I suggest using old school technology.

Glad you found a solution that met your needs.  It's nice to have a variety of options!  BTW, I finally found the post I had been looking for.

To my ear (played bassoon in HS decades ago) and based on the gizmo (mic?) attached, I'd say there's real bassoon audio mixed in there. See also this. (I just started listening a few minutes ago myself.)  Thanks for the video.

As for the vocalist, her facial expressions and gestures match what she is singing very nicely!!

Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems to me you are asking something like, "If my keyboard/controller doesn't have software that allows it to set up zones to route to different software instruments, does CbB have a built in feature to make up for the keyboard/controller's lack of zone-setting feature?"

Since CbB has the ability to use plug-ins (third-party and ones included with CbB), and plug-ins can be used to enable different software instruments to play based on zones, I'd say the answer is yes. In fact, CbB comes with some plug-ins 

For example, on a midi track, you could use a MIDI FX plug-in (MFX) called the MIDI Event Filter.

Also, if you have a midi track that's already recorded, you could duplicate the track and edit/filter notes based on range with the different range selections being on different MIDI tracks, each being routed to a different synth.

Depending on what you want to do, these and other possible solutions might meet your needs.

It sounds like you might want to customize which track controls ("widgets") are shown.  You can create your own presets and select them to determine which "widgets" are  shown. Or you can select one of the "factory" track control presets.

"The Flying Mountains" sounds like the name of a group, maybe a Super Group that does Acid Rock? 🤪

Are you saying (for example) that people who have TTS-1 from prior purchases of SONAR can use TTS-1 in CbB but not in Cakewalk Sonar?

Confirmed on my PC in CbB that by creating a customized Workspace with a docked Control Bar at the bottom installing updates did cause not me to lose the "CB at Bottom" Workspace.

It was reported several years ago as well as more recently that if you tweak a factory preset and use the same name [e.g., "Advanced"] you will run the risk that the Factory Workspace that you didn't rename will be overwritten.

Confirmed an hour ago, with a newly saved "CB at bottom" Workspace. 

For $50, I could have gotten 12 IK Sound Libraries I didn't have from IK.**  For $30, I can get 6 IK Sound Libraries I don't have from HB. For $15, I can get 1 from HB,

**In fact, for $50 (possibly less if they accept jam points on this purchase) I can still get all 12 IK Sound Libraries I don't have with Sample Tank 4 MAX v. 2. See the official IK Versions Comparison Chart.

JMO: Depending on what IK synths/libraries you have / want, the HB options might not be your best choice.  Consumers of the world, UNITE!!!

I am a fan of Workspaces, have used floating  control bars in different locations (as needed, per Workspace), and have noticed some persistent issues, but I have not paid attention to issues whether or not new releases (updates) move a control bar docked at the bottom to the top. 

I assume you are talking about Cakewalk Sonar (not CbB) and that you have the Control Bar docked at the bottom.
