Interesting, I don't understand the Pro Tools and Avid being separate, they should be the same? since Pro Tools is owned by Avid. Avid don't run any other DAW as far as I know.

These figures are pretty much what I would expect, almost uncannily backs up my argument, EM crew going ballistic, followed by Musicians/Songwriters, followed by Engineers. Definitely would be worth chasing up to find if there is any difference now with CbB. I am not on Facebook so cannot do.

I believe this has changed some since this info was collected. In addition, How many DAWS have reinvented their name so often? I think this has served to fork off some of the feeds on social media meaning we aren't seeing all Cakewalk users. Meng was wise to keep "Cakewalk" since this is probably the most common denominator between the different itinerations of the program. Since I've been using the software we've had different versions of Pro i.e. Pro 8, pro 9 etc. Then we went to  Sonar  and  the "X" designations. After that Gibson came up with "Platinum". Changing things up this often means search engines don't necessarily give an accurate history of the program popularity in numbers.

  2. That would be great. I haven't purchased Komplete Kontrol yet. I was waiting to make sure NI was going to support it over the long haul. It appears they will. I'm adding on a studio to my house. It's a slow process. All of that has to happen first.

One dastardly marketing move would be to offer the full version of SO4 pro to buyers of their hardware. Buy a Faderport and get the full version along with it, or buy a full version and get two years updates free. They could do something like that. Most DAWs tied into hardware are only the basic versions.

If one waits for the periodic sales it isn't much more $ to go the full version. Most companies will offer incentive buys to get you on board if you own their lower versions. I've mostly been the type to buy the full version lest I find myself wanting something in the DAW I don't have. Cakewalks offerings have been fairly complete though and I think I could have made most of my mixes using them. Now it's a no brainer with CbB. Just download it and give yourself time to learn it.

I'm not chomping at the bit to find out what Presonus is up to. They had a kind relationship with some Cake crew.  I mostly gathered that from"reading between the lines" from several sources. They might know already. I used SO4 for a recent album master and assembly. Hard to beat for that. Until then I hadn't picked it up in a long time.

  3. @msmcleod  I fell off the wagon on this. I guess I need to climb back on again. I realize prog rock can go on and on and on and on........ even so, most of the prog rock I've done has been less that 6 minutes. Might have taken me 5 days or more to play/mix it though.

@florinko I think the workflow needs to be somehow agreed on before the Bandlab stems happen. In my thinking this is a rough draft to determine a more serious direction probably through Dropbox , Google drive of similar.  I don't see me making a serious for distribution recording through BL. Not really a toy either. For me maybe more of an intermediate step unless the idea is to play with a few dudes for fun. A great ideas platform....but yeah, I would let CbB do the serious hitting. Use Bandlab for ideas. I might change my mind on that in the future. This is how it looks to me.

  4. Ken good to see you popping back in. Those health issues can be a real problem in trying to make music. Similar here right now. I wonder when it's going to all be over. You ever wonder that?

I don't often eat steak but when I do........ Picked up some nice ribeye steaks from a custom butcher near me. Bought 4. Ate two that evening with my wife. The other two were in the fridge for a week. Decided to make the other two Sat. My wife wasn't feeling well and suggested I  eat them without her. I didn't argue with her. I helped my puppies out some too. They have a good doggie life me thinks.

Well, I was on the fence, too. I forged ahead and got it, even though I already have Adagietto - the Albion stuff sounds exactly like I'm sitting in a big movie theater. Too cool.

I reasoned: if I don't get it, Spielberg calls and offers me a job. SOL there.

If I do get it, no one ever calls me for a job. But I have a lot of fun.  WIN.

    cheers,

    -Tom

I think this is a good deal Tom. I did the same. I might make a track that gets 10 plays on SC woopdeedoo....it's going be fun though, and who knows, I might make something  memorable in a good way. I watched a lot of comparison  videos, toyed with the idea that I can make decent music with the libs I already have. In the end though, I think this will add something special to the kit.  I can really add some drama and impact to my home movies.

  6. The main advantage for me of course is keeping all of the Platinum plugins and 3rd party stuff. I'll gladly keep both programs on my hard drive for that benefit. CbB bridges over and "sees" all of your Platinum stuff. Best of both worlds IMO.

The only time this might not be the case is if you did some different things with file locations in Platinum. The new program "looks" for those normal locations to associate the files. I almost never open Platinum. It's more like insurance. It's only maybe 150mb as a program and I don't want to break anything that works.

To get back to the OP...something that's free, and good, will probably not become less popular over time :)

I seen this for years with Audacity. It seems every other online conversation involving newbs  mentions it.  CbB is miles ahead of Audacity, not that Audacity is a bad program. If newbs eventually "get it"  and see the possibilities CbB will soar to new heights.

I've been throwing suggestions here and there but I get tired of it. There will be this thread where someone asks about audio programs and someone always mentions Audacity. I then pop in with , "you know there's CbB and it does all of this other stuff". Three posts further down someone else once again says, Audacity, yeah man, try dat.

Duh. If they don't get it I'm growing tired to try to get them to get it :) Go use Audacity.

CbB is catching on with more knowledgeable users though, and I believe it's  causing paid software prices to drop.

  8. Hope it all pans out ok for you Bill. I admit I haven't been watching the weather forecasts much. Didn't even know there was a flood.  It's been raining here in SE PA. Nothing bad...and if my GPS is right I'm about 500 ft above sea level. I dread the day a twister finally makes it's way here. They happen occasionally and so far we have been lucky. I don't think my stick built house would do very well in that.

Hope it doesn't turn out to be very bad at all.

  9. Well yes understood. Me neither(on learning a new DAW). It's the other frills added to the daw that sometimes tempt me, and it might do one or two things that CbB can't do. I just don't have the time. I have 4 other daws as it is.   Does v10 come with the full version of Halion? That might be a deal breaker.....or I should say deal maker for a person with uncontrollable GAS. I should just stay away from this place :)

  10. Essentially anyone can get the crossgrade deal.  Most people reading this have at least one of those DAWs. I'm probably still on the Cubase server from years ago trying their basic version. SE I think it was. Never went to the Steinberg dongle.

I think this sale is reflective of the times. When a giant like Steinberg has a sale like this it's not typical. They almost NEVER do this.

Have you noticed ProTools is loosening the pricing a little too?
