Thanks - yes I've read horror stories about moving Waves & ilok - I think I should be ok unauthorising them as long as my current PC doesn't die before I get the new one - it seems ok - just reporting a power surge every time it boots up so I need to go through the BIOS screen every time. The PC isn't Win 11 compliant and about 11 years old now so I was going to change it soon anyway - this issue just speeded up my decision!

Thanks - I think the biggest issue apart from the sample library relocation and software re installation will probably be the unauthorising and reauthorising of stuff with at least IK, ilok, Amplesound to do and almost certainly several more. I think I may be best to make a list of what may need. With VSTs I imagine I am safest to reinstall rather than just trying to swap the DLLs to the new PC. I have around 1,000 VSTs according to Cakewalk (though I assume that includes 32bit, 64bit and VST3) at the moment - I think I will have a lot less when I move over to the new PC!

Thanks for the detailed reply. I have some of the free Kontakt Player libraries and the Freddy Mercury Piano which I won. My other main sampled instruments are Garritan Personal Orchestra and some Amplesound instruments

Oh that's bad news! I'm getting a new PC and was hoping that I could just copy them over. I realise I'll have to reinstall software programmes but thought I could just copy all my libraries across. Are there any other libraries you have had to reinstall rather than copy eg IK libraries

Yep I had to reinstall two libraries this time!

I've asked this question over at the Computer forum (amongst others) but not had a response yet so pitching in here if that's ok?. I'm getting a new PC and my geeky friend is very insistent I should get M2 drives both for my system and data. System I am definitely happy to go for it but from reading around there seems to be the impression that M2s are not that much faster than SSd in loading samples etc. Anyone have experience of using them compared to SSDs?

I mentioned a potential SCAN spec a while back but had no responses - as it turns out I am now favouring sticking with Chillblast who built my current PC which has been very reliable but is not Win 11 compliant and at 10 or 11 years old is due for replacement. Chillblast have the advantage of a 5 year guarantee. My current PC is an i5 with 8Gb RAM which I have managed with to date but it has not been intensively used with Cakewalk and has managed most things I have tried to do with it. I only work with midi so no live recording. Chillblast has suggested a music production / light gaming spec as shown below. It has an M2 system drive but, on the advice of a friend, I am considering upgrading the data drive (which will have my samples and instrument sample sets) to M2 as well. I have been reading though that M2 makes little difference to sample time loading or performance. Does anyone have a view on this, or on the spec as a whole? I'll be getting a new PC soon and intend to pare back a bit - I have over 1,000 according to Cakewalk though I assume that includes duplicates of 32bit, 64 bit and VST3. I'm just doing a back up of my VST installers folder now and there's 225gb in there though that includes samples for sample based instruments I should add that the vast majority of these are free ones and others were bargains such as Total Studio Max for £125

You can download to any disc location you like by going into the settings cog in Product Manager. I would recommend backing up your existing zip files to another location as IK charge around £10 for opening up downloads after 180 days

Yes you need to put an instance of BBC Discover on each track - it is not multi timbral. There are key switches for the articulations in each instrument group though. I understand that the (paid for) Unify VST will allow you to combine instances of Discover but as I have not got this others would be better placed to advise

I had similar problems recently - I updated to most recent Decent Sampler and that seems to have helped I did, however, have a crash a few days ago when scrolling through my library of DS sounds when after loading a few sounds there was no audio coming from DS and the coloured keymapped area on the GUI turned white. When I closed the project CbB crashed but did produce a dump report which Dave Hilowitz is looking into

Hi all - processor advice & drive advice please! It looks like I may have to replace my PC a year before I was going to (it is not compatible with Windows 11 and is getting long in the tooth anyway). Some of the machines under consideration have Ryzen processors. I'll be using the PC for Cakewalk - midi (particularly using orchestras, Sampletank, Syntronik etc & loops only - no live audio recording) and for light gaming My friend has strongly suggested that I get M.2 PCIe (NVMe) drives due to their speed over SSD drives - Scan do a few ready built audio workstations with these but Chillblast only has one with the system drive as a NVMe but do not allow you to customise and add any additional NMVe drives (though they do allow other customisation which Scan do not). My friend is however a computer geek and always wants the best where I am satisfied if stuff works reasonably quickly! Be grateful for any thoughts on the above.
