Yeah, they rarely sound good let alone great. For me, Frampton Comes Alive is one of the few exceptions. And it was touched up very little. They beefed up the crowd noise on one of the four shows, they edited a keyboard intro and they had to fix where a bass drum mic was kicked over. Other than that, it's all natural. Just a super tight band captured on their best shows. But yeah, for the most part live shows are meant to be experienced live. That way u have the benefit of visuals to add to the experience. For instance, I know if I have an off night playing wise, I'm able to make up for it with my upside down finger tapping, my David Lee Roth like high kicks and my buttless chaps. However, I may have to cut down on the high kicks. I keep slipping on all the panties on the stage 😉

Good point. And of course, those same musicians & engineers are pretty much all using those same tools too. It's kinda like steroids in pro bodybuilding. It's not cheating cause they all do it. It's become standard practice. They just don't brag on it. Editing music has been the standard industry practice for decades now. Pretty much every album we love was edited in multiple ways to save time & money and showcase the songs in their best light. Those are all good things.

Amen John. However, I don't look at it as cheating. And if it is, then the studio has always been about cheating. Just the ability to do a second take is technically cheating. You can't do that live. And how long have people been doing punch ins, cutting tape, etc? No, I view being a musician like being a NASCAR mechanic. The studio is the garage where we're EXPECTED to build an outstanding car because everyone knows we have the luxury of time & lots of tools. And we HAVE to build an outstanding car to compete because every other pro is using those exact same advantages. Now playing live, that's our race day where we show how well we handle the pressure of the pit with no second chances. But the beauty is, unlike the studio, no one is expecting perfection live. We just need to show that we're not all smoke & mirrors. Even from the pros, we expect to hear a few off notes, tempo fluctuations, etc. Which is why even live albums are almost always doctored. Btw, Tom Scholz of Boston is a big hero of mine. In one of his interviews on youtube he points to a few TALL stacks of cut tape. He says that those are all just the drum edits for the song Don't Look Back. Not the whole album, just one song. He follows that by saying, 'I'll do whatever it takes to get the sound I'm hearing in my head". Bottom line, if editing is cheating then I'd guess around 90% of pro musicians belong in jail. (Even if their producers did the dirty work)
  4. Bravo Tim. I had to give u a like just for using the word "bane". 👏

That's a good idea John. I need to try that. Esp since I tell friends that I nail everything on the first take. I'd hate to get caught in a lie 🙃
  6. Hey guys, I've seen a couple people say that theyre not starting any new projects while waiting on the new Sonar. I'm wondering if they're saying this due to pricing concerns or because they fear problems carrying over their project to the new system. I mainly ask this cause when I downloaded this new EA version, it caused me problems so I had to revert back to an older version. I understand that theyre still working out the kinks but should I be concerned that my current project won't operate correctly with the new Sonar? I'm just trying to figure out if I'm under somewhat of a time crunch(esp since I'm running an older version) or if I have nothing really the worry about as long as I buy the new Sonar. Btw I understand nothing's guaranteed, I'm just reaching out for some educated opinions since I'm still wet behind the ears . Thanks 😉
  7. Cheers Byron. I knew they all had bugs, I was just hoping that a somewhat simpler DAW(well designed of course) might have LESS bugs. Btw, I like Cakewalk's workflow & features but to Noel's point about why not just buy it if u use it alot, After my current project, I don't know if I wanna keep using it a lot. To be honest, I'm kinda down on DAW recording in general right now. Its turned out to be way more problem packed then I ever expected. The constant problem solving is frying my brain. After this project, I def need a long break from it. 🍻
  8. Fair enough. Then out of respect, I will try to sandbag my rage. 😖
  9. I get that for the most part. I guess I am guilty of venting & thinking out loud but I def didn't mean it as a threat. In my defense, I was telling the truth. I 've watched my brother use Studio One with very little headache and he gets great tracks. My friend had Mixcraft for years and he rarely fought with it. I've been having the opposite experience. So yeah, if belly aching's a crime... Lock me up 😉
  10. My biggest issue with Cakewalk has been all the bugs and problems with third party vst's working right. I do understand that developers need to make money but I'm not willing to pay very much for the new Sonar. I'd go maybe $79 but more than that, I'd rather just buy a new DAW. Even if it has less features, as long it's more stable with less problems. With Cakewalk, I'm constantly having to chase down problems and find workarounds. It 's been exhausting.
  11. Thanks Noel. Btw, will the TTS-1 still be part of the new Sonar?
  12. Hi Byron. I'm still pretty green can u please explain what beta entails? Mainly, I just need to know if I can stick with my current version 28.11.0.21 for the next 6 months. Is that correct?
  13. Forgive me Will, I just wanna make sure I follow u completely. The version I have is 28.11.0.21.exe. Are u saying I'm good with this version for the next 6 months?
  14. Hey John, I actually had a problem with the recent update and I had to reinstall the previous version. Do u think this previous version will remain active for a while or will I have to update? Thanks
  15. Thanks mettelus. Well I'm not home to access my computer at moment so I can't answer the error msg question but u may have something with the registry cleaner thing. Thinking back, it may have been something like that. Can a Malwarebytes cleaner clear the registry like that?
  16. Thanks a lot, that's great to know. Btw, for what it's worth guys, I do know there are more realistic piano vst's out there. For instance, I loved the sound of the Monastery Grand by Melda but it was actually TOO realistic for my current project. U know, where some keys are slightly deader than others. I find that works great for heartfelt chords but for certain melodies, u need a more consistent response.
  17. Cheers John. Well, fortunately I did start the project with the TTS-1 piano but I still experience occasional crashes. I also have problems with most third party vst's. They usually click & pop to the point of being unusable. I don't know if the TTS-1 is contributing to this problem, I'm only guessing that it is. Maybe u could tell me, could the TTS-1 be having trouble playing nice with third party vst's? Btw, I've also gotten this message(screenshot below) a few times.
  18. Thanks and yeah, I'll def be doing that soon. I've been procrastinating on bouncing it down because, of course, it's nice to have full midi control. However, it's time for me to make some committed decisions. For my next project however, I do wanna try out the Sound Canvas.
  19. Thanks Dave. Although I'm not quite ready for that just yet, I def want u guys to hear it before I post it anywhere else. Not only am I looking forward to some experienced feedback but without all of ur help here on the Cakewalk forum, I'd have beat my computer with a baseeball bat a long time ago, Office Space style. Seriously, I'm SUPER thankful to u guys. Btw, I wrote this song for my daughter about her best friend who died in a car wreck a year ago. So it's more than a song, it's a very special gift that I know will bring some comfort and healing to my daughter & that family. So yeah, I can't say it enough.. . Thanks so much for the help guys!!! 🙏
  20. Forgive my ignorance guys, Is there a specific branch of Roland I should email to inquire about this?
  21. Hi guys. I love the TTS-1 piano 1 sound but I've come to learn just how problematic the TTS-1 program is. I've downloaded a bunch of free piano vst's to try to replace it but they either sound too grand or too cheap. I know this is a long shot but is it possible to download just that piano sample from somewhere? If I had that piano sample, I could stop using the TTS-1 completely. Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks!
  22. Thanks for the feedback guys. Before I go on, let me just say that I've been playing music seriously for over 40 yrs. I consider myself to have good timing and have recorded many songs in the past. However, since I've started recording again, I think I may be experiencing some degree of what I've learned is called "temporal illusion"(esp when I listen too long without a break). This is my first recording via DAW and the ability to nudge a note ever so slightly has created a sense of timing option anxiety and has me questioning my own sense of where the groove is. Esp since this song has a few tempo changes. (Fwiw, I did use a click where possible) I heard Tom Scholz of Boston talk about working on some songs so long that he lost all perspective. He said he didn't even know what he was listening to anymore. He said only after a couple months break from hearing the track would he gain some true objectivity again. I think it may be time for me to let a couple friends hear this song and get their feedback. I will say, this has been a humbling experience. It's amazing how one slight nudge(tick) of a snare hit will change the way the groove is perceived from that point on. It starts feeling like my perception of where the groove is riding is unreliable and changes on me. So yeah guys, PLEASE tell me if u ever experience this phenomenon. I'd love to know that I'm not a freak. And if u have experienced this, what tips would u give to help me climb out of this OCD rabbit hole? I can't seem to stop fighting with the groove. Thanks a lot!
  23. Hi guys. When I'm seated in front of my monitors, my song's timing & groove sounds great but I notice when I listen from a diff room, the groove sounds off & kinda rushed. Does anyone else experience this? Would it have something to do with diff frequencies reaching the ear at diff times(after bouncing thru the house)? I know it's an unusual question. I couldn't really find anything online about this. My mind wants to believe that I'm getting a better, more objective perspective when listening from a diff room but, with what little I know about freqs, I'm thinking I shouldn't trust my ears when listening that way. I think back to listening to bands play from outside the club. I seem to rem the groove sometimes sounding weird. So, is it just me guys or is this part of the wonderful world of random phase shifting? Please shed some light &/or personal experiences. This one's had me scratching my head for a long time. I'd love to put it to rest. Cheers!
