Head in a Basket - Constructive mix feedback welcome!
Grem replied to Myriad Rocker's topic in Songs
I would call that a wrap! Let others hear it and see what they think. I listened to it over the work speakers (JVC) and my Bose headphones, both loud and at low volumes with rests in between. This one has the dynamic sound that the first one did, with more punch and low end, but I can also hear all the little details. I think I can even make out the bass player. (Is he a former guitar player?) The little part I was talking about was I think you took the very first part of the first word of the second verse and gave it a little Ba, Ba, Ba, Ba in time with the beat. Sounds good. I like that part. -

As Rush put it "Living in the Limelight, the Universal Dream" ! : ) Maybe that's why it sounds so good, ya'll are really relaxed and not trying to prove nothing to nobody. : ) For me I love mixing. I mean I could do this everyday all day long, into the night, never go to bed..... but that ain't real!! I gotta make a living, SO I have to work. : ( I still try to mix, and I ain't half bad. But for me it's so hard to say "Yes, this is finished!" I always am listening, thinking how can I get this part to sound like this, or that. I am always hearing some little thing wrong with it. The bad thing is when I go back and listen to it after some time has past I'm like, what was I hearing? That sounds good. So I listen again and next thing I know, I got it back in the box trying to fix that little something that I am the only one hearing!!! So I haven't been able to find that balance. Or to let it go!! Keep it up though, your doing a great job. Just gotta let that bass guitar stand out some more. : ) -

Downshifter - Mixing & Mastering Constructive Feedback?

Only if you don't give up and keep seeking advice. Playing that style of music, I don't think 'giving up' is in your vocabulary! : ) LOL The kick is fine I thought. I gave it somewhat of a listen on my Surface Pro speakers (I mean BS speakers!!) and I could still 'hear' the kick but not on a regular basis. -
He gave a picture of it in a post above, but I don't recognize it, other than it looking like an early Fender style. Maybe a Jaguar? I was thinking a Jazzmaster but I don't think it has enough buttons for that!

as I was listening, and looking at the drawing, I thought it fit very well. It allowed me to get lost looking at the drawing while enjoying the experience of it all together. Reading about ol Larry (RIP) I was surprised at what he did. I never got into D&D until my son came along. He and his group would spend hours playing. Then they got me into Magic, The Gathering and I was always enjoyed looking at the art. My song had me buy him so many D&D books, and the art was always outstanding. And ol Larry was one of the guys that set the pace/standard. Interesting. Good song Wookiee. I like that kind of stuff.

Downshifter - Mixing & Mastering Constructive Feedback?
Grem replied to Myriad Rocker's topic in Songs
Alright Myriad, The first thing I was listening for here was the bass player. I did hear it in this song, but not like I should. The bass is getting buried in the mix. I can hear it in spots, but the bass gets buried a lot. Even in the spot where the bass is the highlight, it's not as up-front as it should be. Can I ask if your a guitar player> ( I am) What a f'n scream man!! At 3:19 that was really good! Lot of feelings there. Mix aside, another great song. Well done, thought out, and executed. Another winner. -

OK. I want to revise my opinion!! : ) Mix 1: It does have low end punch when I listened on my Bose headphones. If fact, I would say that's the best 'overall mix' of the three. If this one was mastered better it may be the one. Mix 2: Not a bad mix, but I can hear that there's more compression on this mix (or in the mastering stage?). But if you could get the compression backed off a but, this one might be a winner too. I liked the lower level stuff I can hear in this mix that wasn't as obvious as the last mix. In this mix, the part that Chuck was saying was digital clipping I am clearly hearing it is intended fx. In fact, if you gonna put it in, make it stand out more. And there is a little part right after that (sounds like a record scratch?) that's in time with the beats and that sounds good, but it's not as obvious in the first mix. Mix 3: This really wasn't as bad a mix as I thought. But I did drop the volume down a couple of notches in the beginning, towards the middle too. That tells me the EQ ain't right. Which is a mastering thing. I would say that your first mix may be the best shot to give to someone to master. Also what I noticed yesterday and today (on two different listening eviroments) I can't make out what the bass player is doing. And I listened for it too. He must be following the guitars lick for lick. But I still should be able to hear the bass. Can I ask if you remixed these three trks? Or did you just give different masters? -

I heard this too and it was in each mix. So I assumed it was that digital scratch stuff that is added in for fx. But I could be wrong!! I meant to ask about it. And to further add to my comments to my last post above, The first mix does lack some low end punch. However, it is the most dynamic sounding of the three. IWO, there is less compression and it plays more pleasing (if that description helps at all!! LOL) I am fixing to listen again on my headphones. Myriad, to be totally honest here, if I was your manager or someone in the band with some pull/influence, I'd be telling ya'll to seek some professional mix/mastering services for this. I believe that song is that good. I wanted to send this to you in a PM but you don't have that option available. -

Ok, here ya go: Mix 1 is the most dynamic out of the three. I could listen to it over and over and not get tired of it. It does however lack the low end that I am use to hearing out of this genre. Mix 2 is better as far as the lowend goes. But not the lowest end. MAy need a little more. Mix 3 is too loud. But it has the best sound out of them all. That maybe the winner! Will give a better listen when I get home on my studio speakers. -
Yep. They are already ahead of the pack as far as future features. Just get it rock solid and Bammm!!!

Did that tool work? Did you find out where the Watermark came from?
-
I don't know if you noticed Lee, but I was thinking that the new 'Look' was a bright green color. I am thinking I'm wrong in this, according to what the others have posted and what I see on Melda page. But I am correct in that they have changed it and you will like it!! : ) JK
-
No... don't want to do that!! ?
-
I believe you are correct. I can also say that when I saw the list of new features for SO4 I was like, CW has had all of that for years! CW was the first to have lots of features that other DAWs are just now getting around to adding.
-
A interleaved file is easier on the processing power than an equivalent stereo file made up of two mono trks. So I think that's why CW uses interleaved files. It's also a very common file type associated with Windows OS. Not sure if iOS uses interleaved file or not. But some plugins are developed (I must add I am purely speculating on this) with Pro Tools in mind, which at one time did not work with interleaved files. Not sure if that's still the case.
-
Sounds like an invitation!!!
-
What I was looking at was a bright green color that I thought was the default. Let me make sure I am getting this right. Will be back!! Will have to wait till I get home tonight to update and check it out. But on the home page all the plugins are that same color your showing Marc. If it's that color, I got no beef. But if it's that bright ***** green color I was looking at, (and I can't find it again!) IDK 'bout that! It was a fuglycolor!! I really like Melda plugins! I was thinking " No fella's not that color as your default!!" : )

Nice song you got there Gary. Agree with Steve on the mix. Could use another go at it to bring things out more clearly. All instruments sound good, and like Steve said, the squeeze box sounds good. Like it will be one of the highlights of the song if you can get it to stand out a little more without overpowering the strumming guitar, which has a good tone to it. Maybe add a little more mid-highs to it? IDK, just thinking what I would reach for if I was sitting at the desk!
-
@msmcleod Yeah I am going to get use to it too, eventually!! @Piotr How did you get the dark look? What skin is that? Carbonite? (That's the one I use. ) How well does it work? I am thinking and hoping I can use the Carbonite skin and not fiddle around with the knobs and sliders and I maybe ok.
-
Has anyone went with the new '13' update? They have a new 'Look' and am wondering how everyone is liking it? It seems they have decided to use /Sliders, Buttons, and knobs all together in the new 'Look'. With that bright color scheme that everyone seems to be moving to. And only some of the alternate skins work with it. They are saying that the skins that don't work ain't high on the priority list of things that will get fixed. To me this means "You will take it and like it!" From the Melda 13 Release Notes page: There's a new style (Neon), which is enforced as default style and everything is designed to work well with this style "out of the box". This includes everything from basic components to various graphs and analyzers. Previous style settings are ignored now. If you feel the need to get your style settings back, it is not recommended, but you can hack the engine by going to the user settings folder (where the presets are) and copy StyleSettingsV11.cfg to StyleSettingsV13.cfg in proper folders. Note that other styles may not work that well compared to Neon. While we are going to slowly improve other styles as well, it has a low priority. Neon is the new "look" of Melda plugins.

Thanks for the response Kenny. I am going to make an assumption that the pick is on the small side, not a large pick, am I correct? And I am not familiar with that guitar. Looks Fenderish.

@Myriad Rocker type the "at" symbol and type a person's forum name and it will send a notification to them. Will give a listen later on. -
First thought was Wow! Great mixing and mastering on this. Sound hit me in the face right off the bat. : ) The only thing I heard was at the end when the other voices came in with the lead vocal, they all kind of got lost. Couldn't understand what was being said. Not as clear as the main vocal was. All in all a great effort. Excellent mix and EQ'ing!! Or would that be called..... Mastering!
