Cakewalk Not Re-Opening After Closing Project: Could This be the Reason?
John Vere replied to Stephen Power's question in Q&A
Isn’t that the Behringer interface that doesn’t come with a driver so they tell you to use Asio4all ? -

Cakewalk constant dropouts when project path = D drive
John Vere replied to Sheens's topic in Computer Systems
This is a mystery because setting pathways in preferences has no actual bearing on how projects function. You can open projects from any drive including a external and the only difference would be the quality of the drive which definitely has bearing on projects performance. The pathways on Preferences are a way to set up a data drive so it will be the default when you perform certain open and save operations The global folder is not something that should actually even be used if you work with the default per project system. All audio is stored in the project folders audio sub folder. I only make 2 changes to the pathways. Projects I change the the root of E drive which is all for Cakewalk and audio recording. I have to choose the sub folder because I have about 6 sub categories for projects. The other pathway I change is I use a Export folder because I’m assembling albums or set lists of songs so it’s my way of organizing files. The rest I ignore because they are unimportant tome. What @Jim Roseberrysaid about running a test on your drive is totally important when this happens. Even fairly new SSD drives can slow down to a crawl. I use the Samsung Magician as most of my drive are those. -

Ah. So it was sort of a variation on the second monitor scenario. Glad you got it figured out. -

Looks like you didn’t enter his name correctly. It should have been in black like this @Jonathan Sasor -

Yes was the first one I did because I remembered it was the one you go to your account page on the web site. But after I installed it and opened Cakewalk it was listed but brackets showing it was not available. ?? Like the Ample bass it was installed differently than the other computer.?? I didn’t think this matters as long as it installed and is successfully scanned. This is when I opened the plug in manager on the old machine and started putting everything in the identical folders just in case. I had to uninstall and re installed the XLN manager and chose the exact same location this time and it worked. What happened was for the Ample bass I tried dragging it from the wrong folder to the correct folder. That is when Cakewalk started crashing. But still it seems weird that this put things in such an unstable condition. In the past I guess I was just lucky. I normally just let plug ins install to the default locations. But I always prevent 3rd party stuff from going to the Cakewalk folder. Now the projects at least open and all my instruments are good to go but there’s a short list of missing effects plug ins that are actually not missing but seems Cakewalk can’t cope with which folder they are now in. So I have to click on the ones in brackets and use “replace” and just replace it with the same one. Bummer is you of course lose the pre sets. But I’m pretty consistent in my settings so no big deal. Im to lazy to figure out transferring them even though I know it can be done. Thank goodness Addictive drums loaded up with my kit that took 2 years to refine. I immediately saved it as a pre set. So just that one little hiccup otherwise it was your typical 1 day spent rebuilding your DAW. -
Keep Losing "Console View" (Solved)..
John Vere replied to mark skinner's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
As I said Workspaces are not per project. I think that’s screensets which I have never tried so can’t confirm. What happened when you just press D? Thats The easiest way to open the multi dock . And in the very odd case that there’s no console view you can go to views up in the main menu and add it there. And using the workspace none has the drawback of if you open the project on a different computer then things are wrong. Example your project was saved on a dual monitor set up and you open it on a one screen set up like a laptop using a different workspace like basic. For me this results in the console view being opened and floating and covers the whole screen. Before we had workspaces I think this resulted in a completely missing multi dock . It would trip people up all the time and they would be on the forum here asking what happened to the multi dock? First answer was always,”Turn on your second monitor dude” I have a feeling when you choose none this might still happen. -

John Vere replied to mark skinner's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
When you say you loose console view are you saying there’s no tab in the lower left? What happens when you press D Workspaces are global to all projects. You might see a quick flash of the last state the project was in when last saved but the chosen workspace will override it and show. Are you saving the change to your workspace ? I’ve never experienced any issues with them changing without me being involved. I have clear instructions in these videos on using these features. the multi dock: https://youtu.be/9K71S1kvvNY?si=ypK-hRgdg9xMzZen Workspace: https://youtu.be/Tce02wE_TPM?si=GFOJRK0hy6NSfG_p Keyboard shortcuts :https://youtu.be/lqXhWfPG1Ew?si=w2i-0pFKcHuhr8lf -
For me most passwords are saved by Google Chrome. I don’t let it save sensitive stuff but for things like my plugins and Cakewalk it seems safe enough. Just today as I had to install a dozen or more paid for plug ins on brand new computer I first installed Chrome and my user name and passwords where all there for each web site and my accounts. The serial numbers I keep in a document that’s also on the cloud so easy to find. But then my iPhone is a hassle because it doesn’t sync with Chrome, just Google itself. I don’t do anything sensitive on my phone I don’t trust it.

All is good now. As always it's a plug in! But it's very weird that safe mode didn't work. That sucks because then you don't actually know what was causing the crash. I think it was just Ample P Bass which is on every project. I re installed it and this time made sure it was in the correct folder. After that Cakewalk now opens. Now the projects all open but with a long list of missing stuff that I will have to add. As I was troubleshooting I downloaded and ran the Resplendence Latency Monitor. I notice they had another free app called Why So Slow which was prefect as it did a pretty good job of testing all my components. It passed with flying colors. Thank goodness it was just a stupid plug in. Thanks everyone for your help! -

Just checked in Windows update and sure enough the chipset was waiting to be installed. I keep forgetting that after a fresh install you should really keep running Windows update over and over. This might have something to do with it. Needs to be done anyway. So Cakewalk is on hold until this puppy is stable and finished updating. It was probably trying to update while I was doing all this. -

I’m not sure . At one point there was a screen that showed a bunch of check marks beside those. It was the MSI MoBo app I think. But this got me thinking I might be missing a bunch of those c++runtime things. My old computer has 2 pages of them and this one so far has only 2 entered and those were with plug ins. Maybe Cakewalk doesn’t install them? Im also going to try just a midi only project with the tts-1. I will also try a different audio interface. The Motu is not exactly a Windows device. -

OK Installed Splat and exactly the same issue so it's not Cakewalk. Not sure what to do other than start over with Windows and hope for the best. -

Actually no. I thought W11 was even smarter than 10 so it is assumed it would look after it's self? But I'll see what happens with other software. This deal had me at a standstill -

Now safe mode won't open them! I even reinstalled Cakewalk, re booted, now no older projects will open at all period. Lets see how Splat does? -

It gets weirder and weirder. Sometime the projects open fine with a list of what is not working. I use Replace synth to replace with exact same one and its fine, press play crash. Then same with some plug ins like You Lean meter, try to delete it, crash Why is Cakewalk so unstable when it comes to plug ins???? And all stuff I've used for years without issues?? First part of my rebuild took no time at all, and now I find myself wasting time on something that should not be this complicated. The plug ins are all installed same locations as old machine, they are showing the same in Plugin Manager, all are on the lists and they all open and work. Old projects, crash crash crash. And after a project crashes 2 or 3 times it can no longer be opened unless you use safe mode. -
I just built a new Computer, W11 etc. Pretty painlessly to install Cakewalk not sure why some people have issues. Took all of 2 minutes. I also installed Sonar 8.5 with all boxes unchecked except for a few plugs. Ran Command center and only installed CA 2A and Dim Pro. Then started installing my plug ins and authorizing etc. I opened the plug in Manager on old machine and installed everything to the same locations as were there. This is only 4 places. VST 3 in Common files, Cakewalk VST folder, then the VST folder and the Steinberg VST folder. Cakewalk crashes upon loading projects I was just working on in old machine. I did get it to open in Safe mode of course. Only the SI Drums worked. Addictive drums toasts a warning about the file location which is BS because it's exactly as it says it should be. I have often opened projects on different computers and never had this happen so I'm stumped. This project only has my day to day stuff that is pretty straight forward. Ample P bass, Addictive drums, SI drums and Sweetcase. I can't even get Loudmax or You Lean meter working there all on the bad guy list except for SI drums. What I'm going to try in uninstall all these plug ins 100%, and see if Cakewalk will open with them missing, it should.

It used to be under Power and Sleep- Additional settings.

I’m just installing all my software to a new computer so later on I’ll be installing OBS. I’ll see then if there’s some setting I’m not mentioning that is needed. Basically if Cakewalk is seeing the Loopback then OBS should too. I don’t have any on board or HDMI audio on my current computer so it forces all apps to recognize my interfaces. I have a feeling OSB defaults to using the windows audio as in its using WASAPI shared. But maybe it has a setting to use ASIO.

My Zoom has a HiZ toggle on 2 channels. If your interface has that or sometimes they call it instrument, then the all important impedance is correct and all will be good. As @southcoaststeve just said I sometimes record both the amp mike and a DI into 2 separate tracks. Then hard pan them. The DI track I’ll use TH3 on. Lots of options and creative stuff for guitars. My Boss tuner has 2 outputs so I can split the signal there. But a good pedal board can be used directly with excellent results. As I said I have a Blackstar modeling amp with usb but that’s my worst option. I prefer my good old analog pedals to all that digital processing. -
Spent a few hours trying to optimize it. Things are not where they were in Windows 10. One thing I can’t find is the USB power sleep settings. I use one drive for a lot of documents so I have to leave it on but the whole syncing crap put all the icons from my old computer on the desktop of the new one. Dang. Of course there’s no software yet so they are pointless and I had to delete them. So now installing my apps and plug ins. CbB was pretty straight forward I’m not sure why people seem to have problems. Just did the bare bones of 8.5 for True Piano, tempo delay Session Drummer and Lexicon. Now I can go straight to CCC. I don’t think I need to install Sonar Plat or X3. I’ll just grab my goodies which of a lot of them I no longer use. I’m not going to install any VST’s on here that I’m not currently using.

Well I ended up just purchasing from PC world for $100 Can. taxes in. This is Windows 11 Pro so looks like I save $125 off regular price. PC is all put together haven't done one in 10 years. Not much has really changed other than the new M2 SSD drives. Just installing windows now. Not looking forward to installing everything else!! Haven't done that for a long while either. But everything's on a external drive so just sort of time consuming. Will have to de authorize a bunch of stuff on my Laptop. Case fans will need some tweaking. Not loud but not sure why they are even on right now. Might have used the wrong sockets. Corsair 400D Airflow EVGA 700 Gold PS Intel i5 -13400F 10 cores up to 4.6GHz. Deep Cool AK400 CPU cooler MSI GeForce RTX 3060 12GB MSI Pro B760-P Patriot Viper DDR4 64 GB Two Samsung 970 1TB SSD M2 drives. So far with the OS its about $1,500

It’s simple. Guitar, Pedal Board, Amp. From there you have possibly 3 choices. Best- mike the amp, speakers are part of your sound. Down side is best if you live alone in you home. But this is really one of the best ways to record guitar. A line out can be good but only if it is after the pre amp. Some aren’t. And they can be noisy if not balanced. Might as well plug your pedal board into the audio interface. The amp might not be contributing much at all. Pointless. Next is the Amps USB audio interfaces connection if it available. Yes but only if there’s a proper ASIO audio driver from a manufacturer who knows how to write one. If done right this eliminates noise. If done wrong ( my Blackstar amp) it can be very noisy so pointless. And it requires you to turn off your regular interface so now you can’t hear anything. And some are only 16 bit. Usually Pointless.
