Among the Outer Planets - Piano, synth, and strings
Larry T. replied to jwnicholson78's topic in Songs
very tasteful and thoughtful combinations of piano, synths, percussion, EQ'ing and so forth....enjoy listening to it ???? -
very, very good version....your variations of the original's timing and rhythm choices throughout the song are exceptionally well done as is your drumming....as far as i can hear there are parts i would aux track, re-EQ and volume automate to get a different end result, but this is your work so it comes down to what you hear and perceive as the best presentation ????

this is a most interesting, informative post....the song is great, well arranged, played, recorded, now it's just a question of ears and taste as to how it will wind up sounding....i can offer the perspective that most all of my stuff is recorded totally in the green, no yellow nor red in any meter whatsoever, the most tracks i've used is 32, i have used the absolute minimum amount of saturation, limiting, compression, tube emulators, etcetera....i rely on EQ'ing and volume automation along with recording each different drum, guitar, synth, piano, organ, etcetera piece on their own individual track for maximum audio manipulation so as to achieve maximum audio clarity and maximum overall song presentation.... as i've only been doing this for about 5 months listen to the professional's comments....please, carry on ????

Hi Michael....very nice work....enjoy listening to it ????

Hi John, real nice song there, imho: shorten one or more of the verses, bring up/add some jangly piano, add a fiddle, try adding a tambourine, your voice has a nice Levon Helm feel and the harmonies rock ????
-
Hi Jerry....beautiful and brilliant, as always....a writer once reviewed a new Beatles album back in the mid/late sixties and remarked on their "compulsive creativity" which is a description i think also applies to your musical abilities as well ????
-
great work....finger snapping (wood block????) classy touch...the guitars sound great, nice to see the sax get some time, suggest getting some piano in there doing some solo work as the guitars tend to dominate ????
-
Great piece of music, agree it should be longer, totally succeeds in creating and sustaining a very pleasant, comfortable atmosphere and mood ????
-
Hi Makke....very nice song, nice melodies, tighten the drums a little bit, very cool vibe like Neil Young's first solo album or early Buffalo Springfield/Poco ????
-
Hi bjornpdx....very nicely done piece....there's a group from Belgium called Aranis that i think you may find some value in hearing, particularly a song of their's called Finale (it's on You Tube and is about 10:09 long) ????
-
Good song, good production....you've got all the right parts in their right places....agree about the Tom Petty quality to your voice, which is fine, maybe bring up a little....very good work!!!! ????
-
Very well done jack....enjoy this one very much ????
-
Thanks Wookiee....i'm working on putting a vocal part to the song to improve it....Thanks for the compliments!!!! ????
-
Hi Tom....Thanks for your detailed reply....i approach the bass parts on my stuff exactly the same way as i'm a guitarist first and everything else second....cheers! ????
-
Hello jack....i haven't tried exactly what you said above but i will....i like to add some syncopation like on the hi hats at 0:17 or 0:47 and especially at 1:55 which can be done in the Piano Roll after quantizing....thanks again ????
-
Hi Tom, thanks for your input and suggestions....i know i don't comment on your songs too much only because i'm pretty much stuck in my ambient pop wheelhouse and my rock/prog/blues/rockabilly/you name it if it's not ambient related mindset is just not operating like it used to....that being said.... the bass in the song was done live via aScarlett Audio Interface with a CbB aux track created to increase the clarity, impact and options (FX, balance, tones....)....i then switched them over to mono to auto raise their volume and presence by about 3dB's....i don't see a reason to modify the bass as the melodies also were done on their own tracks and are EQ'ed for their places in the sound spectrum for optimal clarity and also aux tracked for other options....sorry to drag this out for so long.... lastly, if you have a chance, can you riff or throw me a link that explains what "And then drop that into the EZDrummer or Superior Drummer's "search" function. That's the little "cheat" I like to use" means???? cheers!!!! ????
-
Thanks jack....i'm a drummer too....i tried all you suggested, plus, i literally recorded the kick, snare, hi hats/intro (using CbB SI Drums VST) on separate tracks and went over each kick, each snare hit, each hi hat hit, etcetera one at a time and used either another instruments cue (piano, guitars, bass) on the wave sample or my ears to set the correct places in the piano roll....i dunno, maybe i'm being overally critical but the snare just doesn't seem to settle in, i think the intro, kick, hi hats and cymbals are all ok, just the snare....quantize won't work with that song as it's not a straight 2/4, or, perhaps, i just have a certain idea of how i think the drums should be played and getting that into the DAW is something i must continue to train my brain to do as playing them live is a completely different way of playing music....cheers!!!! ????
-
Hi David....enjoying Scarlatti very much, great work there....Thanks for listening and comments ? the song has lyrics and i'm going to try to put a vocal on it soon....as i've been playing that song since the early '80's my perspective on it is limited and i do agree it does need a contrasting b section to expand it....that's a great point i became oblivious to over the years....although i think that a vocal might open the song up and give the listener the ability to distinguish the separate parts much easier....cheers ????
-
Thanks jack....the bass is there but the drums and their timing....i spent over 14 hours on the drums to get right and i'm still not satisfied as i feel they are single handedly dragging the song down....moving this to a Work in Progress as i see what my next move will be with it ????
-
very, very nice....imho not a fan of the percussion coming in around 0:43 doesn't serve the song (as if i should talk....my history with DAW drums is not impressive at all)....but, overall, a real good chill song that needs to be longer and have a few more instruments added to increase the power of an already powerful vocal performance ??️??
-
nice tune....although i wouldn't want to be any where near a real pulsar (or a magnetar)....marimba type vibe, steel drums??....bass ....how did you ever get the drums to play so perfectly in time???? is it the CbB SI Drums VST???
-
