Presonus Audiobox is $100.00 and has worked for my friend. Behringer has a few but I would start at the IMC202HD. Arturia has a new line of Audio Interfaces out that start at $100.00 and up I would take a look at.

For a $100-$150 I can recommend a few but not for $50.

Does your son have a good ear? If he does I think it is possible but he will have to practice 2-3 hours every day for the next 16 months. But he will never know if he doesn't give it try. If he doesn't make it he will be very close I bet and could enter undeclared if a university and try the next year or attend community college and keep working on the list and reapply after 2 years. The church music director at my old church did that. Not that he wasn't good but money was really tight so he went to community college first and transfer over to 4 year college with a scholarship he earned.

Upping the ASIO interface to what buffer setting? When I upped mine quite a few years ago to 2048 buffer setting I had some problems too. When I froze some tracks and put the buffer to 1024 I was okay. So sometimes having a big ASIO buffer can cause issues to IMHO.

Cakewalk has always been capable but even I have to admit that it had some stability issues that with Bandlab has been really worked on. Anyone looking into a Windows-based DAW should give it a whirl.

Now this I can understand having ruptured two discs in my back 14 years ago. Anyway I'm glad you're getting the lady fired/tuned up Dave. My future will most likely be a hybrid like the Kawai NV10s or a Yamaha N1X or should I say what ever they replace them with in a few years. Having both of my children in college next year has put a damper on my spending.
