MIDI 2.0 Specs Now Available for Download

    Hi ,

    – Complete specifications for the much-anticipated update to MIDI 1.0 are now available to the public –

MIDI 2.0 enhances virtually all aspects of the original MIDI 1.0 spec, which revolutionized the world of technology and the arts when it was introduced in 1983. Unlike the original spec, which consisted of a transmitter talking to a receiver, the new specification now enables two-way communication between MIDI devices. This allows for features like automatic setup, based on one device querying another, obtaining a response, and configuring itself. This also ensures backward compatibility. If a MIDI 2.0 device can’t carry on a two-way conversation, it recognizes that it’s talking to a MIDI 1.0 device, and adjusts its communications accordingly.

Aside from improving ease of use and workflow, MIDI 2.0 delivers more nuanced expressiveness for electronic instruments. It’s now possible to convey the same kind of subtle expression normally associated with acoustic instruments, thanks to higher-resolution dynamics and control data, vastly extended controller options (including per-note controllers for exceptional articulation), and simplified controller assignments.

The complete set of five core MIDI 2.0 specifications, as ratified at the MMA (MIDI Manufacturers Association) meeting during the Winter NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) convention in Anaheim, California, is now available for download to developers and the general public. To obtain the set of specifications, simply join The MIDI Association, the global community of people who work, play, and create with MIDI.

Anyone can sign up for a no-obligation, free membership at https://www.midi.org/midi-signup.

Companies that would like to become MMA members to access the MMA’s software and tools for MIDI 2.0 development can now apply online here.

With over 23,000 members in 113 countries, TMA and its associated website have become the epicenter for everything relating to MIDI, including news, applications, articles and tutorials, downloads of the MIDI specification, discussion forums, and more.

Gene Joly, the MMA’s current President, states "We are happy to provide access to the complete MIDI 2.0 specifications to everyone, and believe MIDI 2.0 will unleash a level of innovation in music and the arts we haven’t seen since MIDI 1.0 changed the world. All of us are excited about what MIDI 2.0 will bring to music and the arts."

The following specifications are now available.

    M2-100-U v1.0 MIDI 2.0 Specification Overview
    M2-101-UM v1.1 MIDI-CI Specification
    M2-102-U v1.0 Common Rules for MIDI-CI Profiles

All people that enters for a FREE account: https://www.hifimidi.com/offers/onXZ5564/checkout

Are going to get a chance to win 1 of 3 AMH Licenses. If you choose to enter as a paying member, you also get the same chances.

So nothing on the website (rules, deadlines, how winners are notified, legal notifications, etc.), no info on the email you get when signing up.  I'm not saying that the giveaway isn't legit just that as things currently stand it doesn't inspire confidence.
Also what you're saying doesn't match what the video says.

    GIVEAWAY ALERT!

Want to dig deeper within our NEW Ample Guitar Hellrazer and also get a chance to WIN your own copy? Ruben has all the answers for you HERE:

Followed directions, went to Ruben's web site HiFi Midi. Only way you can access anything is to create a login, did that.
No mention Ample Guitar Hellrazer, or code word he mentions in video anywhere on his site.  The video isn't even on  HiFi Midi.
    Complete waste of my time.

  5. While we're on installation issues - IKM could also make life easier for customers by remembering (storing & recalling) the previous install locations.
It's a really easy thing to do, at least for Windows installers, just write the selected VST, VST3 and AAX install locations in the registry.

Hopefully I'm coming not off rude.  I'm really liking what IKM has been coming out with, just think that the installers could use some TLC.

All plugins are installed (and was based on user feedback) in order to allow easiest demoing and offline authorization.

Why not have this optional?  I.E. check box to toggle all or just previously installed modules?
I personally only want what I own/purchased to be installed and have to manually delete the unlicensed.

  7. I picked this up and it's a lot a fun with a ton of presets.  This plugin has a lot of depth to it.  Haven't played with enough to know if it'll end up as one of my favorites but that I'm not bored with it after spending over a half hour spelunking presets is promising.

Looks like video was made with an earlier version of the plugin as the current version has some added features - the Feedback tab is now the FDBK/DYN tab with Input Gate and Ducker controls.

My main critique (minor) is that it lacks an input gain control - some of the presets overload when feed a hot signal.
Yes you can work around that by twiddling effect gain levels & dry output but if you've already saved your perfect settings you're now altering the recipe.
But like I previously mentioned this is minor as you can handle this by dropping in something like one of BlueCat's freebie Gain plugins
    https://www.bluecataudio.com/Products/Product_GainSuite/  before Relayer.

I had the H3000 Factory Native plugin and although had a huge amount of presets/features, I couldn't find much use for it and ended up selling it. I agree with Scook that it was 'ok', but wasn't something that 'wow'd' me.....YMMV.

Same experience.  Tried using it several times but always ended up pulling it.

Thinking of getting Blakhole, but wanted to know your thoughts on it. I'll be mostly using it for guitar (my goto is Breverb Cake version).  Is Blackhole more of a sound design  tool?

Hey Mesh - I would definitely give it a try.  There's been a couple of times when a track has been too dry (in context of a mix) but I couldn't find the right verb or delay that worked and then found that blackhole ended up giving it the right character.  It's rarely the first verb I go for but sometimes it's the one I'm happy with.

  11. I'm thinking that they probably had to disable the MIDI Learn in order to get Catalina version working (probably same core code deployed to different platforms) so they could ship in time for VD.
If that's the case they'll hopefully come up with another update in short term to restore it.
