Not hardware but GM midi files. I was surprised when a few people posted that the MS Wavetable was gone. I really didn’t think anyone used it. And even though you guys might feel GM is dead I don’t think so. I think the way GM was so built into Cakewalk was probably what built up your largest loyalty base. Nothing DID midi better than Cakewalk. So I guess that has now been downgraded with this move. I know it’s unavoidable and you’ll even find me on file with lots of crash dumps from the TTS-1. I personally think it’s in the company’s best interests to find a replacement even if it’s real simple. Why not do like Band in a Box. They include 3 different players as options. Your 2 closest competitors Cubase and Studio one both have GM players built in. There’s a growing market of people who play live music using backing tracks. GM is part of that.

So how did it do? I found the SC 55 was not that great. The bass especially was very farty. I still like my Korg better. Id be curious to hear a sample from the VST version and a forum member did offer to do it but didn’t have time until this weekend. What was a big surprise was that the MS wavetable wasn’t near as bad as I remember it being.

So I can’t help with you question but I can offer a suggestion. I just built a new PC last November. It is a lot of work getting stuff back the way it was. But what worked for retrieving pre sets was if you open a project saved in the old PC all the plug ins will be using your prior pre sets. Just re save them. Example was I was worried about Addictive Drums. I mostly use this one pre set that was 4 year in the making. I opened a typical project and of course AD was the way I wanted it. So I saved that as a pre set and now I’m good to go on new machine. I also did this for a few other important presets on other instruments. I was originally going to ask a similar question but after I did this it is all working perfectly as well as it cleared out pre sets I no longer used anymore. It is nice to start fresh it’s worth the effort. I have all the installers for all those freebies so if I need one down the road I’ll install it. I think I went from 200 plug ins scanned to 30.

It is best to go directly to the Synth Font Website.

Spent a few days on this researching replacements for the TTS-1. Seems you quickly find yourself in 1998. Almost all players are from that era and others are just repackaged sound font players. At the heart of it seems to be Roland. Is it just me or did anyone else notice that Cakewalk just removed the only 2 GM midi players we had. First the MS Wavetable now the TTS-1

You sound like you sort of know what you are doing but possible watching these instructions might point out something you are missing, \ Midi setup https://youtu.be/8xYGKsLHAh0 Using Instrument tracks https://youtu.be/rVWeMsPZ-hc Using A keyboard controller https://youtu.be/YJlI6U8Rqa0

You will greatly befit from taking time to either watch the tutorials or read parts of the user manual and learn more about the basics of using a DAW. The item you are asking about is universal to all DAW it sort of what we call common knowledge. We welcome all questions here if you get stuck but most people will try and teach themselves the basics and there’s lots of help on you tube and even just Google your questions. Have fun.

@Bill Crockett as @mettelus has just said. Did you contact Cakewalk support and get your account straightened out? Installing and activation of legacy products can be frustrating because there’s lots of steps to remember. The Command Center sort of does this for you. I had no problem installing Dim pro and Rapture. I’ve done this many times . I have a back up of the last CCC download folder from 2017 which also has the all the libraries already downloaded. All my old legacy products are in there.Even older versions. As well as a txt document with serial numbers. I just log in and install what I need from CCC which takes no time at all because everything is already downloaded. Dim pro is one of the few irreplaceable synths for me. I’m hoping it returns with Sonar because someday those old installers might die.

Congratulations you are the first of probably many people who will ask this question. Roland asked Cakewalk to remove TTS-1 from further versions of Cakewalk. So you are the first person to discover this. I will be releasing a video later today that will explain alternatives. This will only be apparent to new installs on a computer that had no prior versions installed. I’m going to test today using an older installer first. Then install the update. Many people will still have older versions as safety copies. I found a few in my old Download folder back ups . And most of us have the original Sonar so will not be affected. Only people who don’t have back ups who do a fresh install will be affected. But there’s alternatives which is what my video is about.

This is actually hilarious if you know what is actually happening right now. Very funny. Why do people keep saying Subscription? The developers know that’s a bad move and at no point have dared to mention the word. Please take the time to read the easily found posts by the developers so as not to perpetuate myths.

Cakewalk TTS Level keeps going back to 127 volume
John Vere replied to Frank DeFede's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
An example is a download file will turn up Ample P Bass to max2.0 I always use 1.0 . I have to turn down the midi volume to 64 using the track inspector. Turning it down in the GUI it just jumps back when you start playback. Not the audio track It will return to unity. But in Cakewalk the midi track inspector overrules any imbedded data. Some Instrument GUI settings only work when everything else is at None. -
For what it’s worth I just play the track best I can and then manually fix screwed up parts in PRV. I don’t think I’ve ever punched in on a midi track using the auto punch. Because I’m a one handed player I just play along and hit the R with my other hand. But take note that you might be suffering from latency and so you are not syncing up properly. It’s best to bypass all effects when doing any recording to avoid this.

New Installation on new computer MIDI problem
John Vere replied to wahlterh's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
I made a few tutorials on how to connect midi devices and set up you instrument tracks. https://youtu.be/YJlI6U8Rqa0?si=CMh1mcMQlnV1eB0l https://youtu.be/rVWeMsPZ-hc?si=OEwmjixRcx7y0Jh4 https://youtu.be/8xYGKsLHAh0?si=VVyUHGuWGRvoYbT8 https://youtu.be/T3ES7-l4WS0?si=vQNstfZLul_4lvaW -
I’m assuming you are doing this to add a effect at a certain point in a song? There’s a few approaches. One is create a sub bus with the compressor that you automate. Send all the busses there before going to the master. Second copy paste the automation lane from one track to the next. For this you have to use a compressor that can be automated. There is also midi Learn which most compressors have which I think can be set up to do this globally from your controller. Quick groups if available you might have to use a different compressor. Grab the Melda free bundle everyone should have it anyway. The included compressor is top notch and can be automated. And it’s worth it just to get the guitar tuner.

The default is 32 for rendering. I do all bouncing and export of stems at 32. Why not? Hard drives are huge and cheap.

When I researched 2x2 interfaces there was only 3 that use 32 bit floating point. The Art USB II, the Zoom UAC 232 and the Steinberg UR 22 C manufacturers if asked will claim there’s not much point in going above 24 and that the quality of the pre amp is more important. Example Steinberg pre amps don’t get rave reviews. So slapping a 32 bit A/D after a noisy isn’t going to help much. You can just make the noise louder! They do say that using 32 bit will avoid digital clipping better.

Good lord, any attempts at finding sf2 files takes you to the time machine and way back machine web pages. I think I'll pass, that's just way to much like work. The one @Glenn Stanton was all dead ends. Lots of interesting reading but no obvious downloadable GM midi sf2 files. I'm sort of careful about downloading files. Even though I'm doing this on a old laptop that is it gets screwed I'm fine. I doubt if my watchers are interested in ancient tech anyhow. I have found some very good alternatives that are super easy to download and install. Another weird one is I have Coyote with Band in a box. It directly will replace the TTS-1 in Cakewalk and sounds pretty good. But trying to find a simple download seems a rabbit hole of of scary places on the internet. If anyone has insight please share.

Spent all last night researching the topic and have most of a script for a video done. I followed all the leads mentioned above and downloaded 6 different options. Some work some don’t. So in the video I’ll play examples of what each sounds like including any hardware I have on hand. The deal is no user intervention. this is the file I’m using https://freemidi.org/download3-2804-sultans-of-swing-dire-straits It has systEx data. I had put my Sound Canvas on consignment at the local music store for $15 I’ll find out later if it’s still there . One common player people talk about and I got it with Band in the Box is Sforzanzo but I gave up on it as it seems you’re supposed to drag and drop the sf2 files which I don’t have. So is there a standard GM bank that people use? Thanks

I re download it. Sounds like the installer was corrupted.

Of course I agree. Reading a lot of post you will see lots of people that never progressed past the default. Many were even unaware that midi had other choices in Cakewalk. It’s the pre viewing midi files in 10 seconds we will ultimately be loosing. We will be loosing this long standing convenience. We will not be loosing an irreplaceable synth. Far from it. I can see that down the road when the time comes it will be a simple matter of associating midi files with Home Studio.

The video is getting more interesting by the minute! I can’t find my old file I guess it got lost in the transition from floppy disk to PC hard drives. But I found a downloaded version that seems the same. So hard cold fact is the TTS-1 still works as usual in the new update. I just updated Cakewalk and I opened the midi file no problem so we will have the TTS-1 until they pull the plug for good on CbB. My guess is this is still a longs way off. And it seems that even once CbB goes in to demo mode that it will remain installed and available to Sonar . And those of us with older Sonar will also have it until something breaks DXi. It was crashing Cakewalk sometimes anyhow so this is a good chance to move on as well.

Just another thought on this. I sort of think this might have not been planned by our developers and was not on the radar to add anything to replace that feature of default playback. It’s not possible without a 3 rd party plug in. This whole thing might be Roland pushing Software sales.

Here lies the problem. Because Cakewalk goes so far back it is almost unique in the DAW world and I’m pretty sure no other DAW can open and play a midi file in all its glory better than Cakewalk. When I get a chance I’ll try an experiment with a complicated midi file I bought back in the late 80’s. The Sultans of Swing. It heavily relies on system exclusive to play the guitar part. I originally had a Roland MT32 which was the beginning of GM but not there yet. It only had 8 channels. ? I replaced it with my Korg 05R/W which I still have. That was like night and day playing this same file. I remember being dissatisfied with Sound Blaster sound fonts. And GS wavetable synth was always bad. My Korg was better mostly I think because it’s effects were better. But when I started using Cakewalk in mid 90’s I found the TTS-1 was a lot less hassle than hardware so shelved the Korg. But I often dust it off for the none GM sounds that so far I haven’t found replacements for. But I’ll try playing this file through all the GM players I have and I’ll record it and possibly a fun little You Tube project which compared each player.
