Changing the buffer and/or sample rate had no affect on the issue. But if I had created a new project it would have - see below. Thankfully this was just a test project with one audio track...I've been working with Jason from IKM on this and after trying a variety of things he suggested

What’s odd is my test track should have been 44.1 - 24 bit when it was created but apparently was not, if I try to paste a track from my ‘problem’ project I get message that the sample rates don’t match.
The previous Cakewalk update nuked my working default settings – thought I had reset everything; or maybe I missed something but caught it after I created my test track but by then the damage was already done and I was in the rabbit hole...

Did some more testing...
- Verified that my CPU usage doesn't exceed 20% during these tests.
- Tried same thing (procesing same audio track with same plugin) in latest version of Image Line - works fine there.
- Switched interface to my old Quad Capture - same issue with Cakewalk
- Same problem with either VST or VST3 versions (removed VST3 versions from system to bee sure they weren't being swapped).
- Tried disabling / enabling 64 bit processing, 2x over sampling, plugin load balancing, etc. and no change.
Maybe something running on my system is causing the issue with Cakewalk when using IK Multimedia plugins, if so I still haven't figured it out.

Don't think it's AXE I/O, I've been having issues (not the same but still odd) with IKM plugs in Cakewalk (posted about it in thread linked below) that I don't have in either Studio One or Image Line.
I tried switching back to my Quad Capture and still had same issue. -

I have FOBASS (fear of buying another shelf sitter).
No offense to Skippy, I like his stuff and have a number of his libraries. I really hope this works out great for him and everyone who buys into it.
I'm just not sure it's for me. I'm hearing some great sounds but if I'm honest with myself I know that I don't build songs with this kind of stuff, it's just not my style; no offense meant if it's yours.
I'll probably rewatch the videos and maybe at some point either get convinced or get infected with enough FOMO toxens that I succumb...Peace out...

and if all goes well you can keep the backup and later if need you it then buy a licensed version or wait till they have a sale.
Note that there are other good backup programs and some decent free ones - I've just been using Acronis for years and have been happy with it.**a quick google search came up with 4 deals on 2.5" 2TB drives.
Granted they're bare drives, but that's really all you need.
The reason I mentioned 2.5" drives is that all you need to run one (connect it to your PC for use) is an adapter cable (and assuming that your USB ports are up to spec - no power supply or power cable needed).
You can get SATA to USB cables dirt cheap.

Looks like it's similar to Blue Cat's PatchWork but with patches that require other 3rd party plugins, like Omnisphere, Syrum, etc.
Not saying that's bad but he's kind of ***** footing on the requirements.

Wondering if anyone else is running into this or if I've been blessed with this particular headache.
I've been having issues with IK Multimedia plugs in Cakewalk, not all but selected plugs or selected presets when using certain plugins.
Note that this is not an issue with the latest Cakewalk build - I've reinstalled previous builds (2511, 25.09, etc.) and verified same issue.Originally I thought is was because of high CPU usage but that doesn't appear to be the critical factor.
For example using
AmpliTube 4 with the Brian May collection - half the patches won't play (Brighton Rock - Live Killers, Death on Two Legs, Fat Bottomed Girls Rhythm, Flash, etc.)
- even if there is only one track in the project with the only FX loaded being AmpliTube 4
- regardless of sample size or sample rate
and same thing with Tape collection, for example the 440.
However with Studio One 4 - no problem, I can have both of the above plugins loaded on same track and no drop outs

Everything carries a risk, even do nothing...
Windows 10 is currently free, but it may not stay this way - so take advantage of it.
As previously said make a backup - but do a proper, the I can do a total restoration from scratch type backup.
Then upgrade your system
- if all is well, great. Now you can obsess about something else & spend your change on plugins or sample libraries or whatever.
- if your system bricks, not likely but shit happens, then use your backup to revive your now verified as obsolete hardware. At least you'll know that the day when you have to pony up for a new system is going to be sooner than you hoped.If the upgrade is a success you might even find your system runs better under Windows 10, many people do.

Not trying to be snarky but manpower = money. For a free program, QA staffing is going to be limited so they depend on 'early access' testing to catch bugs they missed. The more people participating, the fewer bugs appear in the release.

V4.31 (2019/12/20)- MIDI Program Change preference is now saved into session instead of global preferences, so each instance can now use different MIDI channels. It is also saved in the user default preset.
- VST3: added program change support for VST3 plug-in format.
- Mac: much faster GUI rendering on recent Mac OS systems.
- Mac: fixed user interface not properly shown on retina displays in some applications built with the 10.14 Mac OS SDK (Cubase 10.5 for example).
- Mac: fixed settings panel rendering issues in dark mode on Mac OS Mojave and newer.
- VST: the user interface is now properly resized in Cubase on Windows when loading skins.
- Dropped support for legacy RTAS plug-in format.

I don't know...
I thought it was 44.1k/24bit but don't think it is.
I spent a half hour trying various combos but I am unable to recreate the issue with a new project - which I guess is a good thing.
The bad project is still bad, so it wasn't my imagination. I created that project between the current Cakewalk update and the previous but that may not mean anything. I'm just going to write this off as a fluke and move on.
