It’s pretty easy to use individual tracks to preview. Use Solo Exclusive. I also will use the Ctrl W to make it so transport returns to the start of the phase I’m previewing. You have 3 or 4 tracks with you different takes stacked up. You insert a empty track ( I use track templates) and you set the now time before the first phrase and use exclusive solo listen to each track in turn. Pick the best one and drag that phrase to the empty assembly track. Use the shift key to keep timing right. Move to next phase and repeat. But lately I’ve been just doing the live punch in method using only one track. Sing the whole song and then go back over it listening and punching in the bad parts. It’s sort of the easiest way for me.

So we actually see some action that I hope will get this forum back on a positive pathway instead of all the negativity and threatening to switch DAW nonsense lately. The new Cakewalk Product Centre will finally solve a few ongoing issues like offline activation as well as I can see that in the future it will be our go to for updates and future purchases. It would be very very cool if they also add our legacy products here as well! @Jesse Jost ? @Noel Borthwick? I like it. And did any of you recent Nay Sayers notice the release notes for the CbB update. I counted over 50 Bug fixes! They most certainly did not have to do any of this but they did, proving once again that the developer team really does care and listen. OK everybody back to work and please relax and let them finish Sonar in peace and quiet. If it takes another 6 - 12 months that's fine by me.

Master Buss Too Hot -quick remedy versus best remedy

This is wrong. The OP said they were overloading the Master bus. Pulling down the fader does not fix this issue. If you don't believe me just turn on the Prochannel EQ and you'll see the red light. Notice the red indicator in the EQ and the bypass toggle . If I pull the Fader down it's still overloading the bus But with the Fader at Unity and now I turn down the input gain that solves the overload issue. The Loud Max limiter will easily fix this but it's being fed an overloaded signal so that's not good. Even though I don't EQ my master I often turn it on just for that indicator. I can also then use it like Span for a spectrograph of the frequencies. -

I think this topic has come up many times and always ends up in a p__sing match. Let's not go there. But I will agree that many times when I do manual editing of automating it seems on the edge of weirdness. Just last night all I did was add a node to a flat line section that was at -8db and it drew a jump to 0 db?? I had to undo and try again and that time it worked correctly. It did this a couple of more times. Bugs? You never know. I've been experiencing weird mouse behaviours since getting W11. I guess I should go buy a new wired mouse if they still make them? This is my last one. I don't like wireless mice for Cakewalk.

@Noel Borthwick Thanks for the update and the clarification of the future of CbB. I’ve been trying to tell people exactly this but for some reason people seem to take it as a slap in the face as opposed to being the good news that it is. And I guess some are worrying about cost. I posted the pricing from the old Sonar compare versions page to demonstrate a possible pricing for the new Sonar. This includes Home Studio for $49. I got no reaction. It’s really just a few people who are negative about the company. And thanks for taking the time to fix the minor issues with activation and the splash screen as it was making the forum a very negative environment. You might be loosing a few impatient users due to Sonar taking longer to release than was originally expected. I think the majority of us would rather you take your time and get it right. We still have CbB and if this takes 6 more months then why would it matter. CbB is absolutely the best DAW for all us long time users and I personally couldn’t ever go backwards. The longer it takes the more time people have to save up. If you had put a dollar a day aside since last June you would now have $245 towards Sonar saved up. -

Fantastic! Being a long time bluegrass and country player this is very refreshing to hear something that’s in my radar of good music. Lots of great details in the mix. This totally reminds me of the Blue Dogs. Look them up. You would be famous if it was 30 years ago!

Yes absolutely what ever works is is the best for each person. I just never changed my ways from the days of tape. I still even limit my tracks to 16?

The thing I learned about track templates is yes they will insert any buses used but if those buses already exist and named precisely the same they will use those. But one tiny difference in the name of the bus and it will create a duplicate. This nota big deal except for the Master bus. Even if it’s spelled the same if one has a Capital M and the other didn’t you’ll end up with 2 masters. The solution is to open a brand new project and do everything to create a project template with no tracks inserted , Set it up with buses with effects and colours, icons, the works. Name the sub buses etc . Now when happy save as a project template. Don’t forget the picture for the start screen in the Browser notes section. Now add every possible track you normally use including VST instruments and assign to buses. Now save each track as a track template. Don’t re-save the project template. So now when you use that project template it’s easy to then only add the tracks you need quickly by using the track templates. This way you don’t need to have too many project templates. -
I set them as z open and x renders Did you make sure to use the Bind button in the preferences settings? It should draw a black line that goes from the lettering on the left to the action shown on the list on the right. Then hit bind. And yes you have to restart Cakewalk.

Master Buss Too Hot -quick remedy versus best remedy

I have often ended up with the master being just a tad hot. I always have the Loud Max limiter and the the YouLean loudness meter on the Master. First sign of trouble is I’ll see the Limiter is working too much. It’s job is to catch the odd over my -1.2 setting. Not to squash the mix. The You Lean meter will confirm showing the LUFS are say -11 - my target is -13.5. So I’ve done both and both work fine. Just turn down the master input gain until the desired target is reached. This really is the best solution in my humble opinion. Or sometimes I’ll lower each bus buy the exact same amount. Yes quick groups work brilliantly on this. You can use the faders but don’t be afraid to use the input gains instead. Yes it can change the signal inter reaction with the processing on the bus but in my case buses might only have a limiter so backing off is actually making the limiter work less. It’s a matter of understanding what happens when you do this and staying on top of action / reaction results. Right or wrong my habit is to have target max peak levels for each bus. Example- If the bass bus is reading anything over-6 db it will get a limiter set at -6 db. But I think my targets work best for my backing tracks and not as well for bigger track counts. Therefore getting a touch loud sometimes. -
There are 3 recording modes you can access if you hold the mouse on the control bar record button. This opens the preferences/ record tab. For some weird reason the default is comping. With Comping you end up with a million lanes of garbage you played badly on. Only the last take is heard but all the first takes are stacked in lanes hidden underneath until you open the lanes view of the track. Overwrite is what it says it is and it overwrites the first take and replaces it with the new take. It’s just like the old tape decks. Except we have undo. This is my preference and I get annoyed when I forget to change this with new projects started with midi files which default to Comping. Interestingly Cakewalk Next defaults to Overwrite. Sound on Sound is where the 2 takes are mixed together which was another term from tape recording days . I like to use this with adding more drum parts to an existing midi track. I can’t see using for audio? You can still use Take Lanes in Overwrite mode.

This makes me wonder what happened to Cakewalks association with NI? Wonder when they broke off? Just thinking if they had continued we might have scored the full version of Kontakt somehow. I most certainly remember the 8.5 days and Guitar rig 3. I stayed with that up until X3 which then came with TH3 which I immediately liked a lot more. It was that old Bassman like I owned back when I was 15 that got me hooked. If I’m too lazy to turn on my Fender Princeton I use that. It’s pretty dang close.

Workflow tips for remixing old projects?

I often open old projects and they make me realize how far I’ve progressed in my workflow. Mostly I see that I used split instruments which now annoys me and all the plug ins are outdated and nothings close to what I use now. No problem , midi is midi and audio is audio so it’s really a matter of either using the replace features available for effects and instruments to update the projects. Or as @mettelus said I often use track templates to rebuild. Track templates will also add all the sub buses and effects you now prefer. Then you drag the midi and audio from the frumpy old tracks to the spiffy new tracks. Just delete the empty tracks. The other thing I need to do is convert them from 44.1 to 48. That’s why I made a video about that. -

Win amp is resizable it’s big enough for me and I’m half blind these days Did you use one of the better skins. I use the Bento Modern. But possibly the new version is different. As I said I’m using a version from possibly 2010. Anyhow it most certainly sounds like you have a similar system to me already. Seems like the only problem is the stupid splash screen. X3 will fix that! Have you gotten that fired up yet?

I actually figured out that you can add subtitles to existing videos. I think it’s a new feature otherwise I would have noticed it before. It’s in the same place that you add an end screen. So now all my new releases will have subtitles and as time allows I might add them to the older videos.

My workflow has been really sped up by creating 2 shortcuts. Z key opens Melodyne and the X key renders. . I do sort of what @mark skinner does. I delete any artifacts in the editor. Even breathe sounds in between notes. Careful of some as they can be needed are part of the sound of certain sibilants. I used to use the S key to split and slip edit but then I discovered all I need to do is drag to select and hit my Z key. So this eliminates a lot of blank space as I only highlight where the notes are. My goal is to make the parts I’m working on fit my screen. I like it zoomed in just a little more. So it’s usually one line of a lyric sheet. When done I Re select the clip and hit the X key to render. There will be left over blank clips between my clips so I will delete those. Working with sort clips has many advantages. Later when recording other parts you can visualize where the vocals are in a track. You can spot the chorus by seeing the harmony clips. Sometimes you like the way you sang a chorus later on so clip’s makes it easier to copy paste. Short clips make it easier to set punch points to re sing. I like to Bounce to clips once I’m finished. Somehow I think this gives the CPU a break. I highly recommend upgrading to the best version you can afford . Black Friday is best time to update and I’ve ended up with the flagship version for almost 1/2 price by upgrading each year to the next level. This spread the coast out over time at $100 each upgrade. To me Melodyne is the most important tool for editing vocals and guitars. Pitch correction is only a small part of what I use it for. After all my DAW was free and with Melodyne Cakewalk becomes a very powerful audio editor.
