What I've always wanted to have is a VST or whatever, from which you could drag and drop pre-made chords to the piano roll.  Different versions for piano, guitar and maybe other instruments.  Maybe there is one?

There are numerous chord assistance VST plugins nowadays that basically do just that: they assist you in creating a chord sequence within the plugin, that you can easily drag and drop into your DAW.

Check out Plugin Boutique Scaler, for example. Here's the Sound On Sound review.

  2. A customizable button bar - brilliant idea! (You're on a roll, Josh! 😃 ) It's like the Quick Access Toolbar in the Microsoft Office applications, where you can select what actions you want to show icons for. Buttons require less clicks than menus and they can also display the current state of the command.

I also really missed all the icons that were lost (and put into menus) when the current "Skylight" GUI was introduced.  Especially working in the Browser got a lot slower.

  3. Hi all!

To improve support for international characters, it would be really nice if Cakewalk supported UTF-8 character encoding of all text fields. That way, non-English characters could be used by the user in text fields in the application.

Fields that I have found troublesome:

    • Track names
    • Take lane description
    • Track description in Inspector
    • Browser Notes

Below is an example of using Swedish characters "å ä ö" in Cakewalk. You can type them and save...

But after re-opening, they are turned to Klingon: 😉

    Keep up the great work!

  4. Hi all!

VST2 instruments are in a grey font in the browser, which kind of makes them look "disabled" or "not usable" or such. Sure, VST3 is undoubtedly a newer standard, but VST2 is still going strong and in some cases still actually going stronger than VST3. It's misleading that VST2 instruments are outgreyed. 🤔

I don't believe it's possible to adjust this font color in the Colors section?

If a clear visual indicator between VST2 and VST3 is wanted (and it's probably a good idea), maybe make the icons a bit clearer and/or bigger instead?

Any chance you enabled the non-default  'aggressive' ThreadSchedulingModel=3 in AUD.INI (Preferences > Audio > Config File) despite warnings that it's experimental? Many who have tried it had a result like you describe, and many of those promptly forgot they had made the change and blamed the update... as usual. ;^)

Maybe it was the 'aggressive' ForumPostSchedulingModel = 3 that was enabled by mistake in AUD.INI by the OP?

I'm not saying things can't be improved, but manners could. 😉

  6. Hi @E-Wolf Music!

I love the Duplicate Clip feature and was a very vocal promoter for it to be implemented, so I love when people have opinions about it. :)

    1. To get what you're looking for in Cakewalk, you have to enable "Use Current Snap Settings on Duplicate Selected Clip(s)" in the Preferences / Customization / Editing. Then the Duplicate Clip feature follows your snap settings. I believe what most people usually want when duplicating clips is what you get with snap set to Snap By Whole. That way, empty space in the beginning and in the end of clips is retained. Check out the documentation here.

I'm a bit torn by Duplicate using snap. It makes Duplicating both flexible and... slow. I think duplicating is supposed to be super fast and something you can do without thinking, and without adjusting a lot of snap settings. "Oh, I had it set to 16ths. Dang, it was set to To. Ah, now it works."

    2. Good find! I had not tried this myself, but Duplicating while playing does not work as expected at all. It would be really nice if it would work! 👍

    3. I can see why you're frustrated. In Cakewalk, deleting notes has actually never automatically trimmed the end (or beginning) of the midi clip the note is in. The Bounce  to clip(s) command (keyboard shortcut CTRL + B for me, I'm not sure if that's default) is therefore something I press all the time, almost without thinking. Until this behavior has changed, I think it's what you need to do as well... 😬

All that said, Duplicate Clip has been giving me some unexpected behavior for me at times, but I haven't yet had the time to investigate it more.

But all in all, for me, this small command is one of the biggest additions to Cakewalk for the past 5 years! :)

I, too, own multiple DAW products - Pro Tools, Ableton, Studio One, FL Studio, Cakewalk, and as you say, each have their strengths and weaknesses, or differences.

What some folks do, is to use multiple DAW products to work on a given project - doing the midi work in one, some of the audio work in another, perhaps a 3rd for some of the editing or sequencing, etc.....

The products are tools, and having and using them does not have to be exclusive one versus another - you can do some of the work in one, and some of the work in another.

I appreciate that different tools are good at different things, but surely the process itself of switching DAWs one or several times is also a pretty time-consuming one? (Especially as there is no universal DAW project format.)

But maybe it's worth it if you're very fluent in several applications and can utilize the individual strengths of each app?

Let us know if we have to move this discussion to a separate thread. 😁

I appreciate your feedback. I agree. I started with AcidDJ but didn't want to pay for Sony Acid to upgrade. I ended up messing around with Reaper but never liked the interface.

So here we are, full circle, back to Reaper. For now.

You have most certainly done your homework, impressive research! 😀

Learning a DAW takes time and is an investment, so changing is not something most people do lightly. I'm always amazed by how many people actually know and use multiple DAWs, so I've always thought I should learn Live, but I've never really found the time to dig deep - I want to spend the time making music, not learning software. :)

I started a new project in Reaper last night. I can only describe it as a relief.  Yeah, it's not as pretty as CBB but at least now I can make music!

This is exactly why one should test several DAW:s before deciding which one to use. One might suit you, another one might not. :D

I myself tried Ableton Live when Gibson went bust - I make electronic dance music after all - and within 10 minutes I was swearing. You can't customize keyboard shortcuts!?  (But I've been told since it's supposedly possible. But even with a lot of Googling and manual reading I could not at the time figure out how that was done!) What I would change? In Live, to show the browser, you press CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + B. I kid you not. In Cakewalk it's just "B". Also, multi-monitor support in Live is extremely unflexible, it's obviously made for a single laptop screen.

So, what I'm trying to say: horses for courses, to each their own, different strokes, etc.

Best of luck with your music!

(Sorry, this discussion should probably not be in the "2020.05 Feedback" thread.)

The offline activation looks overly complicated.

To be honest, this kind of challenge-response method is almost a standard of how a software offline activations are done.

@Michal Mikulski I'm not sure what you mean by disabling making a track stereo. We fixed bugs where bypassing a plugin wouldn't remove its forced interleave.
If you were using that you were relying on a bug. You can still pan a mono track so I don't see what the problem is.

Michal Mikulski wrote in an edit (a bit camouflaged at the end of his post) that he solved his issue, so no worries. 😀

Yesss, I expermented before and I figure out that's with the Mono channels freeze. Because of that, I don't freeze mono instruments (vst) channels only stereo interment vst tracks.

Ah, with your excellent help and the help from @marled, I think the bakers can probably find and squash the mono freeze bug! :D

@Noel Borthwick Is this something you guys could maybe have a look at?

Marled had already sent a project to reproduce it:

I had invested some time to create a simple project with all the explanation and I had sent it to BandLab (request  243054, December 19).

    2.) +3dB weirdness:

I have reported this several times and it is still valid: Having a softsynth (AD2) with several audio outputs, some mono (interleave and synth output=mono, e.g. kick, snare), some stereo (e.g. overhead) and having their volume level set to my taste, then when I freeze the synth/tracks all mono tracks increase their volume about +3dB! This makes the combination of mixing and freezing painful!

Does the gain value change after freeze? Or is it at the same level, but you can just observe on the meters (and/or hear!) that it's 3dB louder?

Does it happen all the time for all soft synths, or just ones with multiple outputs?

EDIT: I saw this thread about the issue, where you participated. But it seems that no project was sent to Noel for reproduction of the error? If you did that, I think they could probably find the issue! 🙂

It has nothing to do with panes. The bus view is much simpler since it has no clip data to deal with. Many people prefer having a separation between tracks and buses so this isn't likely to change. If you want to work in one pane with similar functionality to buses, use aux tracks.

Noted, thanks for the reply Noel! :)

I do like the separation between tracks and buses myself, but I have been struggling quote a lot with copying bus automation so I kinda thought it was related.

  15. 4 hours ago, msmcleod said:

I think you need to copy the tracks & buses separately as the track view & mains view are separate sources / destinations.

2020.05 makes it easier to copy bus envelopes to tracks (and vice versa), but the downside of this is that it will paste the bus envelopes in the selected tracks if you set them as the destination.

What would you guys say about rethinking the concept of the separate panes for tracks and buses? The separation has been causing copy & paste issues in Cakewalk and Sonar for many, many years, and still seems to do so. I think that some kind of revamping or unifying the concept to a single view (or something similar) might help? So that all tracks and buses are considered equal. :) But maybe it's easier said than done...? 🤔

And since Patch Points are more like "regular tracks", it feels even more weird that buses are so messy when it comes to copy & paste of automation.

How do other DAW's manage buses, compared to tracks?

This is exactly what happens inside the plugin. Mono goes in and stereo comes out. There are several effects within a plugin. It works in other DAWs as well. The problem with Waves has been mentioned several times. Now that they've worked on the signal processing, I was just hoping that it would work properly now.

I agree. :) And I hope they will fix it!

But is my suggestion a workable workaround for what you are trying to do?

  17. 1 minute ago, Spieler said:

I had hoped that the problem with the mono/stereo plugins from Waves was finally solved. I tried the CLA series, but unfortunately it still doesn't work. Only mono comes out - too bad.

I haven't really understood the issue, but does it help if you force mono/stereo operation on the channel using the Stereo/Mono button?

    From the manual:

"The Mono/Stereo button in each track forces the track’s audio signal to enter any patched plug-ins as either mono or stereo, whether or not the tracks are mono or stereo. This allows you to use either mono effects on a stereo track or stereo effects on a mono track."

For example, I have been running stereo plugins on tracks with mono audio just by setting track to Stereo and then using a stereo plugin.

Sorry if I'm confusing things. :)
