I've just got a used Dell XPS i7 16gb running Windows 11. I was expecting it to handle CbB with ease, only to find to my horror that it can't even run an empty project without audio dropping out. ? I'm going through all the online hints and tips to try and resolve this problem. Has any gone through anything similar with Dell XPS 15 touch 9570? Could anyone offer some help? ?

I haven't looked into the pricing yet. Isn't there a free limited functions version that he can try out? I want to see him actually using it before.

My son wants to get FL studio because he sees lots of gamers using it. I've been trying to steer him towards CbB and other programs, but he wants only what they geek-kids use. I'm gonna have to buckle soon.

Big thank you to everyone who took the time to listen. Amazingly I found an old backup of the original Sonar session. I need to substitute some of the effects and VSTs but I've got it back to more or less the same sound. However, the earlier track was a radio unfriendly 6 minutes long ? so I'm gonna make a long play version and put it up here soon. In an age of 30 second Tic Tonk musicians, I'm gonna go long play ?

Have you ever heard of a label called Twisted Nerve? It was started by Badly Drawn Boy and Andy Votel to release BDB's music, but along the way they picked up a roster of acts such as Dakota Oak, Alfie and Misty Dixon (mainly their mates). They put out a lot of compilations with instrumentals (heavily inspired by the sound of French new wave music), and this track would not have been out of place on one of those compilations. Great job - with all it's quirky glory

Really liked that guitar playing at the beginning. I don't think it's what you're going for, but the song writing reminds me a lot of 90s British indie bands such as Midway Still (who I've just googled and found are still going strong) - they had a heavier sound, but the sentiment is similar. It's that slightly off beat Kinks feel, I guess. Good job

Absolutely - we had one of those shops in our town and you nailed the sound. Where did the nature sounds come from? Did you source them yourself or were they library recordings? I ask because I do a lot of field recordings or mountain waterfalls and streams and seascapes, and I have a collection of sounds that you may find interesting for projects such as these.

This is an old track that I'm thinking of rereleasing. I no longer have the project files thanks to a hard drive incident, so I can only work on the master. I've tried to clean it up a bit, eq it, give it a bit of a vintage feel, but what you hear is what you get. It's meant to be quite full on intense - think early Swervedriver or Dinosaur Jnr All feedback appreciated.

I second that. I've got the latest Acoustica Standard 7 which comes with some fantastic tools for cleaning audio. And the loading time is simply amazing. Anyone who remembers using (and loving) Cool Edit Pro, will adore this.

Hi @Noel Borthwick I just wanted to let you know that I will be testing CbB in Windows 11 on my son's new laptop. I bought him an HP pavilion AMD Ryzen 7, 16gb system with W11. We've installed Cakewalk plus additional connect, Kontakt, some libraries. So far everything is running smooth as silk. I'm tempted to get one myself. My son is 13 years old and enrolled in the local conservatorio of music here in Italy where he plays piano. He's already light years ahead of me in terms of piano playing and theory, but I want him to get a headstart on music production so that he can have fun making music whilst learning some hard skills in the art of digital music production. His conservatory is old fashioned and doesn't really teach anything about music production/recording. If we come across any glitches while using CbB, I'll let you know here. On a side note: kontakt installed seamlessly on this setup. That's a first!

The BIG question is - what's your budget? If money is not a problem (if so, lucky you) then get someone to build your dream system for you. But if money IS an issue, you might want to also factor in future costs at this stage. You mentioned that you use sonar stock instruments such as Dimension and Session Drummer. Here's a reality check - I was using them on a 2 core laptop with 4 GB RAM and 60gb memory for years .... and they ran smoothly. You could buy a second hand system from 2017 and be able to run the music setup you've currently got without a hitch. Sooooo, if you are building this mega beast, sooner or later you're going to want to feed the beast more powerful plugins. This is where the expense comes in. Kontakt? If you don't already own it, straight out the box that's about 200 bucks. Libraries for contact? from between 50 to sky's-the-limit. Spitfire libraries? From 29 buck to eye-wateringly-expensive. Then all those effects in the deals section. Basically, once you've got the power under the hood, sooner or later you're going to want to use that power, so budget for that. But if you have no intention of upgrading your music system.... Well, I can't see the point of all that power for music. Just buy a second hand laptop and make tunes on the move.... And look cool doing it. ?

@Shane_B. You were certainly lucky with the Studio 1810. Having that card should do you service for a good many years on whatever system you choose to buy. Reading how you use your setup, I'd say you could probably buy any modern off-the-shelf system and probably get the performance you need for audio.... Which brings us back to the limiting factor in your choice of new system. Gaming. If you are going to be building the system with gaming in mind, audio production is really just an after thought. You're going to need to focus on tons of CPU and video card power (and lots of ram)...and that is not necessarily what you need for audio. For example, when recording audio or working with VSTs, you don't want CPU bursts, you want consistency. So when you see a CPU that can boost to 3+GHz, that is not much use when making music. You want it to be running at a nice smooth consistent rate, so it would be better to select a good CPU with a high base rate that won't overheat. Gaming requires boosting and overclocking, which is why gamers want those wanky neon cooling units....but for recording 4 inputs and working with wavs, that's like doing your shopping in a Ferrari. The same issue with graphics. Music production doesn't require a massive graphics card or insane display resolution. But if you work with video production, that becomes important. However, if the video card runs hot, you've got an issue with fan noise in your recordings (swings and roundabouts). If I might make suggestion. Why don't you get two separate machines? One for gaming and one for music. Since your music making needs seem modest, you could even go mobile (you've already got the usb sound card) and you could free yourself from that desk....become a mobile studio. Imagine being able to mix music in your bed, in a cafe, at a friend's house....rather than being chained to the desk. Just a thought.

@Shane_B. Most of what you mention in your first post is gaming and graphics.... You don't mention anything about your music needs. For example: what audio setup do you have? Do you need an external card? What's your normal usage? Do you multi-track? Do you use virtual instruments or record yourself? Will you need multiple drives to store kontakt libraries etc? All of the above would be useful to know for a DAW.
