mark skinner
Hello , I'm finishing up a song we used to play in my acoustic band. It's a lot harder now being by myself to keep the energy up. I think it's pretty close but , really wondering about the bottom end and the vocal levels. I fought the break with several guitars and cello. I Finally picked up my dusty neglected mandolin and felt better. Thanks for the listen and for any crits or suggestions for improvement.. mark https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=14881195 Edited Saturday at 07:43 PM by mark skinner
T Boog
7 minutes ago, mark skinner said: any crits Very nice Mark. You have a cool, weathered voice and laid back singing style(I assume that's u singing) and I love the overall vibe. I also think the mandolin is perfect. If I were being super critical, maybe a couple of the mandolin fills could use a little more refinement(maybe a little too dissonant or unsure sounding in a couple places). But for the most part the fills are nice. Bravo 😉 Man, "Home is where my horse is" ...what a great frickin line. Props to Lyle on that one👍

Ray T
Really top notch guitar sound, so natural. For my own personal taste I would like your vocals to have a bit more reverb. Either way you have something special, thanks for sharing.
mark skinner
@T Boog , Thanks for the comment. Yep , at my age my voice is pretty weathered , but I do adjust it depending on the song I'm doing. I Really enjoy playing mandolin , but honestly I know hardly "anything" about correctly playing one. The Only time I pick one up is when I'm recording a song that could use one. I'm editing now and will look very closely at what I recorded and look for spots I can improve. Thanx @KSband , I appreciate that , but you know I will have to mess with it for a while .. @Ray T , Thanks for the listen and suggestion. I'm trying out some different things on the reverb. I'm not quite happy with it either. I keep getting a slapback sound when I boost it and don't like that. I think I need a Long predelay with the right reverb. Thank You , a remix and better master is in the works .. mark

That's kinda my approach too. I find what I think are my 4 or 5 weakest fills and try to make them my strongest fills. Btw, after I commented above, I went listen to Lyle's version. I honestly prefer ur version. Lyle has a cool voice but on this song, I find he's too loose with the melodies and the song feels a bit too upbeat and over produced(IMO). Ur version feels more emotional, a little darker & more intense. And the sparse arrangement serves the 'man out in nature' type lyrics better too. I hope u post it again when ur done. I'm a fan 👍 1
