I paid $1000 for my ever slightly used 1976 Series 1 in 1977 (MSRP was $2000). A quick web search says today's value of 1977 $1000 is $4475.
After 45 years it does not strike me that my $1000 was any real investment.
Footnote: The guy I bought it from was a P-Bass collector/seller. He admitted he did not know much about Alembics. It belonged to a young student (12 years old) of his who was unable to play the long scale. That is why he priced it "fairly" at 50% off the retail price.
My 'off the shelf' Series I sold new for $2000 in 1976, today a 1976/77 Series I tends to be in the $6-8K range.
Fixed for those who did not get the implied "used" value I was referring to.
?
Since that one is a custom build it's hard to say if it was an "investment".

This one is on Reverb right now for $5.5k, The body wood is rather plain compared to mine but other than the few worn spots it's a pretty good find for anyone who wants a 'vintage' Alembic for under $6K.
Here's my 1976 Series I
Except for the fact: I (officially) stopped playing guitar after three years and switched to bass.
I still play guitar with the skills of that time frame, so 4 guitars are, for me, extremely un-paltry. ?
