My Last Teaspoon of Honey

Jane Laws

Recommended Posts

For the past year I have been performing quite a few gigs. The response and audience connection to My Last Teaspoon of Honey has encouraged me back into my home studio.

My Last Teaspoon of Honey is another of my simple mixes. I decided to create a music video and I'm excited with the outcome.

Looks forward to hearing what you think.

Left comment and like over at YT. Hope the rest of the community will as well.
Very beautifully done, so tender; much enjoyed Jane.
I was listening on my phone, into my hearing aids, so perhaps that’s why the guitar is so low in the mix. If I was producing, I turn the guitar up. Only crit from me.

Beautiful and heartfelt. The guitar needs to be brought up more as already mentioned.
I was in Australia a couple of years ago, up in the Darwin area and down in Tasmania for nature photography. Had a great time and I really want to go back.

Thanks for the feedback.

I was also thinking the guitar was a little low. I spent quite some time on this issue. When I increased the guitar the bottom end started to sound muddy and boomy, which I just couldn't get under control.

When played back it sounds different on different sound systems, which adds to my confusion.

Also huge thanks DeeringAmps for the YT comment, they really help to promote the video.

Very beautiful song indeed. As others suggested I'd also turn up the guitar a bit. Vocal is great as well but the roomy reverb doesn't go along with the outdoor video. Some nitpicking, overall a great performance and composition.

Hi Jane, welcome to the song forum if this is your first post (I think it is?) . Well you should be excited, your experience singing and songwriting and playing shows. Very lovely all around. If you are just getting back into using your daw, and as you say your songs sound different on different sound systems, it can be confusing but normal I think. There are some vsts that allow you to hear in the daw how things will sound on different sound systems, I think a few free ones, that might help you be less confused about it. For me the main thing seems to be to get the low end heard on something like a phone, which is challenging. What is your area of concern? Lots of good advice here, Treesha

I just wanted a little more guitar to complement the piano but couldn't make it happen. Perhaps the problem began in the guitar recording.

Yes it could be the guitar recording, but with some tweaking of levels in your mixing the guitar and piano levels could be adjusted to a more even balance. And eq as mentioned. I never did well with micing an acoustic guitar and preferred to use a guitar with a pickup vs mic. Now I prefer virtual guitar ha. Just experiment with the mix and eq more to see if you can get the mix how you want it. You could double the guitar track with a different eq on each too. Compression also if the playing is uneven.

The only time I got good results mic'ing an acoustic was using a pair of pencil SDC mics in an XY config (I used some cheap Behringer mics that did a surprisingly good job), but I often just DI for ease. There is a video I used as a reference here that might be of use:

Don't be put off by the beginner in the title - it taught me a few tricks and I've playing guitar over 50 years! 😂

I used a Rode NT2000 positioned in front and directly facing the Body / Neck Junction of the guitar (400mm from guitar).
