Cakewalk Bundles: Can they Be Used With Other Programs?
John Vere replied to Annabelle's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
I have a tutorial on how to transfer projects to another DAW I realize that video is not the best format for you, but I think my narrative covers the whole topic -
Often when a feature is missing it is because of the Workspace setting. Change to the advanced workspace

Lots of Free wave editors are available. They all do MP3 conversations. Or why not up grade to the latest Cakewalk which is free? It has everything you want and more.

I just purchased the Sound Canvas VA soft synth...

Forum tip# 205: When a first time poster asks a question let one person reply. Even if the answer doesn’t help much watch and wait. If the poster then actually returns and seems engaged then toss in your 2 cents worth. There’s virtually 100’s of abandoned threads here some of them become 2 pages long. -
Dragging kik drum audio track to midi track problems

Yes that’s why I mentioned Ripple edit because if it is on crazy things like this will happen. -
Dragging kik drum audio track to midi track problems
John Vere replied to Green Needle's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
I'm wondering why this would be a problem. I have converted 100's of audio tracks to midi since way back when, even using Sonar Home Studio. It's a simple process. Create a new midi track or a simple instrument track. I always first move the tracks so they are next to each other to avoid glitches. Then I just highlight the audio track and drag and drop it onto the midi track. I've never had this not work. Sometimes the results were not usable if the audio in question wasn't something simple like a bass track of single drum track. I've even converted a lot of lead guitar solos into midi to use with a synth instead. -
You seems to have set some of your default pathways to specific project folders. This is not normally done. Example I set the first pathway for Project files to the Root of my E drive. I can then choose what I wish to open from there. Most people would only have one Cakewalk project folder but I work with clients as well as I have my own categories like Original songs and Backing tracks. The E drive is only for Cakewalk and Movie studio files. The default for exports at the bottom of the list was a placeholder that would automatically put the export folder inside the project folder. You have removed it and replaced it with a very specific pathway. What I did is set this pathway to a global folder I use called Exports. Inside that folder is different categories for what I'm working on. It is an extra step during export to choose the correct location but worth it for me as I like to be organized that way. And Cakewalk often remembers the location I chose the next time I export that project. They are still fine tuning the export dialogue.

Dragging kik drum audio track to midi track problems

It sounds like you are not selecting just the kick drum audio track. It seems you are selecting the whole project first or Ripple Edit is on? -
I clip on the first beat of the first bar How to solve it
John Vere replied to Beraca Music's question in Q&A
I think this is it. It's been a feature request for a long time. Mostly it's people who use notation that complain. There's no way to have your measures properly counted out and a pick up in the intro. You can set the metronome to count in but I'm not sure if that solves the other issues with synths waking up and going... " Oh! you want me to make sound? Just hold on a sec and I'll be right with you." -
That's good to know as I was only using the PC76 for some reason as the other ones I guess I never really figured out the correct settings. Might give them another try someday.

Unable to Record MIDI Drums with Ekit
John Vere replied to John David Ross's topic in Instruments & Effects
This is it... it's always sort of having to second guess what might not be set up properly. ? Digital drums are a little tricky and in my case I cannot use a VST while tracking because there will be a tiny bit of delay which drives me nuts. So I have the drum modul connected to inputs 3/4 and use that while tracking. I leave input echo off. -
Unable to Record MIDI Drums with Ekit
John Vere replied to John David Ross's topic in Instruments & Effects
You realize that you won’t hear the drum module sounds unless you connect audio cables. The USB connection is for midi data normally. If it has a driver install it. Don’t depend on a generic driver if the manufacturer supplied proper drivers. A few of my tutorials contain details of connecting midi gear. #2 for sure you might want to watch -
I exclusively only use the Pro channel EQ. Compressors I use many different ones as each has a different sound and controls. My most used compressor is called Molotov by Tokyo Labs. It’s free. I used to use the pro channel PC76U type and more or less didn’t change the default settings.

I see a button on the front too that might toggle things The Monitor A/B button. And yes on the back you would assume the Main outs would be controlled by the front control that is marked as such. Is there a software mixer for this?

I clip on the first beat of the first bar How to solve it
John Vere replied to Beraca Music's question in Q&A
Way way back in 1984 when I first used an Atari and played midi tracks live we quickly learned to leave that 1 st measure space to avoid stuck notes and let all our hardware set up properly. So all my ancient midi files start on 2nd measure. Prg changes and stuff start on beat 2. Zero is never a good idea with midi and even audio for that matter. -
This was sort of what I was seeing when reading other DAW forums where people asked this question. Did you ever give any more thoughts to updating it? I'm personally happy with the way it works now. Just finishing a Tutorial about it and I most certainly learned a lot more about it in the process. I think it's a feature more people would use if they realized some of the options like transferring between projects and selecting what gets recalled. I didn;t know you could do that until ( that's right everyone) I read the complete documentation.

Errors updating Cakewalk with older Win 7 version
John Vere replied to Sven's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
And to add, it wouldn't have mattered anyway because Cakewalk stores all your settings and preferences in it's core folders so you would not have noticed any difference. It's always bee "smart". I've been running the latest versions of Cakewalk on a W7 Laptop for years now and I see no differences in how it works. I only use it for remote recording but otherwise W7/ Cakewalk still works fine. -
That explains why I didn't see it. For a long time I couldn't open the images in the documentation. That seems to have been resolved and now I see the images on all devices. This is a huge step forward for me as I often open the documentation. I do have the PDF version on hand but prefer the on line as I can use Google to find things a bit quicker.

How much fidelity do VST instruments really have?
John Vere replied to RexRed's topic in Instruments & Effects
People on this forum of who I trust their opinion all have stated that the 64 bit engine will do nothing for you and can possibly do harm. -
Track turns on instrument reverb
John Vere replied to David Pollock's topic in Instruments & Effects
Not sure My experience is the knob only seems to work with TTS1 But I’ve never tried it with East West. With TTS-1 the control seems to override the control inside of the TTS1 GUI. Just like bank and patch changes do. -
Track turns on instrument reverb
John Vere replied to David Pollock's topic in Instruments & Effects
Curious, If you open that tracks advanced midi settings strip in the track inspector what happens with the reverb control found there? -
Thanks @Tim Elmore for posting that signal flow chart. I've never seen that one before and it's defiantly the best and easiest to understand. @chuckebaby Here's some screenshots of the clip effects set up that scook mentioned. I've never used it myself as I use one of the many other options that will work the same. Like putting a Effects chain at the top of the pro channel strip. Just right click a clip or audio track. What I don't like abut this method is it becomes hidden and would be easy to forget it is there. So I personally would not recommend it unless its used on one clip that is part of a whole track where only that one clip needed processing. But I would then render in those cases using the Process Effects option. I'm not afraid of destructive editing.

Did you know that Pro Tools doesn't have Mix Recall! I Googled a bunch of different DAW's and ask about Mix Recall.

It's actually very simple. Top to bottom unless you change a Pre / Post setting. So the output of a track goes to the Gain control first. This is why it's important to have this adjusted so the rest of the pathway will receive a proper level. A lot of people ignor the gain control but it is one of the most important parts of adjusting levels and The Pro Channel is next and within the Pro Channel once again, top to bottom. What's cool about this is you could insert the Effects chain module and put it at the top. That give you an important option for none Pro Channel processing. Then the Effects Bin is next and once again top to bottom. Then the sends and Auxiliaries can be added to send to buses or Aux tracks. Then the Pan and last is the track fader. From there it goes to the top of the Bus it is assigned to and starts all over again top to bottom. That bus goes to the Master and starts all over top to bottom.
