Digital nostalgia time. I happened upon this review of what was then called T RackS 24. I guess T RackS began life as a 4 module mastering processor about 25 years ago? I didn't know that, and I didn't know that the product had been around that long. According to my research, it was preceded by SampleTank by a few years. Another surprise for me. The music software market has surely changed since then, hasn't it? Imagine paying $300 for 4 T-RackS modules. Taking a close look at the image of the UI in the review reveals striking similarities between the parametric EQ module and what lives on in T-Racks 6 as Classic EQ. Distinctive display with rounded ends, 6 black knobs just below it, frequency knobs just below those. Output level knob off to the right. I guess it's been "not broke" for a quarter of a century, requiring no fixing. The Tube Compressor is even closer to the current Classic Compressor that comes with T Racks 6 Intro. I'm not as familiar with Classic Multiband Limiter, but its current incarnation also looks pretty close to the version in this product. It also looks as if the block italic "T-RackS" logo hung around through T-RackS 5 and was only dropped for T-RackS 6. Wouldn't mind seeing that swoopy graphic with the purple oval and black tyrannosaurus rex make some kind of appearance, although it is definitely the most dated looking thing about that turn-of-the-century UI. Gotta hand it to the designer of those UI's. For something to stay so similar in 25 years in the software industry, and not look dated (to my eyes at least) it speaks to how right they got it the first time out. They even used a similar aesthetic for the much later One all-in-one mastering tool and it looks great. List price is still the same, but of course regularly deeply discounted (even without glitches) and you get 15X the number of processors that the original product came with.

FWIW, a way to set up a faux zero measure, handy if you use charts with numbered measures. 1. Change the meter at Cakewalk measure 1 to double the number of beats per bar (e.g. replace 4/4 with 8/4) 2. Change the meter at Cakewalk measure 2 back to 4/4. 3. Put in a marker at Cakewalk measure 1 and label it "ZERO" (I like this because it catches my attention as a reminder). 4. On the fifth beat of the first (8-beat) measure put in a marker and label it "1." That is now my new Measure 1.

Not at all practical. The niche market would be so minute... there'd be no profit in the man-hours to create/produce/maintain it. Same goes for Linux based DAWs. That OS would have to support 3rd-party plugins... or you'd be taking a 30-year step backward in time. One benefit of Windows is the massive economy of scale. Remember back in the early days of PCs... where an IBM machine was literally $10k. Adjusted for today's economy, the cost would be almost $29k. If you want the equivalent of a dedicated hardware recorder, Tascam makes a 24-track recording box. It's a completely "closed" system. FWIW, The machines I'm running are in no way unstable, unpredictable, or poor-performers. One can build a fast, robust Windows PC DAW. That has been my career for the past 30+ years.

If you have an Apollo this is a great plugin. I track electric guitars through it with the Unison preamps and it's amazing. I then put it on the guitar track in my DAW. Tracking and mixing through the same console. It ain't subtle. If you need a scalpel this is a spoon. It's a bucket of paint and that's why I love it. This is a top 5 UAD plugin for me.

On the other hand, you won't have an update cause the plugin to not be found in project and losing its settings in the process. Can't tell you how many times I've had that happen. A significant number of the plugins in any of our collections are past EOL but we don't know it as it is often never announced. If the economy goes south at some point that number may jump up significantly as many developers go under. I am trying (note italics) to get in the habit of always bouncing any tracks involving plugins before closing/saving a project. That way if the next time I reopen a project and a plugin fails to load I have the option to fall back and use the bounced track as either a reference or a replacement.

Setting aside the issue of whether the Cakewalk dev team would be able to write an OS in their spare time, I have no interest in using a DAW that required me to boot a proprietary single-purpose OS in order to use it. Less than no interest; I would be repelled by such a product and consider it inadequate for my needs. I use Windows to run my apps. What I want is software that runs well in Windows. I often have multiple programs running at the same time along with my DAW. I also have no complaints about stability issues with the DAW's I use now. As a matter of fact, I'm pleasantly surprised that they are as stable as they are, given the tasks they do.

If you do watch a lot of YouTube reviews on interfaces each presenter will contradict what the last presentation said. Many will say Focusrite is a low value because it lacks a lot of features others have. My advice is to make a list of possible features and pick the interfaces that have the features that are of importance to you. Example- Direct monitoring levels on the front. A blend control for this. Midi ports, Combi jacks a large volume knob for my monitoring. If you record with other people then having extra headphones is a nice feature . Do you like reverb when recording? Then built in DSP is cool. Even though I don’t shop there I go on the Sweetwater web site and use the filter set to 4x4 USB interfaces priced low to high. They pretty much have them all . I did a video on 2x2 interfaces a year ago

1. Connect the output of the tape track that has SMTPE on it to the input of your SMTPE unit. 2. Connect the MIDI output of your SMPTE unit to the MIDI IN on your MIDI interface. 3. Within Cakewalk/Sonar, go to Preferences->Project/Clock, set Source to SMTPE/MTC - adjust the PPQ/Time Format to match the SMPTE code (if you can't remember, just match it to whatever the SMPTE unit is currently set to). Bear in mind, the SMPTE unit might actually be sending MTC rather than SMPTE - I know my old PPS100 was set to do that - so you might get away with not having to adjust anything. 4. Press Play in Sonar 5. Press Play on the tape machine If you're transferring stuff from tape, then replace step 4 with: 4.1 Connect your tape outputs to audio interface inputs 4.2 Add the required number of audio tracks to match the tape's audio tracks - set the sources to match the audio interface inputs 4.3 Arm the tracks 4.4 Press Rec in Sonar
