And even for the small legacy plugins there's a solution: I use Microsoft ZoomIt. It will give you the possibility to zoom into the screen spontaneously - just by pressing Ctrl+4.  Ctrl+ArrowUp/down will give you more or less zoom. The zoomed cutout will follow your mouse. Just try it as a workaround. Best regards.

That's a good tip! 👍 In Windows 10, you can press WIN + NUMPAD+ for the built-in magnifier, I suppose that gives similar results.

Of course much of this is all preference and how you work and use CbB.

I do have a 27 inch main monitor and am pretty happy with it.  The thing is I also have an old flat screen monitor that I use for Picture playback only and another smaller monitor that I use for Console view.  I could easily doc the console and view it on the 27 monitor in front of me.  And I feel I would be pretty good with it.

My main monitor is set at 1920 x 1200 and 100%--and I'm good with that.

    Hope I helped.

Hi Jimbo! A lot of screens there, cool! :)Yes, it seems 27" is very popular, and probably rightly so... although a 1920x1200 sounds like a lowish resolution for 27", but should look great!

I use a 32" 2k monitor (2560 x 1440) and its a great size to have lots on the screen but still easily readable. It is also a great size to have studio monitors on each side if that is you setup.

    Thanks for your input, Jacques!

Yes at 32", 1440 resolution should be very well readable... although a dual monitor setup requires you to sit rather far from it? :) I'm monitoring very nearfield, at about 130cm (51 inches), which is troublesome for dualscreen...

    I use a 29" widescreen 2560x1080 that looks great @ 100, 125, 150, & 175%.

Hi again, sjoens. :)That also sounds like a nice and large monitor for the selected resolution. I'm happy even non 100% scaling looks good, even though I can't get that to happen here. 🤔

  3. Summary
I just bought a 25" Dell at 2560x1440 (QHD) resolution and I just cannot get a satisfactory experience with Cakewalk since I have to use 125% scaling and Cakewalk does not like that. :(

    Questions for you guys:

    1. Is anyone using a 27" with 100% scaling, is that workable? Not too small?
    2. Or is 4K on 27" with 200% scaling another option? I'm wary of this, as it seems like asking for trouble to do anything but 100% scaling...

The fractional scaling problem (125% etc)
Since 2560x1440 resolution is too small to use at 100% scaling on a 25" monitor, I have to use 125% scaling in Windows and that's where the problems start. 125% scaling is the only feasible option for me, but as @jono grant pointed out back in 2020, "Cakewalk looks great at 100 or 200% but not as good in between like 150 or 175." I will have to add 125% scaling to the "no good" list as well.

At anything but 100% scaling, all Arturia's lovely synth GUI's look blurry in Cakewalk, but Ableton Live, for example,  displays them crisply no matter the scaling setting. It is unfortunate that Cakewalk is still non-DPI-aware in these high resolution days.

    Solutions
As was pointed out in a Reddit thread, with non-DPI-aware apps, there are two options:

    • Using “System (Enhanced)” DPI-scaling mode in W10 for making the app almost DPI-aware - this improves menus, but not plugins.
    • pixelized upscaling at integer scaling ratios (2.0 in case of 4K at 200%) instead of blurry upscaling at fractional ratios like 1.25 (125%) for those apps the “System (Enhanced)” option can’t help with.

    Thanks for any thoughts!

You can change envelope colors in Preferences > Customization > Colors > Automation.

Thanks for the input, @sjoens! That could be helpful.. but I'm sorry,  I don't understand if it's possible. :)

I have looked through all options under Color Category "Automation", but cannot find any way to set custom colors for plugin parameter envelopes on audio tracks or for MIDI CC envelopes on midi tracks. You can tweak 30-40 different bus send envelopes and some standard ones like volume, mute, pan and clip gain, but that's it?

Envelope colors for plugin parameters and MIDI CC's are unaffected even if you change UI themes or switch color presets (Customization > Colors). They seem color change resistant? 🤔

I love the visibility of the older, thicker, envelopes, see below. (The new, thinner, envelopes were introduced back in 2021.04.)

Maybe "Thicker envelopes" could be an option under View > Display?

Interesting. Yeah, I was the guy who reported the broken move to folder thing and it looked like it was fixed. But there's definitely something funky still going on that I'm able to reproduce now that I'm trying a few tests, even more so than what you're seeing. Let me hunt down a dev and chase up our last chat. :)

Brilliant, great work! :D You can always refer them to the animated GIF at the top in this thread, if needed.

  6. EDIT: I just saw this was fixed in the latest version. I will upgrade. :) Please move on.

EDIT2: This is still a bug with 2022.06 build 028. It works as expected with the right click "Move To Folder" option.

Drag and dropping multiple tracks into a track folder reverses their order, see video below. Can anyone reproduce?

I am on Cakewalk 2022.02 Build 039. I know it's not optimal for bug reporting that I'm not on the latest, sorry!

  7. The keyboard nerd here with an additional tip:

If you have "Recycle plugin Windows" enabled, you can temporarily disable it by keeping CTRL pressed while you double click a plugin. ⌨️ 😀

Many thanks all! I wouldn't have guessed "Recycle Plugin Windows" meant that.

Yeah, I agree it's too cryptical. Recycling is obviously the future, but it's not self-evident what plugin recycling means... 😂

  8. Hi all!

I would love if envelopes could be made brighter/thicker for better visibility (when not using Automation Lanes). I am referring to envelopes for plugin parameter on audio tracks and envelopes on midi tracks, for example MIDI CCs.

It would be enough if this is applied just to the selected controller in the Edit Filter. Visually, the envelopes could be like how the envelopes were before the thinner envelopes were introduced last year.

It would also be great if one could easily change the color of individual envelopes on the fly. Sometimes they clash with the background.

Case in point: Which envelope is selected in the Edit Filter in the image below? 🤭

Keep up the great work! ❤️

  9. I just tried experimental EnableWin10DPIAwareness=1 option (introduced back in 2021.04) when using 125% scaling in Windows, but I couldn't see any improvement in clarity. Does anyone else see a difference?

Would be awesome if the DPI awareness got some love, at some point in the future! 👍

Either way.  You wouldn't do that when working between views, tho.

If you want to tab between floating views and the main view, you cannot have Inspector or Browser floating. They stop the tab process once they're in focus. Inspector wins if they're both floating.

If they're both docked, any other floating window can tab back and forth between the main view (Track View). However, the more views you have floating, the longer it can take as tabbing follows a specific order noted in my earlier post.

FWIW Sonar X# has similar but slightly different behavior.

My head spins when I try to make sense of this focus mess... 😱 But as you say, the Inspector definitely causes problems with focus.

If none of the Bakers happen to reply here in a few days, I will email this bug report to Cakewalk to ensure they see it.

  11. @msmcleod Can you reproduce these CTRL+TAB focus issues that I and @sjoens have?

To sum up my findings: I have managed to introduce the problem consistently when I open the Browser. As soon as the Browser is opened (undocked and floating as a separate window on my a second screen), I cannot CTRL+TAB focus back to the main Cakewalk window. If I have several undocked windows, focus switches between those, without ever getting back to the main window.

The same problem occasionally occurs with an undocked and floating PRV, but I think the Browser is the culprit here too, somehow.

@sjoens I'm not sure I fully understand your summary? :)

    Not working here either.

On a side note: Tried to search Keyboard Shortcuts for Ctrl and only one result shows up... when there should be 1/2 a hundred.

On another side note: WHY is the Keyboard Shortcuts window delaying so long in Preferences? It also stops at the 1st letter when I try to type anything in the search box. Then Preferences disappears 1/2 a dozen times while trying to type any word there. To get Preferences to unhide I have to click on the main window.

I have all of Cakewalk listed to not be scanned with WD.

Something screwy going on with the Keyboard Shortcuts window!

THANK YOU @sjoens for verifying the Browser focus bug! 🙏😀 Woho! It has been driving me crazy on and off for years, now we have a repro for the Bakers! :)

I totally agree with you - the very long delay when opening the keyboard shortcuts window, and occasionally when working in it, is very workflow-prohibitive. I think it is reading all the shortcuts from the Windows registry or something?

The Keyboard shortcuts window could be a good candidate for a total makeover... it's done it's job well for years, but it's time to go to the gym and get a total makeover. :D

    How many projects open?

Always just one project open (it was a good question!).

I think I have some (weird) repro progress:

I have managed to introduce the problem when I open the Browser, and it actually seems consistent. As soon as the Browser is opened (undocked and floating as a separate window on my a second screen), I cannot CTRL+TAB focus back to the main Cakewalk window. If I have several undocked windows, focus switches between those, without ever getting back to the main window.

Can you see if you can CTRL+TAB focus from an undocked and floating Browser window back to the main window?

  14. 3 minutes ago, msmcleod said:

CTRL + TAB will do nothing when it's actually docked.

If it's undocked, is the PRV actually visible?  It might be that it's minimized and isn't obvious you've CTRL + TAB'd to it.

When I have the problem, the PRV is definitely undocked and floating on my secondary monitor. The interesting thing is that I can CTRL+TAB the focus from the undocked PRV back to the Track View, but not the other way around. (I am not using the MultiDock.)

But as I mentioned, I suddenly got it to work as expected yesterday after fiddling with MultiDock settings back and forth. I will do more testing to see if I can understand what it is that gets in the way sometimes. :)

  15. Our own, always very clever usability guy @Heinz Hupfer has a partial solution for the switching problem from 2019: to use the PRV in the multidock as a workaround. Then you can switch to the PRV (now in the multidock) with CTRL+TAB from the main window (Track View).

Unfortunately, it's not really a workable solution for me, as I constantly close and open the PRV on selected tracks (ALT+3 to open) and the multidock doesn't remember its position on the second screen.

  16. Hi all!

Can someone help me check if this is just a weirdness in my system or a bug?

If you use floating windows - a floating PRV in this example - then I cannot switch focus from the main window to the floating PRV, using Windows standard shortcut CTRL+TAB.

But once the floating PRV window (or any other floating window) has focus, I can switch it back to the main window with CTRL+TAB. It behaves like this in an empty project for me and I'm not using screensets nor workspaces.

I'm on Cakewalk 2022.02 build 039.  This is a bit annoying for me, as the biggest keyboard nerd here on the forum... 🤓😉  Thanks!

UPDATED July 12: Description with repro

I think there are some intermittent issues with CTRL+TAB focus shifting between undocked/floating windows.

I have managed to introduce the problem consistently when I open the Browser.

Select multiple clips and change the name from Clip Name.

Thanks for your input, I should have clarified that I'm after multiple clip rename using the bindable keyboard shortcut. :)

On a side note: As a test, I opened up Sonar Platinum and “zapped” all bindings - the delay in the Keybindings Preference dialogue box still happened.  So it's probably not from the database getting its knickers in a knot from years of adding custom keybindings (which I have done)

It is interesting that the delay still happens even with no bindings. I haven't this checked with ProcMon, but maybe Cakewalk enumerates all potential keyboard shortcuts in the registry every time you open the dialog?
