  1. https://discuss.cakewalk.com/index.php?/topic/45952-pre-roll-record/ Hey guys, please add ur names to this feature request. This is more than a missing feature, this is a design oversight on something we use all the time. Honestly, this alone has me rethinking buying the new Sonar. I punch a lot and I'm obviously spoiled to auto pre roll/ auto loop punching so I want a daw that can do it. Anyway, Thanks guys ?
  2. Thanks for that Gregy but that would aggravate me much more than just setting a marker. I need to play along with my song. Not to mention, after a certain point I tend to disregard the click & grid altogether. I like the timing to push & pull a bit.
  3. Thanks Dave. I liked/hearted the post, I guess that's what u meant by adding my name? Btw, I couldn't help but notice there's 193 other feature request. I'm guessing I shouldn't hold my breath. Or tell me, do the bakers have a good history of coming thru on many of these request?
  4. Thanks RBH. Can u please explain how to set up a shortcut to jump forward & back by measures like this? I only know how to jump to markers. And btw, with auto pre roll on other daw's, there's never really a need to change the pre roll or post roll times once u find what works for u. I ALWAYS had my pre roll set to 7 secs. As I said to Glenn, this also helps create a consistent feel for ur punch spot. So yeah, although I appreciate the tip, sliding around a marker is adding unnecessary steps compared to true auto punching. First u have to scan ur eyes for the marker then slide the pointer over the tiny marker then click & drag. Then, unless u set a loop, u have to press stop after u punch in then press a key to return to the marker. If ur only doing a few punches this isn't a big deal but if u do lots of punches, this adds up to a big pain in the butt(& eyes). Auto punch with pre & post roll does all those little steps for u, giving u a faster, easier work flow. Again, I know this from experience. Cheers!
  5. Cheers Glenn. Well, a 3 speed transmission is straightforward too but there's no denying it requires extra steps compared to an automatic. To set a loop, u have to focus on the screen again, decide where u wanna start & stop the loop, then use ur mouse again, then make another click or two. This is ALL completely unnecessary. Also, another benefit of an auto pre roll is that u get used to a consistent set time. For instance, if u have it set to a 7 sec preroll, u become used to that time and can better anticipate where the punch is. I speak from experience, this helps the rhythm of ur punching workflow. Plus, having an auto pre roll frees up the loop to use for something else. Like looping the entire section. Bottom line, a huge part of good workflow is reducing unnecessary steps. Esp when it's a task u use a lot. I'm a fan of Cakewalk but when it comes to punching, I give them an F just for the lack of this simple, COMMON SENSE feature. They need to get on board with auto pre roll like other good daw's. And as someone mentioned in the other post, this should be an easy thing to program into the software. But anyway, Thanks for responding Glenn. I appreciate it ?
  6. I vote "NO" to locked threads! When we whiners wanna whine just get out of our way and let us whine dammit! Most of us here can't afford therapy. This is as close as we get. ?
  7. Hey guys, I just looked up three other daws(Pro Tools, Cubase & Studio One) and of course, they all have pre roll & post roll punching. Looks like Cakewalk dropped the ball on this feature. I also found this thread from last year where someone else was inquiring about this too. Unfortunately all the videos have been removed. I'd settle for the "clunky" workaround but I can't quite follow what's being described. If anyone understands what pre roll function the guy is talking about, please explain it to me. (Warning, the chat features some childish bickering ?)
  8. Cheers John. Well its def not an "end of the world" problem, I'm just trying to get a flow going with the punch process cause I punch a lot. If Cakewalk had an auto-punch function, you'd only have to set ur punch point then hit one key and it'd automatically pre roll, record, post roll & loop(like my old recorder did). There'd be no need to grab the mouse again or set a loop or toggle CTRL W or anything. When ur doing a whole lot of punching, every extra step is aggravating, esp when u know there's an easier & quicker way. But I will give the CTRL W thing another try and see if I can get a rhythm going with it. Thanks ?
  9. Thanks. Yeah, I know about setting up a loop but that takes extra time too. It's adding an unnecessary extra step. I thought all daw's would have an adjustable pre roll/post roll punch setup. It's much faster. I like to rip thru a whole song a few bars at a time. On my old recorder(from 1996), you just had to press "auto punch" and it would instantly pre roll & post roll to how ever many seconds u had it set up for. Honestly, my mind is blown that this feature isn't available in all daw's. Its such a simple thing. This seems like an unthought-out oversight. To have to manually set up the pre roll time with a loop or marker for every dang punch is just unnecessary in my view. But thanks anyway for the advice guys. ? Btw, anyone else with tips on how to streamline & speed up the punch process, please share ?
  10. Cheers guys. I'm still fairly new to daw recording and I'm trying to speed up & simplify my punch recording process in Cakewalk. I know how to drag on the time ruler to set a punch point but is there a way to set up a keyboard shortcut to pre-roll like 10 secs or so before the punch? I find myself having to constantly set & delete markers for punches. This seems unnecessarily tedious. I miss my old digital recorder's pre roll button. And if y'all have any other tips for speeding up punch recording, please share. Btw, I did watch the few YouTube vids on punching in Cakewalk but they're mostly beginner basics. I'm hoping that's not all there is. Thanks!
  11. A lot of u guys sound nervous. I however have a plan. I've decided to hold on to my CbB as long as possible. Hopefully it will stay active for at least a year. I figure by that time Bandlab will have purchased Pro Tools and will provide it to us free of charge. (Bandlab is nice like that) So all you fools go and spend ur money. I'll be here patiently waiting for my free download of PTbB. ?
  12. Cheers guys. Forgive me if y'all have been asked this before but I couldn't find the answer when I searched it. Why when I save as a bundle do I sometimes/randomly get this promt? I NEVER use or turn on audiosnap(to my knowledge anyway). It does seem to occur when I move/nudge audio around. Am I unknowingly losing edits I've made when it saves like this? Please clue me in. Thanks ?
  13. Do u mean they'll be more than two levels John? I'm only aware of "Sonar" & "Next". Are u saying they'll be diff versions of Sonar aside from "Next"?

Yeah, they rarely sound good let alone great. For me, Frampton Comes Alive is one of the few exceptions. And it was touched up very little. They beefed up the crowd noise on one of the four shows, they edited a keyboard intro and they had to fix where a bass drum mic was kicked over. Other than that, it's all natural. Just a super tight band captured on their best shows. But yeah, for the most part live shows are meant to be experienced live. That way u have the benefit of visuals to add to the experience. For instance, I know if I have an off night playing wise, I'm able to make up for it with my upside down finger tapping, my David Lee Roth like high kicks and my buttless chaps. However, I may have to cut down on the high kicks. I keep slipping on all the panties on the stage ?

Good point. And of course, those same musicians & engineers are pretty much all using those same tools too. It's kinda like steroids in pro bodybuilding. It's not cheating cause they all do it. It's become standard practice. They just don't brag on it. Editing music has been the standard industry practice for decades now. Pretty much every album we love was edited in multiple ways to save time & money and showcase the songs in their best light. Those are all good things.

Amen John. However, I don't look at it as cheating. And if it is, then the studio has always been about cheating. Just the ability to do a second take is technically cheating. You can't do that live. And how long have people been doing punch ins, cutting tape, etc? No, I view being a musician like being a NASCAR mechanic. The studio is the garage where we're EXPECTED to build an outstanding car because everyone knows we have the luxury of time & lots of tools. And we HAVE to build an outstanding car to compete because every other pro is using those exact same advantages. Now playing live, that's our race day where we show how well we handle the pressure of the pit with no second chances. But the beauty is, unlike the studio, no one is expecting perfection live. We just need to show that we're not all smoke & mirrors. Even from the pros, we expect to hear a few off notes, tempo fluctuations, etc. Which is why even live albums are almost always doctored. Btw, Tom Scholz of Boston is a big hero of mine. In one of his interviews on youtube he points to a few TALL stacks of cut tape. He says that those are all just the drum edits for the song Don't Look Back. Not the whole album, just one song. He follows that by saying, 'I'll do whatever it takes to get the sound I'm hearing in my head". Bottom line, if editing is cheating then I'd guess around 90% of pro musicians belong in jail. (Even if their producers did the dirty work)
  17. Bravo Tim. I had to give u a like just for using the word "bane". ?

That's a good idea John. I need to try that. Esp since I tell friends that I nail everything on the first take. I'd hate to get caught in a lie ?
  19. Hey guys, I've seen a couple people say that theyre not starting any new projects while waiting on the new Sonar. I'm wondering if they're saying this due to pricing concerns or because they fear problems carrying over their project to the new system. I mainly ask this cause when I downloaded this new EA version, it caused me problems so I had to revert back to an older version. I understand that theyre still working out the kinks but should I be concerned that my current project won't operate correctly with the new Sonar? I'm just trying to figure out if I'm under somewhat of a time crunch(esp since I'm running an older version) or if I have nothing really the worry about as long as I buy the new Sonar. Btw I understand nothing's guaranteed, I'm just reaching out for some educated opinions since I'm still wet behind the ears . Thanks ?
  20. Cheers Byron. I knew they all had bugs, I was just hoping that a somewhat simpler DAW(well designed of course) might have LESS bugs. Btw, I like Cakewalk's workflow & features but to Noel's point about why not just buy it if u use it alot, After my current project, I don't know if I wanna keep using it a lot. To be honest, I'm kinda down on DAW recording in general right now. Its turned out to be way more problem packed then I ever expected. The constant problem solving is frying my brain. After this project, I def need a long break from it. ?
  21. Fair enough. Then out of respect, I will try to sandbag my rage. ?
  22. I get that for the most part. I guess I am guilty of venting & thinking out loud but I def didn't mean it as a threat. In my defense, I was telling the truth. I 've watched my brother use Studio One with very little headache and he gets great tracks. My friend had Mixcraft for years and he rarely fought with it. I've been having the opposite experience. So yeah, if belly aching's a crime... Lock me up ?
  23. My biggest issue with Cakewalk has been all the bugs and problems with third party vst's working right. I do understand that developers need to make money but I'm not willing to pay very much for the new Sonar. I'd go maybe $79 but more than that, I'd rather just buy a new DAW. Even if it has less features, as long it's more stable with less problems. With Cakewalk, I'm constantly having to chase down problems and find workarounds. It 's been exhausting.
  24. Thanks Noel. Btw, will the TTS-1 still be part of the new Sonar?
  25. Hi Byron. I'm still pretty green can u please explain what beta entails? Mainly, I just need to know if I can stick with my current version 28.11.0.21 for the next 6 months. Is that correct?
