A dropout has stopped the audio engine
John Vere replied to Harley Dear's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
He doesn’t know if his is disabled because there seems to be no access to that menu item. You are looking at the example of what the performance settings should look like he posted. The page on left is his settings -
A dropout has stopped the audio engine
John Vere replied to Harley Dear's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
Windows Laptops can be a real issue with audio systems. Some are just unusable because the bios screws important settings up. My son bought a very powerful Dell laptop for live audio Deejay and Latency monitor declared it unusable. He tried to return it but Dell said it wasn’t broken. It was stuff like your experiencing too. He went and bought a cheap Acer that he’s never had an issue with since. Gave the Dell to his daughter -
Thanks I’ll see if it does this on a different project. It might just be the one project dong this. but other than muting buses and minor fader changes the only major change was I inserted True Pianos as a simple instrument track. Dragged the midi data to it and deleted AD Piano which was a split instrument track. Possibly if I had just replaced AD piano as a split track it might have been ok. I’ll try that too. I seem to remember Mix Recall works best when nothing changes other than mixing and effect settings. Not sure if you can even swap out effects?

One VST should never be an issue you should definitely see what is going on with the laptop. Turn off wi fi etc. I had one laptop that I had to disable the battery monitor in device manager but that was Windows XP. I have 4 old Laptops kicking around and I still use 3 of them at gigs. A little Asus netbook 1.8 hz 1 core 4 GB RAM been using it for over 14 years. Sony 2.5 hz duo core 4GB RAM about the same vintage those run W7. Both have SSD drives which makes a huge difference. No internet. Im just working on using the 3rd one which is newer(2014) Acer that sports 2 SSD drives and 8 GB RAM but the keyboard is dead. Not a problem as I use a USB foot switch to control. We have a few gigs over the summer so just preparing all my backing tracks. I’m doing a test run of a system that will simplify my need these days for lyrics. In the past the Asus played tracks and Sony laptop ran Power Point. So between songs I had to advance both playlist and lyrics on 2 laptops. Solution- Use Vegas Movie Studio to create Karaoke style cheat sheets. It was easier than I thought. Just plunk the stereo track on the timeline and add text by copy paste from my Notepad sheets. I’m even adding count in clues and chords. I highlight the text blue to remind me to turn on my Voice Live pedal. Lots of great tools to help an aging performer stay on cue. Best thing is these Movies playback in Win Amp which I’ve always used because it is one of the few playback apps that can stop at end of songs and is easily foot switch controlled. I can mix wave files and the movies on same playlist so I don’t need to make these movies for every song. Just the brain fart ones. Haven’t tried it yet using Cakewalks video display but certainly a potential there. As far as needing different mixes I simply export from Cakewalk those as required. I have Export folders called Full Mix ( give to band to learn songs) Full no vox or guitar ( when I’m alone) No Bass ( When I have a bass player) You get the idea. -

I use backing tracks. Best to keep them simple and get rid of any unessassary processing. In other words-- commit the tracks-- don't leave them loaded with processors etc. I would freeze all the synths. Even a very underpowered laptop can play lots of audio tracks ( like my 2008 Sony) . But effects processing and a lot of soft synths are CPU hogs. I can play 10 tracks of audio at a 256 buffer setting on that old POS Sony no problem, but I don't have any processing on those tracks as they are all frozen. Actually I export them as Stems and then create new projects that are 100% audio to use with the playlist. -
Never had this happen before. Not that I use Mix recall a lot but I'm making backing tracks from my finished originals and so I save mixes that have the Guitars and Vocal buses muted as well as I turn up the Drums and keys a little bit. I think the issue was because on one project I noticed Addictive Keys was off center so I swapped it for True Piano's which is centered properly. I saved the mix exported it and when I tried to return to the Original Master Mix I had saved as Mix 1 it crashed. So is this expected? In other words Mix recall hates any changes to tracks? Like instruments or different effects???

It’s important to state which version you are using when reporting issues like this. Did you just do the update?

Cakewalk needs at least your on board audio enabled ( Realtek ) or it cant run. Tutorial #1 has step by step instructions for using both an Audio interface and On Board Sound card.

Yes the USB foot switch is not midi but depends on the app you’re using they are totally programable for any keystrokes and some even can do sequence of actions including mouse clicks. The OP asked about them and why I answered as I find them very versatile. So even if it doesn’t work out for control of a guitar sim they are a handy gadget to own. I was figuring there’s the virtual keyboard which might work as a go between somehow

You want real cheap there are lots of different programable USB footswictches availlable. I've got a bunch of different brands and styles I use for all sorts of tasks. The one in the picture here used to be around $20 I guess China has raised prices. The best quality is the Stealth https://stealthswitch3.com/ But all can be programed to assign any keystroke to the buttons. Example I have the one shown bellow programed "R" "W" and "Space" for Cakewalk

Midi Device error with a (1) appended???
John Vere replied to newdreamstudio's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
You can easily show hidden midi devices in the device manager. If the device shows a few times it's because you have changed ports a few times. Windows will install a new driver evertime you change midi ports. I go into details in Tutorial 2. https://youtu.be/AcDcCmjPaWg -
set compound meter to relect simple meter click
John Vere replied to willard cottrell's question in Q&A
Try the metronome settings or what I would do is draw it in the step sequencer and drag it out for the whole song -
I wonder how many people today realize where the term Piano Roll came from? A visit to the music instrument museum in north Scottsdale AZ and see all the various different types of automation using air compressors. Whole brass bands all scored on metal disks with holes punched in them.

Melodyne appears to be creating region but doesn't
John Vere replied to Sven's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
I have spent days working with Melodyne over the last few weeks and I’m all up to date using the early release Cakewalk and the last updated Melodyne which for me was over a month ago. It works smoothly and I never have issues at all. First - yes, when you first apply the regional effect and the editor opens, it is blank. I found all I need to do is click in the middle of the clip I’m editing in track view and the editor will now show the blobs. From then on as I render and then re apply to the next clip it opens correctly. I have video about how I use Melodyne. I believe there’s a link to them in my signature -
recording drums with behringer umc 1820 interface
John Vere replied to Stefan De Cnodder's question in Q&A
It will be a mid range level interface so most likely gets same performance as most of that price range. Only the high end interfaces like RME get the real low readings. But more importantly ! even if a low reading is available is can you use it? My Motu M4 needs to run at 256 or higher on the same system where my Scarlett runs at 128. The quality of the drivers varies. Motu is a Mac focused product. The windows driver is not very good. Watch video #103. -
Take Lanes: "Last Take Priority" [NOT SOLVED; ON HOLD FOR NOW]
John Vere replied to user905133's question in Q&A
Well if it’s user error don’t feel bad. I sort have given up on using take lanes for guitar tracks. Seems every time I tried to use them I’d get all messed up and even loose good takes somehow? What I do is insert 3 identical audio tracks and just use those just like others would use the lanes. I then kept the first track and drag the better parts from the other two using simple cut and drag. When done I delete the other 2 tracks and everything is perfect and nice and tidy. Midi I just wank away in overwrite mode. I like the challenge of playing the part like I’m an actual keyboard player which I am definitely not. But I come as close as I can to creating an “OK” track and then spend some relaxing quality time in PVR. It one of my favourite pastimes in Cakewalk. -
Take a screenshot or write down the name of each of the missing files. Open the drive you might have used and use the search in the upper right corner. Often when this happens it’s from the old days when you needed to choose per project folders. The default was to use the global audio folder so dozens of songs would be all moshed together. My guess is if you still have the drive from that time period that’s where the audio is. Good luck and happy hunting!
-
I guess not many people would use it so it’s a low priority and scooks tool is all that is needed really. Movie Studio comes with Sound Forge included and it’s built in. It always crashes on me when I tried to use it from within Movie Studio . But it was easy to change the default as it simply lets you browse for the execution file and select it. I have a few softwares that work that way. I have Cakewalk set to open in Wave Lab but I haven’t used it that way in years. I find it can screw up and that’s a waste of time. I just open Wave Lab and browse to the Cakewalk audio folder and open and edit it from there. Way more stable this way. And it’s rare I would need to even do this as I have developed better workflows for Cakewalk.

This sounds like correct behaviour to me. The mute will mute any data in the track from playing. Think of it as working the way the faders do. That’s really what it is A quick way to turn a track off with out having to use a fader. Input echo will allow the incoming data to pass through or not. incoming data is not controlled by channel faders.
-
What I see is you have the track inspector channel dialogue set to none. I'm not sure what setting a channel in the avanced midi settings does because you can select more than one channel there. But definatly the track inspector sets the channel for the midi events which will be reflected in the event list and when your save the midi file to share.
-
You set the channel in the track inspector channel box Watch #12 and #13

Trying to export metronome, Aux track won't export
John Vere replied to nkeelaghan's question in Q&A
I myself have never really used the metronome much. I always start with a basic drum pattern which I have a collection I copied from my Roland 505 drum machine 20 years ago. I imagine the people who want this feature the most are using Cakewalk for live performance and need a click track for the drummer. Or it’s going to a studio somewhere that doesn’t use Cakewalk. But that seem pointless because all DAWs have metronomes.
