  1. Avant garde Asian Mozart goes to the circus. That was a good listen! It held my interest all the way to the end. It was fun trying to hear the little stuff underneath the big stuff - nice job there! FWIW you might consider dropping the shaker volume just a bit in the first section. And throughout, the transient attack on the kick drum beater is throwing off a percussive hit artifact that sounds a bit too much like a digital clip. If that makes any sense? Not really a problem, just an observation. The steel drum sample is great and well used! What did you use for that? cheers, -Tom
  2. Perhaps it's a Southern California thing. Precursor to Joe Exotic? Worthington Ford, but also Worthington Chrysler/Dodge Tell'em, Cal!
  3. @Paul Bush - thanks, I'm wondering if you mean you actually jogged? In which case, sorry it was 5:50. Thanks for the comment! @bjornpdx - you know that "too many ne-ne-ne" thought occurred to me as well! Thanks for the confirmation! @garybrun - good observation, there is a lot going on in the lower mids. And whenever I put it on my good monitors, it sounds acceptly good! But when I move to headphones, it sounds like *****. So I try to add more to an already full 300hz so I can get bass in the headphones, and it turns the listen on the good monitors to mud. Something has gotta give! Thanks for the comments! @90 dB - many thanks for the listen, glad you liked it!
  4. I really like the arrangement and your vocal is always very well performed and presented. Some voices just have more "listenability" thank others, and yours has it by the truckload. I'd say for a crit, you might solo just the hi hat, snare and the rhythm guitar together, and see if you hear any slight timing discrepancies? Your rhythm g is maybe played just a bit more straight-time than the drums are shuffling - I don't know, might be worth a check. I know I couldn't tell unless I soloed it. It's a catchy melody and the song overall has a "classic" feel to it. cheers, -Tom
  5. Playing naked, and they think you're an elephant?
  6. Could you get 50% off of 50% for Sew What?
  7. @Wookiee - thanks! I will check those times and see about panning or some overuse of effects. The initial old-timey 16 seconds is intentional, and kind of figures in to a video idea that might be coming . . . thanks for the notes! @Douglas Kirby - so glad you dug the groove in this, thanks! There are a few spots where I think it's worthy of the "electrojazz" genre name! thanks forthe comment . .. @SupaReels Music - thanks! The title is kind of clickbaity, especially for our forum crowd perhaps? @mark skinner - many thanks for the kind comment! I think the bass is a tangle, because it's three different basses in three sections and I'm trying to get them mixed so earbuds can still hear some bass, without filling the lower mids with bass that robs the upper stuff . . . the violin is my first go at such a thing. I wanted more "fiddle" and less "concert violin", so I bit the bullet and bought Virharmonic's Bohemian Violin. The demo of course make it sound like playing in a beautifully phrased passage is a doddle. The truth is, you have to massage the midi with keyswitches. But I do like the sound, and I'll get better at it. I don't think what I have is perfect . . . and it's the result of hours and hours of violin midi editing, plus doubled a bit with EastWest "Gypsy" mixed fairly low. @Bajan Blue - awesome that you liked it, thanks! I think it still needs some mix work and hopefully some clarity . . .
  8. Hello again! I can't figure out if this mix is tilted towards the bass, away from the bass, or both! ??? I can't see the forest OR the trees . . . can someone point me in the right direction? many thanks for the time and the listens, any comments are welcomed! -Tom
  9. Love it. Love the vocals, so very clear! Good pickin', too! If it t'were my mix I'd want that washtub bass up. cheers, -Tom

Welcome to the forum, and nice tune! The tones you chose were potentially relaxing, but tis is not a piece to relax to. Something urgent is going on somewhere!!! think the greatest bang-for-the-buck improvement could be in the drums - they sound decent but the pattern is fairly static throughout the piece. More dynamic drum moments? a breakdown section? I dunno, personal taste on that one. again, welcome to the forum, looking forward to hearing more of your work! cheers, -Tom
  11. I love mix issues!! But first, cool chord progression and the thing does have a vibe. I loved the outtro fade part! Maybe two questions? 1) what are you using for the bass - it sounds like a bass synth drone of some type? I can't pick out a bass guitar. The always-present bass note is sucking mix headroom away from the sparkly bits like guitars and those upper strings and the cymbals. 2) The drums are sounding over reverbed, like they are in the very back of a large room. You might try an experiment where you cut the room size of the reverb in half. And add some predelay. Any better? You will get some good advice 'round these parts! But you are starting with something worth polishing . . . cheers, -Tom
  12. Way to work the heat pump into your DJ set!
  13. If it's a big download, you can just unzip it.
  14. A really interesting song, the title works great! Nice little twist there. I found myself focusing mix wise on the bass - I thought it was great when the bass had sustains going, but the every so often the bass note clips the sustain off (does that make sense?) and I think that breaks the groove a little bit. For me the groove is pretty strong with your song and everything else keeps the toes tappin' ! cheers, -Tom
  15. Really like the mix, the vocals, and the fact that the video is a multi-cultural time-shifting smoothie! cheers, -Tom
  16. Cool groove for sure, and the swampyness is cool! You are either fighting a little 60hz cycle buzz or using it as an effect, I can't tell? The drums could stand out a bit more in the mix, they are pretty far back there . . . you might make them a little louder when the vocals aren't present . . . nice one! cheers, -Tom
  17. Mixes are like elbows. Stuff sticks out sometimes, other times it's tucked in. Cool tune, kinda noir-ish in a way. I'd say the guitar is fine - just lower the bass and the piano! When you get that crushed compression on the vocals, in spots it's a bit too cooked for my taste, but usually it works great - that's a great vocal performance by the way. c heers, -Tom
  18. I don't know what I appreciated most - your "tools used" breakdown, the choice of this excellent song, your awesomely faithful-to-the-original mix, the freshness of your update . . .or the fact that it was 1982 for a brief moment in my studio . . . awesome on all of it! cheers, -Tom p.s. let me know when you get around to "Airhead" or "Budapest by Blimp" . . .
  19. Same as it . . . ever . . . was.
