Wanted to share this cover I just finished with the group, as I'm really happy with how it came out! I have fun trying to recreate some of my favorite classic tunes from years past in my modest home studio. I feel like it's a great exercise in refining recording and mixing skills and techniques as well. This one was a definite challenge, as I'm sure you can imagine! All done in CbB (as always), with a combination of VST and hardware synths (done completely from keyboard). The heavy hitters instrumentally were Omnisphere and Kontakt (VST), and my Korg Kronos (hardware), with some supporting help from Arturia Analog Lab and Addictive Drums. My interface is a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4, and my vocal mic on this was a simple AT2020 (with the AIR setting activated on the 4i4). Another real highlight is a FABULOUS female duet part laid down by my friend and long time singing partner Tone Hjelt from Oslo, Norway. I posted a mixdown on Bandlab, and she added her part there. I then brought it back to CbB to final mix and master. Everything is newly recorded from scratch except some beginning sounds (for authenticity), and a few choice Gilmour guitar licks in last verse. Anyway, have a listen, feedback is welcome. Hope you enjoy!

Mic recommendations, everyone's favorite topic, lol... ?
If you already like the Warm Audio stuff, why not look into the WA47 Jr FET? A truly outstanding mic by any standard, and it $300 it just can't be beat! I have one, and I use it frequently for vocals, in addition to another tube condenser mic I own (not the WA47 tube, though I have used one before). Very smooth and balanced across the whole spectrum... robust lows, balanced mids, smooth/detailed/non-harsh highs. Definitely distinct character from the WA47 tube unit you have, yet shines with the authentic K-47 style capsule.

What option do you have selected in Preferences for your project recording? Try setting to Sound on Sound. If it's on Comping, then when you record on top of the track you won't hear anything.

I must have slept through the late 80’s, totally missed this one.
That being said, this was great!I fear that the general attitude on the forum is that BandLab is a joke and we are “above” that. We’ll, thanks for dispelling that notion! Great collaboration, simply amazing.

Ross , I sure enjoyed that wonderful collaboration. The vocals were powerful and excellently done! This sounds like one that would be hard to pull off without being Totally comitted. I've not heard the original and don't think I need to ..
Enjoyed it .. mark

Thanks Jack from all, appreciate you taking the time to listen!! They were definitely a hot and talented band, not just an average boy band, like some tried to pass them off as!

I have really been enjoying collaborating lately on remakes of some classic cover tunes. This is the latest offering with some friends over on Bandlab. Bass maestro Fabian Bono asked me to sing vocals on this fun and funky late 80's tune by the group Curiosity Killed The Cat. I didn't know it at all, and it was definitely outside of my usual wheelhouse as far as style and genre goes. Anyway, I dove in with both feet, and really ended up having a blast stretching out of my comfort zone! I also ended up doing the brass/horns as well, and was actually quite happy with the way they came out. As before with this setup, I did my tracks in Cakewalk, they did theirs variously and posted them on BandLab. I then brought them into CW to mix and master. Truly international cast on this: Fabian on bass (Argentina), Susan on drums (Australia), Mario on guitar (Italy), Mikey on keys/organ (UK), and Angie on BGV's (US). Enjoy!

Breathe (Pink Floyd Cover)- Duet with Tone Hjelt
in Songs
Posted
Hey Mark, thanks so much for the listen and feedback! Funny you pinpointed the vocals, because it was a point of significant deliberation when mixing. Tone has such a cool and stylish quality to her vocals, I really wanted her to be heard. I ended up approaching it more like a duet than her just singing back up. Also, I thought it might subtly distinguish it from the original. Anyway, great observation and comment Mark, thanks again!
