There was a time back a few years ago (5?) when Cakewalk was crashing for lots of people if you didn’t save it after so many changes. They seem to have fixed that. But back then I just saved every 10 minutes or so. I thought auto save would be the answer but I still got crashes and then I would be lucky to figure out where and what had been recovered. My folder became very messy with copies. I found it easy to just save. I think I used ctrl S But I haven’t had Cakewalk crash for a long time so I’ve gotten careless and go hours with out saving. I need to stop doing that ?

So is this using Select None? Funny as that used to be my habit in the past prior to whenever it was the Export widget was added. After that export always worked perfectly with out fuss. Glad I read this as I’ve been recording my narration for my tutorials in 20 to 50 second takes. I end up with 14 to 20 tracks all different lengths. These then match up to the screen capture segments. Gives me time to set up for the next scene. A big thumbs up to the new Export Dialogue. I was impressed with how easy it was to export these into a nice folder all numbered correctly. I actually expected them to all be as long as the longest track. Good to know I can fix that Thanks.

I guess the new ones are 3 now.

I ‘m sorry I don’t have an answer mostly because I never would use sound on sound. To me that’s a bizarre choice. A hold over from tape days. I always use overwrite and rarely use the lanes. I have a USB foot switch that is programmed with W and R and Space. But if I do use them I use a new lane for each take. I can see that if you use S on S then that would create layers all on the same track? I thought they automatically went to the next track? The whole concept of the lanes is the visual of your takes. All I can think to say is try recording using more than one track or lane as it is.

Go to the documentation found in the help menu and read the section on using take lanes. Once you understand them it’s not hard to do what you are wanting. Sorry nobody seems to have answered so this will bump it back to the top. I personally have no experience with setting up a control surface but there are others who do. Defiantly a weird one. What I see in the screen shot is the track is soloed but all the meters on other tracks are active which I don’t think they should be.

Not with Motu. Support was very clear about using a dedicated USB3 port.

Yes it was after I bought the M4 I realized they were a Mac Centric company.

You should contact Motu support. They got back to me within a day. I wasn’t happy about the solution but it did solve the problem

Mr @bitflipper is our resident keys expert. I believe he has years of experience with live stuff. But your keyboard controller should easily be able to do this. My Roland has a few assignable buttons I’m sure can be mapped to track focus. I even think my el cheapie Akai can too.

The audio buffer has nothing to do with midi. Well you ruled out the buffers and so that tosses it back to a hardware problem. Try a different controller, cables, midi interface etc

I would use the RCA tape outputs and a RCA to 1/8” cable you used to get cheap at dollar stores when those MP3 players were popular. I still have a collection of them because I also used them from my laptop to my home stereo and my PA mixer. Actually the worst issue is if you record silence the noise floor would be horrendous like 45db. The audio input circuit is worth about $3.00. Outputs are normally much better quality but nobody who builds computers would be expecting some one to use the input for anything but a Skype call

It’s not the software. First 2000 plug ins is obsessively a lot. most of us might have 200 and that’s too many. So You do need to use manual scan if your going to horde that many plug ins. What I have done is create a VST folder where I put all the junk I never use. There’s a lot. That folder is not on my scan list. If I do desire to try one I will copy it to my regular folder and because I don’t need manual scan off, Cakewalk adds it. Simple. Cakewalk loads in less than 10 seconds for me.

Hey, who are we to judge what someone thinks sounds good or not. But it's not something I would even try. I have made it work using a small mixer. But then the mixer cost as much as an audio interface.

You got to be kidding. That's crazy. Someone needs to talk to the developers about this default workspace thing. Causing to many posts here

You will have nothing but trouble trying to record audio with a on board sound card. You can do a lot with on board but I recommend a proper ASIO audio interface if recording audio is part of your plans. # 1 is your tracks will not be in sync without an ASIO driver. And on board does not support ASIO with any degree of success. Asio4all is not ASIO it is a wrapper for WDM mode. WASAPI is the best driver mode for on board.

Is yours buss powered? My M4 is bus powered and Motu support recommended I buy a PCIe USB 3 card. Thanks Motu, you saved $10 on a wall wrt and now I have to spend $30 to get power. That solved all my weirdness with the exception of I get distorted recordings randomly where the only fix is to re boot the computer. Have no clue why. It's defiantly to do with running other apps when Cakewalk is open. Never had this issue with my Tascam or Focusrite. Also it's supper fussy about everything must be set to either 44.1 or 48. Windows, Cakewalk all my audio and video software, everything or things don't work. Might be something you could try too. Motu is sort of on my s--t list now. Mostly it behaves and all is good. Be a while before I need another interface and hopefully this time I'll have the cash for what I really want- RME.

Well thanks for bringing it up as I actually learned a few new features by exploring a bit deeper to figure this out. I didn't know about the re clicking a track with control held down to keep them all open. I used to just re click them all. I also never realized that the side bar is actually a mini track view. I always thought it was just a midi track view because that's the default. I never thought there's be a reason to want to see an audio track. But yes, you need that for lining up midi bass with audio kick track or visa versa. It's my payback for helping on the forum- I learn new stuff.

The other thing to watch for is sometimes a window is hidden either off screen if you sometimes use a second monitor, or behind the main window.

Are you saying it's missing from the views menu?

Are saying you only hear the hum when the guitar is plugged into the system? Is this a electric guitar? This could be a case of a bad cable or a pre amp miss match. Are you having to crank the pre amp on the Tascam way up? Are you using the guitar input and the guitar selection switch?
