  3. Cakewalk Sonar is intended as a replacement for CbB. It is based on the same code base CbB and SONAR before it. The product in still in development so the following is all speculation. Cakewalk Sonar will be handled like all the upgrades in the past similar to SONAR to CbB, The file organization and workflow should reflect this. WRT file organization, there will be product specific folders for the program, programdata, content and appdata. During installation there will be an opportunity to migrate settings which I will decline as has been the recommendation for years. Instead, I will take all defaults and modify the new DAW based on my old setup but only after I see how it runs with default settings. Some prefer to migrate settings. Both Cakewalk Sonar and CbB will be available using the same set of "Shared folders" containing the plug-in manager, VST scanner, Pro Channel, DX plug-ins, etc updated for Sonar backward compatible with CbB and older products based on the same code.

  4. I've created a drink to celebrate my plugin deal addiction called American Plugin ***** Ingredients: 1 shot FOMO, 1 shot Buyer's Remorse 1 shot Burbon coat the glass with Angostura bitters (gives it a little zing and a nice red tinge) and serve with a little pink umbrella to remind yourself that mature and mentally sound people probably spend their money on other things. If you're married add 1 shot of Angry Spouse, 3 (and an extra shot of Burbon) if they have any idea how much you actually spend on plugins. Variations - instead of Burbon... British Plugin ***** - use Gin Russian Plugin ***** - use Vodka Mexican Plugin ***** - use Tequila etc.. you get the idea. If you're under 21 there's the Jailbait PS version - use 7up instead of the booze. Be forewarned that this drink is extremely habit forming. Edit: LOL the censoring makes it look nastier than written!

  7. Hey, so many years ago I made the argument that the Bakers should pay more attention to Staff View. My argument was that technology will inevitably change, DAWs will change, but Notation will stay constant. Notation will be the bridge to the next technological advances (plus the fact that millions of children are taught notation all across the world, it's a universal language and a hugely, big(ly) market to tap!) So now it's happening, AI is here. Programing AI voices without notation is possible, but way easier to do with notation. Light years quicker. Good luck to those who don't use it. AI or notation. The thing is you don't have to be able to "read" music per se. You can create in Piano Roll View and input lyrics in Staff View. Then off to AI. That is all

  8. I used to think this but after doing a shootout of all the strumming engines I own (I have a lot) OTS actually came out as one of the top in the realism department. I was pleasantly surprised because based on forum discussions about OTS strumming engine I was under the impression that it wasn't that great. It wasn't until I took the time to really sit down and learn it that I found it to be quite good. I think sometimes certain things on the internet get repeated enough times and without giving it a proper test, we tend to repeat the narrative ourselves (I know I was guilty of that). I would say that it is definitely in my top 3 favorites out of owning AmpleSound, Indiginus, Pettinhouse, 8dio, Ilya Efimov, Waves Factory, Impact Soundworks and Acoustic Samples. I'm not comparing it to strum engines, like NI's Strummed guitar series. That's not a fair comparison but with those programs you're limited to pre-programmed patterns whereas OTS gives you excellent results playing exactly what you want ,which can be good and bad so learn how a guitar player would strum a pattern first or the lack of realism may not be the fault of OTS.

  13. Haha that's not a good thing indeed. I used to work for a large international bank (top 25 in the world) and it was actively encouraged to do courses UNrelated to your work. They even paid for it. In fact, if I had tried to do a course that was only just a bit related to my work, they would deny funding. This could be anything from hobby-related stuff to career-changing education. I currently work for a government department and funnily enough they are a bit stricter. Courses have to be somewhat work related, but on the other hand, the budget is huge. I can spend thousands of euro's each year. And as long as there are some buzzwords in the course description like "communication", "planning" or "streamlining processes", I'm golden.

The savings are so great you will want to buy a lot 😉 And unlike other companies who do group buys (not naming any names) you won't see a significantly better deal a month later causing you to question your life choices, and you won't find everything obsolete in short order and be hounded for upgrades and nickel and dime add-ons every time you use the instruments. But not naming any names, If you Know what i Mean.

The hornet one (not to mention melodyne, crispy tuner , scaler and other products I already own) do a decent job of this.

  25. This is great feedback for a developer and I know that Greg listens closely to his customers. One of the realities of doing customizable strumming like Evolution has is that creating your own patterns is inherently going to be more work than using a loop player like NI Session Guitarist line or UJAM's Virtual Guitarist line. If you commit to spending a good hour watching the videos on using the strum engine and then apply that, in my experience, you'll be blown away at what you can achieve. But, it's never going to be as simple as playing loops, as you're just playing back a recording of someone strumming a pattern, which, of course, restricts a user to exactly what was played. You can't do things like insert a muted strum on the 4th quarter note of a measure like you can do with Evolution. The caveat is, you need to invest the time to learn how the strummer works to do that as opposed to just playing someone else's pre-recorded patterns (loop). So, personally, some of the time I want to start with preset patterns. I want the instant gratification like you get with a loop library-- but without the inherent restrictions of loops (not permitting customization of patterns) that makes using loops a dead end path for anyone like me who wants the ability to make guitar parts their own. Which leads me to agree that I too would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to have more Evolution preset rhythm guitar patterns. I actually think that having a larger number of preset patterns would basically kill any desire to ever turn to a guitar loop player. That is, I own KOMPLETE (the standard version), so I have a few NI Session Guitarist loop players from that and they can be a lot of fun as a place holder -- just no brainer devices where I hold down a chord and the players plays loops of a guitarist playing various patterns for that chord. But you're stuck with the same patterns and while they're super basic, only so many are going to fit your needs and your songs guitar parts will easily be identified as loops from that player library. It's just very limited, like any collection of loops. I want to be able to make patterns -- including presets -- my own and not even being able to tweak patterns ultimately ruins these players for me. Evolution is the closest library/plugin there is for attaining realistic sounding guitar from a keyboard. Consequently, I think the ultimate solution for serious and demanding users of guitar sample libraries would be Evolution expanding its collection of preset rhythm patterns. I think it would make the best virtual guitar solution on the market even better.

  33. Thanks treesha! So the short story for how I use AI to create vocals... I use a program called Synthesizer V, I purchased that and 3 different voices that where programed to work in it. Synth V works much like a DAW and similar to Cakewalk's Piano Roll View. You export your vocal as a .wav file and import it into Cake. After that it's no different than any vocal track you or I might have recorded (except it's clean of noises and in-tune! :) ). The long story...Synthesizer V is a great program, but composing in it can be painful. You draw your notes/melody in Piano Roll View then type in lyrics. Which is all fine and good until you start tweaking and experimenting. Then you have to wait for new audio every stinking time to be generated and becomes time consuming. The easiest, best way is use a notation program to compose, export a midi file, import that into Synth V. Then 80% of your work is done and you need to adjust pronunciations etc. It's kinda funny 'cause I speak with a Chicago accent and try to get the singer to say the words the way I hear them. They seem to have more of a British accent so like the word "Dance" sounds very prim and proper. I have to spell that word "Daaance" to get my Chicago-ism. Even if you don't read music, you should be able to create your melody in Cake's Piano Roll View, then look at it in Staff View and input your Lyrics. Here is where the rub comes. Cakewalk will export lyrics with midi, but the words don't line up correctly all the time. So I end up exporting a XLM file out of Cake and into Sibelius (a notation program and the midi/lyrics work well). I tweak a little more, just things that I know will work better in Synth V. Then export midi out and into Synth V. If you are going to do multiple tracks, say with background vocals, I would highly recommend that you use a notation app to start the process.

  35. I don't know why you're getting poor performance after the latest Windows update, but I suggest you dispense with the VST instruments in a live setting. I think that's just asking for trouble. I would bounce every synth track to audio and archive/hide the MIDI and synth tracks. Moreover, I would bounce all of those tracks to a single stereo track and then archive and hide those tracks. It wouldn't take but a second to load a song then. With over 250 files, that would take a long time to do, I know, but could be done. Hopefully someone can help you with the update slowdown.

  38. If you tell us the style(s) of music you do, I'm certain we'd all have recommendations. I mostly do rock but everything from acoustic rock to hard rock to verging on prog rock and regularly use every Evolution guitar, including the ones with Jazz and Blues in the titles. I'm currently working on redoing an old rock song I wrote and doing leads with Evolution Jazz Archtop and using Guitar Rig to give it a really cool blues rock sound. I'm using Evolution Songwriter for an acoustic guitar and Evolution Vintage Violin Bass for the electric bass. I'm also using Evolution Rock Standard and Evolution Infinity. I used a bunch of Evolution guitars and bass on this short version of an old song of mine and did the slide guitar riff with Slide Acoustic (it's one of those libraries that I'm inspired by every time I load it up). I'm just an old former drummer that also plays keys and never was a singer, so it's nothing impressive, just hobbyist level stuff, but every track was played in live with no midi tricks-- at most, I fixed some mistakes here and there. If I can pull that off, anyone can. The instruments I have in my basic rock template as my starting points are Evolution Rock Standard (Les Paul), Evolution Stratosphere (Strat), Evolution Songwriter (acoustic guitar), Evolution Vintage Violin Bass (its a Hofner like McCartney plays, but I also use the Fender Precision and Jazz - Roundwound and Flatwound -- libraries A LOT too). But those are just my starting points. https://on.soundcloud.com/hMRz9

  40. Yes current version is just fine. Don't use it live in the sense of out at a gig as I never have felt a laptop and interface is the appropriate setup for a guitarist. Windows only. Used for "live" home use and recording one computer into another computer. Have both ToneX software and hardware. Referencing hardware here so I don't have to deal with computer latency problems as ToneX pedal is right at 3ms no matter the setting.

  41. I did a quick check on this, and all of the courses I took from Berklee were actually through Coursera. Often most "Specialization" or "with Certificate" had some fee, but it seeems that the ones which say "Enroll for Free" on the red button of the description page are still free (but didn't enroll to make sure). Seems all of the classes started today (26 June), so worth checking out if interested. Quick edit: the "certificate" part was an option for finishing the course, but didn't affect the course itself (just paid for a certificate if you wanted). Some of the specializations were charged to take the course itself.

  44. It seems you have a faulty keyboard binding registry. Just save your keyboard binding in a file and delete all lines in the file which contains: Kx00530B Then load that keyboard binding file. There is a keyboard binding bug in the Cakewalk for years, I hope developers will fix it in the final CbBversion.

  46. I'm in agreement with some of the others on this: the most realistic way to humanize a MIDI track is to have a human play it. You can slow the tempo way down if you have to. I have even gone so far as to record one chord change at a time. Even if you are a terrible keyboard player, I think you get better results if you go the opposite way of trying to "humanize" a part. Instead, play it in the best you can and then use the tools at your disposal to tighten the performance up. But don't lock everything strictly to the grid. If you are working with an already existing MIDI file, then you are in for a long slog of manual editing. when doing this, you need to be cognizant of how a real musician plays. Probably the most important thing is to put in accents where a player would do that. That all depends on the field and the rhythmic pulse of the material. For example, there is a very famous drummer who has a definite habit of playing the second of every pair of eighth notes on his hi-hat softer. Also, where the musician places his notes in relation to the grid is much of what determines the feel of a part. Playing slightly behind the beat gives a kind of relaxed groove while playing slightly ahead of the beat drives things forward. Understand that "ahead of" and "behind" the beat do not mean out of time. We're talking milliseconds. It is not really heard so much as felt. Stuff like this gets much better results than any so-called "humanize" feature.
