Cakewalk Next? Seems like we are locked out of Discord???

Recommended Posts

I have now clue where to post this so will try this in hopes that a developer will respond.
I had made a few videos about using Next back in November and was politely asked to remove them as per the agreement that I actually never saw as part of accessing the beta version. So I did.

I am trying to re post these videos in support of it's release as early access.  Watching the videos I  realized I got to a point in demonstrating audio editing where you cannot use the punch in recording. It is like way out of sync. I reported this back in November on Discord as I was told to do.

I now return to the point where I left off 4 months ago and I find punch in recording is still broken??

The built in report dialogue does not allow attaching videos or pictures ???

OK, fine, I tried to log on to discord and there seems to be absolutely no trace of a Server for any keywords that use the terms Cakewalk or Next, etc. It's like it doesn't exist anymore.

I need to hear officially from someone why this feature is not working or will be forced to put out the video demonstrating how it is still broken after 4 months. I don't want to do that as I think a lot of good work went into this software and I prefer to be 100% supportive.  Please advise.

I saw your post about this previously. I hadn't really done much of anything with Next but thought I'd give this a try. I hadn't even set up my ASIO interface with it. It took a couple minutes to figure that out, and just a few more to open a default 4-track audio template, record 8 bars, and then punch in a couple in the middle. It took me a minute to figure out that looping had been enabled by default when I set up the punch, but after I got that turned off, I was able to get a pretty decent punch right away; the timing seemed fine. FWIW I was recording from my digital piano under Local control, input monitoring through Next.

The only weirdness I encountered that didn't seem due to user error is that the metronome showed 120bpm, but was clearly running much slower than that initially, like 90bpm even after several restarts. I cranked it up to 150, and it was running about as fast as I would have expected for that so I set it back to 120 and it was right on what I expected in the first place.

EDIT: I'm not a regular Discord user, but had visited the Next server previously and posted a couple of times. A link for it came right up when I logged in, and there are recent posts.

@David Baay

Thanks David. This was not midi punch in its audio.
I opened the user guide to make sure I was following instructions. I followed it  to the letter.

I activated punch in and it clearly shows the highlighted part just like Cakewalk.

I pre roll 2 measures back and hit record and it punches in correctly but it places the audio I was playing  earlier in the place the new material should be Trust me I tried probably 20 times I tried different projects I tried an empty project I even used a different audio interface and a different computer. I tried in November I tried in December, January and just today again. the results are always the same. The wrong material gets placed in the wrong spot. There’s no effect or VST instruments.
If I can’t get this to work then who else’s could!!
I have used punch in record in possibly 5 different DAWS. If I’m doing something wrong it still needs to be fixed so it’s more idiot proof.

Yes, I recorded audio from my digital piano being played in real time via Local control. No MIDI involved... but also no microphones. Line in.

John, I sent you an invite to the Cakewalk Next Discord server.

Thanks. But where?
And still. Why doesn’t Next server show in the search? I haven’t logged in for about a month. It sent me a log in security access code? That was new.

🤣 Sorry, but that had me seriously laughing out loud. I dunno, John. It worked for me. Sounds like it's having some issue with your audio clock, but if the same happened with a different interface... I dunno.

Are you saying it places what you were playing during the pre-roll in the punch region?

I realize playing along during the pre-roll is SOP to get a smooth transition, but I didn't actually do that; I started playing at the punch in. I'll try it your way.

Yes it is definitely not what is played during the punch.

Back in November when I first noticed it I inserted a second empty track and put it in record and you could clearly see the timing issue

Tomorrow I will screen capture it.

I figure if it really is a bug there had to be a lot of people noticing it.

Okaaay... that was interesting. I went back to my DAW and Next was nowhere to be seen, shut down, crashed, outta here, abducted by aliens. I re-launched it and none of my audio setup was recalled. It was back on WASAPI and I had to reset everything. I then closed it deliberately in hopes it will store the setup for next time. I then re-recorded, (including getting the distinctly slow metronome until I changed it), and I'm able to repro your issue. If I pre-roll from the start with a 1-measure count-in, my two-measure punch-in at bar 5 ends up being the silent count-in and the first bar I played.

I'll see what I can do to get the message to the Bakers.

Yes thanks I thought I PMd you back but it was late at night and I was out of town all day yesterday.
Anyhow I got in to Discord but weirdly it is under Cactus and not John. But once I sort this out I’ll post it in the Bug bin

Thanks, I’m not crazy. It is a huge flaw that I guess hasn’t been

noticed because I guess the majority of Next testing is all Creating and not playing guitar.

But I definitely posted it on Discord back in December I think.

I’ll screen capture it later today.

I think they made a huge mistake indiscriminately making the Beta testing 100% public. I would have been more than happy to test it more if they used a smaller group and we communicated in in a private forum. I just couldn’t follow using Discord. It’s like trying to help people on Facebook. The signal to noise ratio is unbearable.
So I abandoned it a few months ago and have only been using the Stem separation tool.

Well I made this video. I once again logged on to Discord and there is no way to get at the Next server or what ever it's called.

I got an invite from @orcmid  and yesterday that got me signed in on my phone under Cactus.  I never chose that name but I think it came from a log in from my Laptop which I'm logged into Bandlab with. But I did all my posting under John Vere. So I log in with that and I found a PM from them again. Note the name is Cakewalk Next.

Screenshot(462).png.72591cf1fb37733b4b3f67281e6ead41.png

But when I click on the link I got this.

Screenshot(460).png.7da33b690ff737d5e2861d0196198de3.png

So I tried a direct search and I get this

SO you can see why it's pretty frustrating to attempt to help these people out. It will be a huge hassle to post the video from my phone. So I'm posting it here as a private video. the link will expire in 2 days. https://youtu.be/jiPKEcR1EKk

This is all the time I have for this.

I wouldn't call it a 100% public beta test when you had to artificially inflate the figures of a Discord server in order to have access to it.

The reason I say that is when I first signed up I was reading the posts and a lot of them were obviously from people who had no clue about DAWS. Questions like what is this thing? How do you make beats? I don’t understand what this does?  And so on. So it seems to me they were just giving anyone access.

Are you referring to the 21,000 members that show as being part of the Next beta testing?

then within 10 minutes of using the program I ran into issues not covered in the very sparse users manual. I found 4 bugs that day but found out you could only post 1 bug report every Hour??
I never got any response from them until I posted something here and I guess that got someone’s attention!
That’s when I was told to not post the tutorials I was working on. As far as I can tell they didn’t fix my reported bugs.

They were but you had to enter their Discord server in order to gain access to the beta software, which is why I don't consider it a "public beta." A public beta would imply anyone can download and test the software with no strings attached.

That's strange and in no way helpful as the purpose of a beta is for bugs to be reported and fixed. I did do a quick YouTube search and there are at least three Next tutorials there. Considering the bugs you found as you were doing your videos, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't allow you to post them because of the bugs they didn't fix and that would be apparent in the videos.

This whole Sonar/Next series of events is proving to be quite disappointing to say the least.

I didn't run into the bugs until I got to my 4th video on Audio editing. I'm actually still stuck there because of that. I can't make a video that includes demonstrating something that is broken.   And I was being very supportive and positive because they put a lot of work into creating this software and I'm sure it will just take time to be fully baked.   You can go watch my videos here in the tutorial sub forum. I re posted a few days ago now that we are in the clear.
