Try doing some cover songs until inspiration strikes again.

if CbB is open for longer than an hour or so, it crashes for no reason at all,
I must be doing something wrong because I've had it open for about three weeks with zero crashes.

Dropping back in to report that this is working as desired.

Chill out, man. I asked a simple question that just requires a simple answer. I don't think it calls for you acting as if I have cast aspersions upon your ancestry.
I do tempo changes all the time and inserting a new tempo does not change anything that came before it.

I don't have any such issues here. Are you sure you don't have change most recent tempo selected instead of add new ltempo?

There is no reason to keep scanning for plugins every time you launch Cakewalk.

I say music school no, but music most definitely.

Stop using presets and craft your own tones that have the sound you want.
Whoever comes up with those presets uses his guitar and his fingers to get what he thinks sounds right.
So of course, when you play your guitar with your fingers through his preset it's going to sound different.
Besides, the sound you hear on the record is not the same sound that came out of the amp. It's been EQed etc.

Posting your email address in an open forum like that is a monumentally bad idea.

Even better, learn some history too.

SONAR 8.5 is 13 years old. Support for W7 has ended. 32 bit plugins are all but completely obsolete. Past time to move on.

NO ONE I know who uses Cubase, PT, S1, etc. has these kinds of issues as routinely as I have with Cakewalk, nor have I in my time with other programs on this machine
I call BS.
Either that, or you don't know very many people.

Well, if you work for hours without saving, it is your fault.

Yeah. 'Cause no other DAW ever crashes and looses the work of some fool who goes for hours and hours without saving

Relax, man. Nobody is questioning your intelligence.

Gotta be an issue with how you have things routed. Both work just fine here.

You got to be careful with this. Real musicians don't make random variations in either timing or velocity. What they do is purposeful. Not robotically perfect, of course, but deliberate.

That's how it is done: in a text editor. Just change the name.

Apologies if my post was a little terse
Apologies for my snappy reply. There seems to have been a recent spate of people who are not looking for help but just want to unload their bike.
I get being frustrated but it is always a good idea to step back, take a few deep breaths and not let yourself panic.
A cursory search reveals several people using CbB on W11 without issue. Your interface is rather old, FireWire has fallen by the wayside and as mentioned previously it is quite possible that the drivers are no longer compatible.
Me, I am not an early adopter. I'll let others do the beta testing for new OS releases.

So my question is - can anything be done to remedy this ? Kontakt is pretty popular so it's not exactly a niche instrument that hardly anyone uses
You'd really have to ask Native Instruments. Its their fault for not adhering to the MIDI specification, not Cakewalk's for working properly.

Cakewalk does not see my sound card
Yes it does. That's what you have selected.

No. You should be using the ASIO driver for your interface.
Here's a dumb question: did you install the W10 drivers?
Another dumb question: what happens if you select the L input?

There's no screen reader software for W10? I have a hard time believing that.
