  1. Still are but they aren't as powerful. Now we have evil spotify and others taking all the money
  2. Along Comes Mary — Association We opened for them in concert when "Cherish" was #1 on Billboard. Great vocals, adequate instrumentals. Nice people. A few years later, we opened for them in a big Holiday Inn show-club. Different members, vocals not quite as good, better musicians though. The record company owned the name, part of their sign-up contract, and could hire, fire members and run more than one band on tour with the same name. The labels were evil back then.
  3. They sent me to the wrong school when I was an adolescent
  4. In this part of the world, Porgy is a type of fish. Nina wasn't the original artist, but I'm curious to see how she treated it, so I'll listen after I post. I Love You Porgy — Nina Simone
  5. The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus) — Yes
  6. That shows you how the H-O-F is simply not a true measure of talent or influence. But any time an industry awards itself, it's not valid. I have much admiration for Ms. Kaye. One of the instruments I play is bass, and I have learned a number of her licks.
  7. Friday's On My Mind — Easybeats
  8. I wasn't going to mention any names.
  9. Video killed the radio star. As much as I love the videos, the pictures became more important than the music, which lead to some very sexy people who can't sing becoming superstars. So it had its good and bad side. Some ugly people can make great music, too.
  10. Hard to say, since there are so many genres. Beethoven symphonies #4 and #7 by the Cleveland Orchestra, George Szell conducting. I can't find this one on YouTube, but it's my two favorite Beetoven Symphonies and a great interpretation. OR.. When I was a young student, playing in the beginning band, and not very wise about jazz yet, I walked into a record store and asked for a saxophone record. The owner suggested Focus, by Stan Getz. I wore out 3 LPs, and have it on CD. It was over my head then, but as I grew, so did my appreciation. The entire sax performance is an improvisation over the orchestrated background. How about a Gino Vanelli LP with a little symphony in the middle? or: Breakfast In America - Supertramp Time Out - Dave Brubeck Quartet Yes anyone? Aqualung - Jethro Tull I like this one better than Aja Manhattan Transfer - Extensions I could go on and on
  11. When I visited Australia, they called a collection of anything a mob. A mob of kangaroos, a mob of birds, and thus, a mob of elephants.
