I love the harmonised lead and this kind of heavy sustain - I'm a Steve Hackett fan so this is right in my wheelhouse and is a great close to a fine body of work.

yes, heavy sustain. the mesa boogie mark IIb head, pushed with a Barber Direct Drive Super Sport was the chain for the solo tones.

 

steve hackett is a great player, i've always loved his early stuff, and used to have his Voyage of the Acolyte on vinyl.

interested player for sure!

yea, i like joe quite a bit, but would never claim him as an influence, i was already playing quite a long time before he even hit the scene.

i like his self entitled album 'joe satriani' probably the best of his whole catalog, with 'crystal planet' being my 2nd favorite.

 

i cannot hear any yes in any of this composition, but it's cool that it has that effect on you, pulling something out of the grey membranes that hits that memory just so.

 

 

and to be clear, i wrote this song about 6-7 years before Holdsworth died, so it was never intended to be a tribute in the 'classic' sense, it was really just about admiring his staying power against the onslaught of mediocrity that threatened his very artistry.

he stuck to his guns.

he had resolve.

i try to make the mix as clear as possible.

and when mastering, there is a point, where i'm pushing the compression, saturation, and limiting where it sounds 'dense' but not flattened and too thick, and that's the sound i'm going for.

 

but mastering as hot as i am now, i still push well past the best 'dynamics' levels, which i find to be about -14lufs, 

and i'm pushing to about -10 lufs.

 

so, maybe i could get it even cleaner, but it is a compromise between modern levels and pure aesthetics.

Andrew Scheps says to ignore the -14LUFs recommendation and trust your ears.  I'm with him - for a long time I used -14 as a goal, but I think maybe it is not the best thing to do now.

yea, i've read the scheps interview somewhere,

and yes, if you look at every PRO release in the last year,

the numbers are typically half the dynamic range of -14!!

LOL

i'm typically getting about -10lufs max, with my limited skills, that's as far as i can take it without the compression and limiting messing with the balances.

i listen to pro mixes at 6 and 7 DR, and it hurts my ears after one song.
