And again, many of the cats listed are on my personal list of favorites because I come from that school. I just don't mistake them for "the greatest guitarists". Yeah + 1 ? Where is Andrés Segovia ? Wait we have a garbled transmission coming in . Apparently his calling plan on the other side of life is an Ouija Board currently in use by all the great classical guitar players that got ghosted by the list ... Greetings and salutations my fellow guitar players ! It is with great anguish , sadness and a heavy heart I come to you to express my personal dissatisfaction on not having made the 250 Greatest Guitarists of all times by Rolling Stone list . The simple truth of the matter is although I have made great strides in Classical Guitar music many of my contributions to the genre of classical guitar have been overshadowed by a few simple facts . Younger people back then seemed to have been intensely motivated by the sexual revolution that had is roots in the mid to late 60's all through out the 70's . Back then if you were a student in Jr High School , you had to be able to play Stairway To Heaven , Smoke on The Water, Jumping Jack Flash and Free-bird , if you couldn't play any of these songs on the guitar correctly you had to bring your mom or your sister to The Prom. To add insult to injury people held a notion of a body image that was impossible even for the musicians of today to maintain once McDonald's and fast food rose in popularity ... Take a good look at me in this picture ! Do you honestly think I could have pulled of spandex and frilly tank tops whilst doing Pete Townshend wind mills on my classical guitar ? Can you Imagine me slinging my guitar so low that even Jimmy Page would be impressed ? Sheesh the one and only time I tried to do a Hendrix I played my guitar with my teeth and they fell out into the guitars sound hole . I was so embarrassed because I had to stop the concert and shake my guitar to smithereens trying to fish my teeth out in front of a sold out house . I should have just lit my guitar on fire like Jimi ! Apparently my "distinguished looks" did not jive well with the " 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time article by Rolling Stone " Kenny Edited October 16, 2023 by kennywtelejazz 1

Rain
Kirk Hammett is the very first person I think of when I thing of awful vibrato and indecisive bends. He gives me tooth aches every time I hear him. Within the confines of the genre, he is one of the worse guitar players I can think of. James Hetfield is a much better lead guitarist (and he certainly is in my top 5 for rhythm guitar). Although that's not saying much. As a member of Metallica, Kirk was a hero of mine, and he seems like a really cool dude. But he sucks. He may an underrated rhythm guitar player though, seeing how he has to follow Hetfield. But even just within that top 50 - Hammett before Vernon Reid? James Burton? Brian May? Zappa? Frusciante? David Gilmour? Kamawn!!!! And where's Alex Lifeson?! craigb
I just compiled the list into one text file for searching. Gee, has anyone else noticed that there's actually 263 guitarists listed in the top 250? ? Yep. No Walter Trout (voted in the top-5 from a huge Europe survey) and no Guthrie Govan either who could easily be another top-5'er. Should Alex Lifeson really be on there? I don't think he did many original pieces, did he? ? I take it they aren't friends of the Blues since, besides Walter, Joe Bonamassa and Gary Moore are also conspicuously missing. Craig Goldy and Jake E. Lee? Nope. Michel St-Père from the Mystery is also a no-show as is Glen Campbell, John Petrucci and Christopher Cross. . . . However, both Neil Young and Joan Jett somehow made the list! (What, no Ace Frehley??? ?) Let's just say that this list is pure troll-bait and leave it at that. I'd much rather listen to Lord Tim and Kenny than most of those listed. Edited October 16, 2023 by craigb
PhonoBrainer
Dang, Kenny, thank you! These click bait list creators are insane. This list should have been published on April 1st. I love Alex Lifeson! But he's not #58 if Mark Knopfler is #96. That's criminally ridiculous. Where is Michael Hedges??? He even drove his car off a Pt Reyes cliff! What does a guitarist have to do??? Carrie Brownstein, meanwhile, is #64, ahead of Knopfler. True, Knopfler never did top-shelf sketch comedy. Now I don't feel so bad about cancelling my Roiling Stoned subscription in 1983.

Shane_B.
Did I miss John 5 on the list. I read it a few times and didn't see him. He is what I would call a great guitar player. He can play any genre of music. I saw an interview with him one time. He said he grew up watching Hee Haw with his dad and thought the Tele was the only guitar there was, or something along those lines. That's why he plays a Tele now. As much as I don't care for his image, I really think he is a one of the greats. I don't see Roy Clark on there either. The man was amazing on guitar. He played everything from classical to rock to jazz to country.
