Hello All, I work full time and usually after work I used to go to my home studio and dabble in mixing. The longer I did it, the better i became and started purchasing more equipment to go along with the studio. I would then start-recording friends and relatives for free as I have keyboard workstation, Midi Keyboards, Acoustic and Electric guitars and basses in my studio. I then wondered about charging folks as I was using my time and electricity on helping them over the years and how I could benefit. Now, I am no where near an Andrew Scheps, however, I have taken engineering classes at the University of the ARTS in Philadelphia, PA and have done an internship at Philly International Records, a few decades back, LOL (That Major Studio has been closed for several years now). ? This video helped me in determining that I needed to begin charging for my services.

I need Help looking for a particular audio cable
jesse g replied to jesse g's topic in The Coffee House
Hey All, The Coaxial Cables I ordered from Amazon arrived today and the connection to the Lexicon SPDIF port and the Otca-Capture worked flawlessly. There is an option on the Octacapta that has to be turned on first. Press the Display button on the Octa-Capture. Turn the dial until DIGITAL is selected on the screen. Set DIGITAL to AUTO Done. I also set the Lexicon MX200 though the analogue patch bay so I could route it's sound out to other things. Thanks everyone for the discussion and helping me with this.? -
I need Help looking for a particular audio cable
jesse g replied to jesse g's topic in The Coffee House
Hello Tom, So I was routing all of my gear through a new Patch Bay and I got to the Octa-Captures 9/10 I/O port. I usually don't use it but i wanted to add it to my Patch bay if I could connect it to my Lexicon MX200 reverb unit, which has 2 coaxial ports on the back. I was just trying to find a way to use the Coaxial and SPDIF ports with my patch bay connected via analogue adapters. I tried using RCA cables, but I kept getting this pulsing sound but no audio coming through. I previously used the 3\4 analogue outs on my Octa-Capture, but they were now being used by another piece of hardware, and I didn't want the 9/10 SPDIF outs to go unused. I just ordered 2 Coaxial cables and they will work along side SPDIF for the connection. -

Sheens, Thanks for your response. Sorry, I forgot to mention that I was trying to route the Lexicon and 9/10 ins and outs of the Octa-Capture through my patch-bay, I was trying to make use of the Octa-Capture 9/10 in and outs. I have used the 3/4 I/O's for my Octa-Capture in the past for my Lexicon MX200, but I am starting to use more hardware in my studio and have moved items around in my rack. Now the only 2 spots I have left is 9/10 on the Octa- Capture and I am trying to find a way to make them work for me. I only use the Lexicon to add reverb to the vocalist Cue Mix so they can hear reverb in their headphones while singing, the reverb never gets recorded. I guess I will skip the patch bay and just route 2 audio coaxial cables from the Octa Captures 9/10 's I/O to the SPDIF I/O of the Lexicon MX200. I will add this as one of my new External Inserts in Cakewalk by Bandlab. for my Cue Mix Bus. Thanks for your help ?? -
Hey all, I have a Roland Octa-Capture I/O as seen below, and I have never had the need to use I/O (9/10) before. These are coaxial stereo ins and outs on the device and I want to use them to route to a hardware Lexicon MX200. My problem is that I need a stereo audio coaxial cable to a 1/4 in male TRS, but I can't seem to find one anywhere? Has anyone seen or heard of one of these? Everything seems to be a dual mono coaxial to a to single 1/4 inch TS or TRS. Can anyone steer me in the right direction, or post links to where I can purchase the cable over the Internet.

Lance, I didn't hear anything about Cakewalk by Bandlab in your question, so how can we help you with your Cakewalk DAW and the Maschine MK2 MIDI Clock sync configuration? CakewalkbyBandlab Reference Guide -
Lemar, You got it just right, the sound and feel of Kraft Werk along side of Soul Sonic Force. I wanted to lay down my cardboard spread, break out the shell top Adidas and the Puma Sweat suit with the Kangol hat. ?

Yea. This is not gear, this is a plug in and it would get much more exposure over there than in the hardware gear section of the forum. Thanks for letting us know about it though. I'll be over in the deals section soon.

Audio Interface and Midi Controller for Cakewalk by BandLab

Hey XBaker, It's a cute little control surface. Currently I am using the Mackie Control Surface (MCU). I am hoping some time during this year to switch to the Icon Qcon Pro G2. This control surface is smooth and the faders aren't as noisy as the MCU's, which aren't really that noisy at all if you really think about it. It's nice to have all of these controls at your finger tips.

Audient has a new Audio I/O with 24×24 EVO 16 audio interface EVO wanted to come up with a super-sized incarnation of its easy-to-use recording gear concept. Up till now, it was exemplified by the simple and portable, but also capable EVO 4 and EVO 8 audio interfaces. The EVO 16 doubles the latter, but the size increase is manageable. The unit fits both desktops and racks (rack ears sold separately) and its chassis is made of solid steel chassis with non-slip rubber feet. That’s just respectable. The EVO 16 also breaks out the hi-res, full color screen which I still associate with pricier units. It seems decent screens are finally starting to trickle down more affordable models. The screen is being put to use by EVO’s all-new Motion UI control system. It uses to intelligently display information about your session ‘as and when you need it’. Apparently, the experience is comparable to using a Smart device. You know, the sort that kind of knows what you’re going for most of the time and tries to deliver that on tap, with little menu diving required. With Audient parenting EVO, there’s plenty of that brains and technology going the EVO 16. However, it stays affordably priced and novice-friendly. An uncomplicated interface with lots of room to plug stuff into that’s non-expensive is definitely something I can get behind. Is there anything in the unit itself stopping one from making the next chart-topper? I seriously doubt it. Read the specs. EVO 16 Key Features 8 x EVO Mic Preamps with Smart gain 2 x JFET Instrument Inputs 2 x Independent Headphone Outputs 8 x Line Outputs 2 x Optical Inputs 2 x Optical Outputs Multi-Channel Smart gain ‘EVO Motion UI’ Control System High-Res LCD Screen One Knob Centralized Control Ultra Clear Metering Input/Output Control Channel Status Indication Programmable Function Button Ultra-Low Latency Software Mixer Monitor Control Audio Loop-back Word Clock Output USB 2.0 Type-C Connection 24bit / 96kHz conversion Price and availability data The EVO 16 is expected to ship sometime in June and retail for EUR 469 (VAT included). Go to time line @3:09 to see the ART PRO VLA II and hear what Dave says about the compressor.

Alan, Information from the ART website (Keep in mind that the tubes in this Compressor doesn't have much to do with the sound coming out of the compressor, so changing them wouldn't make much of a noticeable change, however, others may differ) ? Overview The ProVLA II is a tube driven Vactrol®-based Compressor / Leveling amplifier designed to excel in any professional audio environment. Superior performance and an incredible tone makes the ProVLA II and indispensable tool for tracking, mixing, mastering, dynamic control of live sound sources or for use in broadcast audio. Capable of delivering a far more musical natural sounding and sonically transparent compression than competitive units in its class, the ProVLA II uses an Opto-electronic circuit rather than the more typical design VCA driven level detection circuit. This VCA-less design coupled with a 12AT7 vacuum tube in the gain stage makes the Pro-VLA II the ideal dynamic control device for critical audio applications. Exceptional signal integrity with extremely low noise and low distortion is achieved in the ProVLA II by utilizing a transformerless design throughout. Vactrol® Technology Unlike typical compression units that use Voltage Controlled Amplifiers (VCA’s) to handle level detection, the Pro VLA II’s Opto-electronic design allows a far more transparent and musical sounding compression without sounding aggressive or un-natural. This Vactrol based optical electronic circuitry is the basic component of the classic highly sought after compressors of past. Vactrol® design allows the ProVLA II to react to audio signal in much the same way the eye naturally adjusts to fluctuations in light levels – smoothly, quietly and almost imperceptibly. Soft Knee Leveling The ProVLA II is a soft knee leveling amplifier by design. Although capable of providing dramatic compression effects, the ProVLA II was designed to excel in any application where transparent, expressively musical dynamics control is desired. Comprehensive Metering Large highly visible backlit analog VU meters accurately display input and output levels while extremely fast 10-segment LED’s display gain reduction. For added functionality, the LED’s display either average level for mastering & mixing applications or peak hold for monitoring individual sources when tracking audio. Versatile I/O XLR and 1/4-inch TRS balanced inputs and outputs are provided to ensure the ProVLA II can connect with any audio source or hardware. A +4dBu/-10dBu mode switch optimizes ProVLA II I/O for either consumer or professional equipment. Key Features VCA-Less Vactrol Opto-Compression Design Mastering Quality Audio Signal Path with Tube Gain Stage Enhanced Link Mode – While in stereo link mode, channel 1 level control acts as a master output level and channel 2 becomes a balance control between them, – optimizing the Pro-VLA II for use as a mastering tool Variable Threshold, Ratio & Output Controls LED Backlit VU Input/Output Level Metering LED Metering Indicates Both Average Level And Peak Hold Accurate Ten Segment LED Gain Reduction Metering +4dBu/-10dBu Mode Switch Optimizes Pro-VLA II For Interface with Professional OR Consumer Grade Components Active Balanced XLR And 1/4-Inch Inputs & Outputs Toroidal Transformer Reduces Mechanical & Electrical Hum Specifications Equivalent Input Noise@+4dBu: -99dBu (”A” weighted) / @-10 dBV: -107dBu (”A” weighted) Maximum Attenuation30dB Input Impedance10K Ω Maximum Input Level+20dBu (in +4dBu mode) / +10dBV (in -10dBV mode) Maximum Output Level+20dB max Frequency Response10Hz to 100KHz (+/- 0.5dB) Dynamic Range> 100dB (20-20KHz) Attack Time0.25msec. to 50msec. variable Release TimeVariable 150ms to 3s SlopeVariable 2:1 to 20:1 Total Harmonic Distortion<0.1% (typical) Dimensions3.5″ x 19″ x 9.2″ (8.9cm x 48.3cm x 23.3cm) Weight10.5lbs (4.76kg)

Here is a video that I came across showing how easy it is to use outboard gear in Cakewalk . There aren't a lot of videos demonstrating this, so I thought I'd show what I found. Enjoy.

I wanted an additional compressor in my hardware rack but I didn't want to break the bank on it. I started watching YouTube videos to see what folks were purchasing that worked well but didn't cost a lot and offered dual ins and outs. I came across the ART PRO VLA II Compressor and started to investigate further. This is not a bad compressor to use mainly on vocals, but it can be used on other things as well. I know this Compressor has been out for a while, but I never considered it before with all of the big name compressors floating around. Nice Job ART!
