  1. Do you still need a Vienna key? And wasn't this free?
  2. I like McDSP...........and I think he likes cows. I won't attempt to milk any more out of this.
  3. A bit blowy? A bit blowy is a napkin blew off the table. LOL.
  4. One work around for cpu heavy soft synths on cpu light computers is to freeze tracks you finished. My second suggestion isn't the best solution but it has worked for me if I have lots of tracks and the soft synth I was using had latency. I would use a very lightweight similar sound for playing and then use "replace synth" feature to load the heavier version. For instance maybe if tracking intense piano use something like a Korg M-1 piano to track, then replace it with that 20gig monstrosity you really wanted to use after you lay down the midi.
  5. These look to be pretty good. Just a few thoughts- - If you don't need an interface this wouldn't be worth me buying to replace mine mainly because for me its mostly about the preamps. Almost 100% of interfaces have preamps good enough for serious studio work. Most won't be tracking at 24/192. Those that do the differences aren't night and day. The end result is also dependent on the mics you use and gain staging. We can get similar results to SSL emulation with various console emulation software. If I were looking for an interface though this would be a consideration. 4 inputs minimum are best for me. That would be the only thing to strike it from my list as a consideration. The price point means they aren't making these in England. Like everyone else they are subbing out to China for manufacture. This is a new product. Those two factors alone probably make a good argument for waiting until the first generation is done and the "bugs" are all worked out.
  6. Now is as good a time as any then I suppose. Godspeed to you all the way. For goodness sakes, there are still people living in California. If they can do it...........
  7. Well??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
  8. Using free vst might be asking for trouble in some cases since these VSTs are not tested as well as the better known paid versions are. I often see crashes mentioned here as the result of faulty or glitchy VSTs. I'm not saying they all are bad but it's a fact. In any case, I hope you find something that works for you. I tend to do what you were trying to do in a more simplistic way..........I simply load an instrument track for each instrument I want to record. I then play that instrument and record it on it's own track. Once the recording is finished I set midi input to "none". This way you don't trigger multiple synths with one channel....or alternately you could simply set different midi channels. This way no keyboard zoning is necessary. No midi channel routing is necessary. You can send all channels to one reverb if desired or use multiple reverbs.. all depending on what you want to do. Freeze tracks into audio at will. This is a good idea if you have a computer that is pushing limits of cpu. It is easy to "unfreeze" tracks if you need to go back and make a change to a track. Some orchestra VST instruments such as Amadeus have instruments already mapped to all of the keys inside of one big multi. Only an understanding of the velocity layers and which keys play which instruments is necessary.
  9. Any word on NAMM announcements from Cakewalk this year? I keep wondering if some of these goodies will once again become available. When the Adaptive Limiter first came out I used it on just about everything. I still occasionally use it. Great limiter.
  10. I was going to ask....but I really don't want to know.
  11. Any way you could reschedule that out a little further? I know you're a smart guy and have probably examined all of the possibilities. I would hope one of those would be delay? I'm imagining a huge cough of heavy ash coming out of the volcano and going right into the jet engines....or a flock of birds head toward the airport trying to get away from it. I know....I'm a worry wart.
  12. To do this on most DAWs would be a lot more work...and you can use only one midi channel. Originally I thought this was merely some kind of shell. While it is a shell it's also a lot more. I don't like the half backed feel of the whole thing...almost seems like they rushed it out a bit too soon. The JUICE scanner seems to be giving them fits. Sure you can drag the VSTs into the folder and bypass JUICE. John says they will work on that after NAMM. I don't mind a few initial issues for something like this if they are fixed in short order, but I can't afford to be playing with work arounds and fixes. I would feel better if this was a more "UNIFIED" thing. The fact that there are Korg Wavestate samples in it makes it a little more appealing. If I use something like this I need the ability to pull the synths in and work fast. His track record with the older Korg keyboards and in Omnishpere is testament to his abilities. I'm sorta ion the fence and I really hate being on the fence.....I like the idea of future rewards for early adopters. When I'm on the fence I usually fall off on the GAS side.
  13. Have you looked at Musescore? It is a free program. Imports MIDI. Uses .xml format.Has lots of support. I haven't used Crescendo so I can't comment on it. I would give that one a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
  14. Well I can see this whole thing is becoming climactic....
  15. That seem like a fun song to play. Notes can I borrow some of your fun?
  16. It's great to do our part. I can't get away from car ownership due to my job. There are so many factors concerning the weather and what causes it to do what it does. We seem to be into a warming trend now but it's gradual...very gradual. Then things swing back the other way....a very large checks and balances is built in....or maybe said another way, nothing stays the same indefinitely on planet earth. Granted sometimes these changes are hundreds and thousands of years or more.Sometimes they are short term. On a smaller scale if it gets overly hot for a day or two we get rain in the summer right after that. The atmosphere is only capable of holding so much moisture before something has to give. Fires around the globe as in the recent ones in California and Australia affect the entire weather system. I hate to say it but doing the little responsible things are a very small rudder on a very large ship. I'm not suggesting it isn't ineffective. I see it as only slightly helpful in terms of the weather and what it's going to do. Several countries regularly use weather modification. How much this is actually affecting the big weather picture I don't know. I believe that most of that is short term and doesn't have a huge effect overall. We certainly have a responsibility to do what we all can to make the world the best place it can be for our environment. I don't think this should affect plug in buying habits ??
  17. Sorry to hear about the lightening strike Bob. It seems that you have a nice setup now. I had an issue with static noise getting into my interface. Turned out the be the cable company who had recently ran a new feed didn't have it grounded well. I still occasionally get a static hum that comes and goes. Nothing too overly loud but enough to annoy. Not sure where it's coming from. I don't have a UPS. ....yet.When I had the issue mentioned I bought an outlet strip that had lightening protection and RF filtration. Most all of the power strips you buy only have some level of lightening protection or surge protection. Took some doing to find one with RF filtration made by a good company. I wired my own electrical service. It's 200 amp. I made sure everything was properly grounded. Simple power loss likely isn't as serious using SSD as it is using HDD. Power loss with a surge or brownout is another story. UPS is certainly the way to go.
  18. I know.....I know. I posted this before but it was so good I had to repeat it. WARNING- The emotion here runs really really really really really really deep.
  19. I thought I had a connection but it must have been a chimp. Do you live close to a zoo?
  20. Compare plugins like Melda's Mcompare can help in trying to match a mix with a guitar in it you like. While I agree that EQ is a matter of taste, I think almost everyone would agree that mud is mud. Sort of like a sprinkle of salt is ok and subjective but if you dump the whole bottle on the food no one will like it. This is basically what you get with a small room picking up all of those standing mid bass reflections
  21. I understand and agree with the comments in regard to having a "good recipe". Same could be said about just anything else. Want to catch fish? All you need is fish sonar, a nice boat and all of the right fishing gear, the right time of year, the right location and you will catch fish. Unfortunately people don't have and can't obtain all of the things that people who make these recordings every day for money have or have access to.. Neither can we " Make a silk purse out of a sow's ear"......sorry, old American saying. The answer lies somewhere in between. As you heard on my recording I managed to make half decent recording using basic mics and interface, cheap guitar. FYI I am primarily a pianist, intermediate violinist. I "play at" playing the guitar. So here would be my advice to a budding acoustic guitarist who only has basic stuff to record given the most common scenario. - Small bedroom or dorm situation - Inexpensive but well tuned and good sounding guitar -Basic audio interface. No high end converters. - Mid range mic capable of capturing music with a fairly flat frequency response. Keep in mind, most mics have some frequency hype here and there, even the good ones. Common room sizes for bedrooms tend to hype or amplify standing waves in the low to low mid frequency ranges. In order to minimize this effect one needs to reduce those frequencies. Usually in the 300-500 range but not always and of course the lows get rolled . Mics are not close to sound hole. Use of a dynamic EQ can be very helpful. I would not bother with attemtp to pick up small room ambience. If the mics are close you pick up less of the room and add reverb later after you record it. SDC mics are more desirable but not a requirement due to this issue. Experiment with mic locations to get best results. You should be able to capture a decent recording. Mixing is another subject which will affect your sound as well. It is possible to mix crappy and have everything sound "boxy". Here's a plugin I sometimes use that is made for acoustic work.
