CW with nanakontrol2 and midi control
jono grant replied to jono grant's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
Thanks, it is a little. I have it going now. I removed it from being a Mackie control surface and used the Korg Control Editor to set it up as a CC controller. Then you unplug it, hold down "set" and "cycle" while you plug it back in. Then I opened Cakewalk and it functioned like a midi CC controller. (To use as a control surface you unplug it and hold "Set" and "Record" while plugging it back in. Thanks! Jono -
Hi there, I just set up my Korg Nanokontrol 2 with cakewalk and I have it working as a control surface. Play/stop/mute etc. All working great. What I wish to do though, is use it to control parameters inside softsynths. Like, hit "learn" move a control on the Korg and it gets recognized in the soft synth. i can't seem to get that going. Can anyone point me to a tutorial or document that explains this? Or just give me an idea what might be wrong? I have it set up and checked in midi devices in and out but Cakewalk doesn't seem to respond to any messages. Perhaps because it's set up as an Act controller? Not sure. Any help would be appreciated... Thanks! Jono

Waveform preview on buses doesn't work properly

I have the "preview" bus hidden, is that why I have the issue then? Thanks Jono -

Waveform preview on buses doesn't work properly
jono grant replied to jono grant's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
I spoke too soon. I thought the wave form preview was working again but after closing and reopening the session and other sessions I still have the problem. I'll attach a short video showing the issue Thanks waveform preview.wmv -
Waveform preview on buses doesn't work properly
jono grant replied to jono grant's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
Thanks Noel! I had not seen that! Worked like a charm. Funnily enough, after changing it to not "Set time during playback" the wave form preview worked properly again! And even more odd, when I switched it back again the wave preview still worked. Thanks very much! -
It seem that waveform preview (where a preview of your waveform gets drawn on-the-fly) does not work properly in CWBL. Nothing draws during playback unless you click on the screen/bus and then a small portion of the waveform will show, this is the same on synth audio tracks. Also, clicking anywhere on the screen now in Cakewalk makes the cursor go to that point which is very annoying. You used to have to click on the ruler for that to happen which was great. Cakewalk, think about fixing "Waveform preview" so it works and perhaps put back clicking on the time line without changing cursor during playback. There are many reasons you need to click on the screen to un-highlight things etc. You rarely need the cursor to move when you click the screen. Thanks

Add a setting called "maintain position of invisible data/automation" on/off or something then perhaps? I would think the idea of hiding ghosting data would simply be to clean up the screen and not have anything to do with moving data.
-
You nailed it brother!!! That was it! SO, CAKEWALK tracks do not get selected with their clips if "Display Ghosted Data" is not enabled.... now we know. And that IS a bug, @Noel Borthwick ^ see above^ The clips should get selected regardless of ghosted data showing. Nothing to do with each other. They should fix that IMO. Thanks Chuck E Baby!!

Hi Chuck E Baby, just noticing in your video above that your envelopes are faintly displayed even when you're in "clip" mode. Mine does not do that (unless I'm in X1 or Plat) Is your video above in Bandlab? Might be a clue there... Thanks
-
I know you're trying to help and I appreciate it very much! I was just saying "what should I look for in a global setting?" is all. I went through all the settings in preferences turning stuff on and off and testing again, no change. I have Platinum as well and the problem doesn't exist there either, only in the Bandlab version. The one major difference I see, is that in both X1 and Platinum, when a track is set to "clips" it still shows a very faint image of the envelope on top of the clip and when you select a clip , you can see that the envelope also gets selected. In Bandlab however, the clip does not show the faint image of the envelope and the envelope does not get selected along with the clip UNLESS you expand the automation lanes, then it works as it should. I thought it might have something to do with x-ray but it didn't. I also tried using the track filter to switch back and forth, it didn't make a difference. I think that has the same function as the tools HUD but wanted to make sure. I wonder what it could be? Video card related? No idea. All my versions of CW (plat x1 and BL) have the same global settings as far as the way I set them up... I've attached a short video showing my preferences/settings in BL. settings.wmv

Okay but what?
-
Thanks guys, from your advice I got it working after watching this video on youtube: Very tricky! Thanks again!
-
Yes, I definitely have that option set, as I showed in the video. When I do the same thing in X1 it works.
-
Thanks Noel, I'll attach a CWP with a clip all set up etc. Also, here's a short video of me showing the problem: (PS. I'm still on Win 8.1, I feel like some of the issues I'm having might relate to that? Not Sure. move track automation with clip test.zip

Some plugins I have don't have learn controls as part of their interface. Ivory Piano for instance. Whenever I run into this, I notice the act/learn button at the top of the plugin. Whenever I engage it, then click on or adjust a knob followed by moving a knob on my midi controller, cakewalk never gets the midi message so I'm unable to learn the control. The plugin is set to receive midi, I can play and hear the piano sound but it doesn't get the learn-control type of midi message. Also, if I engage automation "write-mode" in Cakewalk and physically move the knob, it doesn't record the automation like that either. Is there something I'm missing with Act/Learn that has to do with configuration of the program? I'm stumped. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Jono

Thanks, I have that selected but it only works if the lanes are expanded, which I'm now figuring out. J
-
I just figured out why... the envelope lane has to be expanded or the track automation doesn't get selected. Come on Cakewalk, not a good revision. I find so many of the new changes just make tasks take longer. J

@Noel Borthwick Can you help here Noel? Should be a simple thing... see above Thanks Jono

Clip envelopes move with the clips, that's fine. It's track envelopes, even if I select "select track envelopes with clips" they don't move if I drag the clip. Here's a video of this in BL Cakewalk and then in Sonar X1 (where it works) There must be a way to do this in one step. I'm sure many people want to "move" a clip and they would want their automation nodes to move with it. move track envelope with clip.mp4
-
I used to be able to grab a clip in sonar, drag it somewhere and the automation would move as well (unless I chose not to select automation with clips) New cakewalk doesn't move the track automation any more! What's going on??? I don't want to use some cut special thing, way too complicated. Just want to select clip or clips with their automation and drag them somewhere all together. What am I doing wrong?? They wouldn't remove that ability would they? Thanks Jono

Please fix zoom (to focused track)!!
jono grant replied to jono grant's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
Thanks, no, not talking about "Auto-track zoom" I know about that one but I don't choose to use it much. Sometimes I just want to zoom whatever zoom-state the tracks are in but stay focused on the track I have selected, that's all. Cheers -
Please fix zoom (to focused track)!!
jono grant replied to jono grant's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
Thanks, I will post there. I am zooming either using the ctrl+UP/DOWN or with the little zoom tool in the bottom right of the screen. If I use either, the whole session goes to the top or bottom of the file instead of keeping the selected track in the center of the screen as it used to. I'm having other issues with CW and video, wondering if it's because I'm on windows 8.1... switching to 10 soon. We'll see. Thanks -
Always when zooming in previous versions of Sonar etc. it would zoom in to the focused track that was selected, which made wonderful sense. NOW however, no matter what track you have selected, when you do any zooming, the program just wildly goes to the bottom or top of the session, ignoring the track you have selected. Please fix that!! So annoying and time consuming to have to re-scroll through a huge session file each time you want to zoom in or out. Just have it zoom in to the selected track. I know there are different ways of zooming and expanding tracks but the basic zoom in/zoom out function should zoom with the selected track in focus. Why change such a basic sensible function? Please fix this bug, it's been present in all bandlab versions of Cakewalk. Test it in Sonar Platinum, you'll see that it zooms to the selected track. Thanks Jono
