It's worth checking out (or at least reading the release notes) as we go through updates. We're certainly striving to increase stability with updates.

Maybe if you've got a deadline "on Monday" you might want to hold off, but if you've got a couple months to go, it could be worth it to check out an EA. Maybe we fixed something that's been bugging you, or optimized performance on something. I actually used the early iterations of the Arranger to help write a song on a record I put out last month.

The rollback is simply there just in case.

First of all, I love what you guys do and am super grateful!

All I'm saying is that evaluating new things takes time even if everything goes perfectly. And, from time to time, small gremlins might also show up... after all, this IS software we're talking about. :) I work in IT, so maybe I'm just damaged... 😂

@Noel Borthwick @Jonathan Sasor Oh and I never got to thank you guys properly for Duplicate Clip! It was something I longed for for years. And now that it respects Snap By, I am in techno drum programming heaven! It's the best thing since sliced loops! 🎚️🎹😁 You guys rock!

Sorry for the double post, I can't edit the previous one with my phone. Thank you for the roll-back option, I am sure that many people that is working on a tight deadline doesn't want to wait for a hotfix.

When working on tight deadline, I'd recommend staying away from EA's to begin with.

In fact, I'd say that most studio people don't upgrade at all during deadlines... I lagged 3-4 Cakewalk releases behind during an intense period, where stability was priority #1.

  3. This is how my Cakewalk behaves, I belieeeve I haven't remapped the default keybindings: 😁

    1. When the mouse pointer hovers over the Drum PRV, then ALT + scrollwheel does nothing.
    2. When the mouse pointer hovers over the regular PRV area, ALT + scrollwheel zooms in horizontally.
    3. Pressing CTRL + LEFT/RIGHT zooms in horizontally, regardless of focus.

And oh, you should probably make the thread name a bit more descriptive. :)

The new functions bring up a little  issue  that concerns Keyboard Shortcut managing.

    I would ask either

    • update the menu item Key Binding reminder text, or
    • Don't allow custom (i.e. multiple)bindings on default bindings

Hm, did I understand correctly: if you already have something bound for A, the new update will add the Arranger View to A so you have two functions on A?

Wow!  Thank you!! Can't help but feel I played a tiny part in this!

I just read your thread about it from last month, what a ruckus you had! 😱 What IS that Enhanced Keyboard Editing Mode anyway? (I read the manual but still don't really get it.)

If Cakewalk had had an on/off indicator for that mode, it would have been easier for you to troubleshoot.

(In fact, I believe Cakewalk needs more indicators for features that are a bit tucked away: when any track(s) are hidden, when auto preview and looping is enabled in the browser, for example.)

Edit: I just checked my own bindings: I've had "Solo all selected tracks" on Num 0 for years myself...

Furthermore I have found out that there are some risks, so if you change the order of your song, you still have to manually handle "note overlaps", i.e. notes that start a tiny bit earlier then the section or those that do overlap the section a bit.

I think probably I prefer to use Ripple Edit for a "real" order change of an advanced song.

When rearranging with Ripple Edit you have to manually handle overlaps as well... so the Arranger Track should be a quicker way to do more complex restructuring? Although it might be easier to be observant and "catch" all overlap problems if you do it as you go along while Ripple Editing...

Nevertheless, as you said it'll be an amazing "play tool", and probably not just in early stages but also in later stages if some alternative ideas happen to come up.

There'll be no more: "Imagine that the break here builds up and climaxes to this part over HERE instead... like THIS! *trying frenetically to click at another point in the timeline at the exact right moment, but failing as usual to demonstrate the full extent of the greatness of said idea*" 😜

Yeah that is true but I think that is mainly due to the pandemic situation and maybe they were preparing some event for the 2-year anniversary thing that was delayed for a reason.

    I'm hoping you're right. :)

To be honest, in this modern way of releasing small/incremental software updates often I've been bit by more bugs than ever before, and I'm not talking about Cakewalk here. And I also believe the constant releases encourage developing low hanging fruits in general, at least to some extent... so I am thrilled that Bandlab is creating something that takes a long time!  😁

I've been a bit worried that we've not seen any really big updates since the Bandlab phase started.  Don't get me wrong, I love the updates we've been getting and am very grateful indeed, but I've started to become a bit nervous that we'd not be treated with "big new features", like stuff you see in releases such as Cubase 10. That would risk making Cakewalk dated in the long run. So again, I am thrilled that Bandlab is creating something that takes a long time! I'll gladly wait, even though I started this thread...  ☺️

Then you should have been around when the demise of SONAR and the entire Cakewalk, Inc. was announced. SONAR was a paid product.

BandLab's Cakewalk, on the other hand, isn't dependent on the sales of licensing fees in order to thrive, therefore its survival is not as tied to the fluctuations of the economy as a DAW that depends on selling licenses for revenue. How many people are shelling out $300 licenses for DAW software right now? It's the payware titles that are going to be looking at trouble.

BandLab is a well-funded company who like to acquire and nurture much-loved MI brands. Cakewalk is one of four free DAW's in their portfolio.

One of the side effects of not needing to grub for license fees is that when the developers want to really work on the product, they can hold the next release longer than usual to make sure that the new feature(s) are working properly, that whatever bug fixes are sound, etc. without worrying that the company needs upgrade license money to pay their salaries.

Hehe, yes I was around then as well, I've been around since Pro Audio 8.5 or so.  (In fact, I invested in the lifetime updates almost exactly one year before the demise of Cakewalk Inc.! 😁)

I agree with all your arguments and sincerely hope you are right. But I myself cannot claim any inside knowledge into the finances of Bandlab or rather more importantly, their priorities. As a "free side product", I do get a feeling that it might "sit looser", relatively speaking, compared to a product that actually makes the company money, but if the company is rich, then we're good. (And I did get the impression that Meng was indeed rather... solvent. :) ) Sorry, I did not intend to start a full scale debate about Bandlab's business model, so I'll just end it here. :)

I'm off to re-explore the great SysEx features of Cakewalk with my almost forgotten Access Virus B! :)🎹

Pretty sure the last one was in January.  So we are now getting closer to 3 months.

There is also this corona virus thing that is impacting businesss globally.    Without obvious activity during this time, I think it is a fair question to ask.

I wasn't worried, but I can understand how others would be curious.

Exactly, those were some of my thoughts. And it also seemed that there was unusually low participation from staff during a couple of months (although it just goes to show we are in fact very spoiled with that normally)... 🤗 Anyway, I'm at ease now that Bandlab showed some signs of life. 😉

A few years ago, Cakewalk tried to create a Sonar version for Mac OS, but it was ultimately cancelled. Please see (and translate) the discussion below for more details. :)

same issues wether track automation, bus volume (or other) automation... this has to do with "under-the-hood" things with CbB

What version of CbB are you using? I've actually stayed at 2019.09 so far, as the later releases introduced a lot of buffer changes that seemed to caused a lot of stir. Maybe they're solved ny now, but I'm in an important phase and can't have disturbances. :)

Sorry if this is obvious, but as you mention "buzzing" and distortion in a heavy project: have you tried different (= larger) ASIO buffer sizes? In another thread recently, someone was complaining about latency but used plugins that absolutely required big buffers to work properly, like Output's Kontakt stuff etc.

Edit: Thanks for the tip about True Dynamics by Kazrog, will check it out. Seems they adore it at Gearslutz. :)
