I clip on the first beat of the first bar How to solve it
John Vere replied to Beraca Music's question in Q&A
I think this is it. It's been a feature request for a long time. Mostly it's people who use notation that complain. There's no way to have your measures properly counted out and a pick up in the intro. You can set the metronome to count in but I'm not sure if that solves the other issues with synths waking up and going... " Oh! you want me to make sound? Just hold on a sec and I'll be right with you." -
That's good to know as I was only using the PC76 for some reason as the other ones I guess I never really figured out the correct settings. Might give them another try someday.

Unable to Record MIDI Drums with Ekit
John Vere replied to John David Ross's topic in Instruments & Effects
This is it... it's always sort of having to second guess what might not be set up properly. ? Digital drums are a little tricky and in my case I cannot use a VST while tracking because there will be a tiny bit of delay which drives me nuts. So I have the drum modul connected to inputs 3/4 and use that while tracking. I leave input echo off. -
Unable to Record MIDI Drums with Ekit
John Vere replied to John David Ross's topic in Instruments & Effects
You realize that you won’t hear the drum module sounds unless you connect audio cables. The USB connection is for midi data normally. If it has a driver install it. Don’t depend on a generic driver if the manufacturer supplied proper drivers. A few of my tutorials contain details of connecting midi gear. #2 for sure you might want to watch -
I exclusively only use the Pro channel EQ. Compressors I use many different ones as each has a different sound and controls. My most used compressor is called Molotov by Tokyo Labs. It’s free. I used to use the pro channel PC76U type and more or less didn’t change the default settings.

I see a button on the front too that might toggle things The Monitor A/B button. And yes on the back you would assume the Main outs would be controlled by the front control that is marked as such. Is there a software mixer for this?

I clip on the first beat of the first bar How to solve it
John Vere replied to Beraca Music's question in Q&A
Way way back in 1984 when I first used an Atari and played midi tracks live we quickly learned to leave that 1 st measure space to avoid stuck notes and let all our hardware set up properly. So all my ancient midi files start on 2nd measure. Prg changes and stuff start on beat 2. Zero is never a good idea with midi and even audio for that matter. -
This was sort of what I was seeing when reading other DAW forums where people asked this question. Did you ever give any more thoughts to updating it? I'm personally happy with the way it works now. Just finishing a Tutorial about it and I most certainly learned a lot more about it in the process. I think it's a feature more people would use if they realized some of the options like transferring between projects and selecting what gets recalled. I didn;t know you could do that until ( that's right everyone) I read the complete documentation.

Errors updating Cakewalk with older Win 7 version
John Vere replied to Sven's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
And to add, it wouldn't have mattered anyway because Cakewalk stores all your settings and preferences in it's core folders so you would not have noticed any difference. It's always bee "smart". I've been running the latest versions of Cakewalk on a W7 Laptop for years now and I see no differences in how it works. I only use it for remote recording but otherwise W7/ Cakewalk still works fine. -
That explains why I didn't see it. For a long time I couldn't open the images in the documentation. That seems to have been resolved and now I see the images on all devices. This is a huge step forward for me as I often open the documentation. I do have the PDF version on hand but prefer the on line as I can use Google to find things a bit quicker.

How much fidelity do VST instruments really have?
John Vere replied to RexRed's topic in Instruments & Effects
People on this forum of who I trust their opinion all have stated that the 64 bit engine will do nothing for you and can possibly do harm. -
Track turns on instrument reverb
John Vere replied to David Pollock's topic in Instruments & Effects
Not sure My experience is the knob only seems to work with TTS1 But I’ve never tried it with East West. With TTS-1 the control seems to override the control inside of the TTS1 GUI. Just like bank and patch changes do. -
Track turns on instrument reverb
John Vere replied to David Pollock's topic in Instruments & Effects
Curious, If you open that tracks advanced midi settings strip in the track inspector what happens with the reverb control found there? -
Thanks @Tim Elmore for posting that signal flow chart. I've never seen that one before and it's defiantly the best and easiest to understand. @chuckebaby Here's some screenshots of the clip effects set up that scook mentioned. I've never used it myself as I use one of the many other options that will work the same. Like putting a Effects chain at the top of the pro channel strip. Just right click a clip or audio track. What I don't like abut this method is it becomes hidden and would be easy to forget it is there. So I personally would not recommend it unless its used on one clip that is part of a whole track where only that one clip needed processing. But I would then render in those cases using the Process Effects option. I'm not afraid of destructive editing.

Did you know that Pro Tools doesn't have Mix Recall! I Googled a bunch of different DAW's and ask about Mix Recall.
-
It's actually very simple. Top to bottom unless you change a Pre / Post setting. So the output of a track goes to the Gain control first. This is why it's important to have this adjusted so the rest of the pathway will receive a proper level. A lot of people ignor the gain control but it is one of the most important parts of adjusting levels and The Pro Channel is next and within the Pro Channel once again, top to bottom. What's cool about this is you could insert the Effects chain module and put it at the top. That give you an important option for none Pro Channel processing. Then the Effects Bin is next and once again top to bottom. Then the sends and Auxiliaries can be added to send to buses or Aux tracks. Then the Pan and last is the track fader. From there it goes to the top of the Bus it is assigned to and starts all over again top to bottom. That bus goes to the Master and starts all over top to bottom.

What is the model number of the Behringer? Some interfaces have more than one set of outputs like my Tascam. It has a monitor and then 1/2 and 3/4 outputs and I think only the monitor out is controlled by the level knob. You might be using the wrong outputs jacks if there’s more than one choice.

And this is probably the root of the problems! USB powered interfaces have a long history of issues. If the unit also has a power supply option you should use it and see if the problem goes away. Computer USB ports are all over the map as far as supplying a dependable source of power. 5 volts is marginal and there's so many other factors involved like USB 2 and USB 3 etc. My Motu will only run on a totally dedicated PCIe card USB 3.0 port. And even then it has way more weird issues than my Scarlett that uses a power supply. I often have to totally re boot my computer when it stops working. I will never buy another interface that doesn't have at least the option of using a power supply again.

Click Track goes silent after count in when recording...
John Vere replied to Rok TheKasbah's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
Somehow I knew my answer would not be well received. I was going to move on but thought I could help but I would need clarification on a few things first. The point is I try and help anyone who comes here and it’s often we have to guess what is wrong. Miss information is a huge problem when trying to troubleshoot something. Terminology might not matter to you but it makes a big difference to me and other who are regular “ helpers “ here. So the whole point of my break down was to get some clear information so we can help you. And ya, I could only assume by how you described your issue that you were either a part time or new user. Sorry if that offended it was not intentional. But once again I can only assume that a user who doesn’t know about basic stuff like that hasn’t used the software much so might not understand how a lot of things work too. Glad you got it sorted. -
Was just reading all the documents regarding mix recall. I was unaware that you can totally customize what it saves. Example in my case when working with multi song live recordings each song will have different track automation. So you can tell mix recall to not load that. I think this calls for deep research and a tutorial topic. Interesting what Noel said later in this thread I started exactly 2 years ago about possibly updating it.

Don’t feel bad. I didn’t know that tiny button was there until last year. You need a magnifying glass to see it!

How much fidelity do VST instruments really have?
John Vere replied to RexRed's topic in Instruments & Effects
I only just noticed it as I was editing and had it soloed . First thought was my Yamaha NSM10’s were starting to die. But it was worse in the headphones. Haven’t had a chance to figure it out and then I read this thread. -
Click Track goes silent after count in when recording...
John Vere replied to Rok TheKasbah's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
OK lets break down your question for some clarification; This implies you have a midi or audio track used for a click and not the metronome. The metronome doesn't need a track. So this is unclear. This implies you have enabled the count in feature of the metronome for record but have not enabled the play metronome during recording in the transport or the metronome settings dialogue. ( see @Lynn Wilson comment only Control panel I think he meant Transport module ) You said you are a long time user but this statement implies a very basic starting level with Cakewalk. And just to enlighten, its a Bus not a channel. This implies an incorrect routing as the metronome bus by default, along with tracks or sub buses, should all be routed to the Master bus by default. The Master Bus is then routed to your Audio interface. Your Soft synths are either routed to the Master or to a sub bus that is routed to the master. Check all your outputs, tracks and buses are correctly routed. -
Yes this is totally true. And the more knowledge you have of the software the easier this becomes. I can work 10 x faster in Cakewalk than I did only 4 years ago. Simply because I decided to try and learn how it works from the ground up instead of my original method of blindly pushing buttons and doing things the same way for 20 years. It does take time but it's time well spent. I even watch the first few videos I made and see things I have improved upon since I made them last fall. You never stop learning when it comes to software and music and video.
