If the Korg has a driver and a USB port then you can connect it directly to your computer. In that case yes it should power up with your computer and before you open Cakewalk. If you use a midi cable to an interface then it doesn’t matter if the Korg is on or off. Cakewalk will see the midi port of the interface and if that box is selected in midi preferences then Cakewalk will show it as an input option on midi and simple instrument tracks. Cakewalk has no way of knowing or caring what is connected to the interface. It is communicating with your interfaces midi driver not the Korg. Only USB midi connection need a driver and then Cakewalk will identify it and it will show as an available device on the list in preferences.

Recording audio to external drive
John Vere replied to Dave Gelzleichter's topic in Computer Systems
As I said I did this on 3 computers. 2 desktop and one laptop and all 3 booted up and are still working to this day. I would imagine they have made many updates to the app. I’ve had at least 3 in the last year. -
I use a battery powered leaf blower! Why mess around. Canned air is not very powerful. And air compressors you need to have a dedicated one with a special moisturize filter or you can make things worse. Another handy tool is a hi quality 1” or 1/2 “ paint brush to dislodge stuck bits. Laptops are tricky and I’ve always tried to blow backwards from the airflow. Otherwise I figured I’m pushing the dust in deeper.

Recording audio to external drive
John Vere replied to Dave Gelzleichter's topic in Computer Systems
Samsung has an app called the Magician. I used it to update 3 different computers OS drives from smaller to larger faster SDD drives. It takes about 20 minutes. You connect the new drive and the Magician will clone the old drive. Swap them out and your back in business. So no need for a external drive. If it is a desktop it will have room for probably minimum of 3 drives anyway. -
Frank's MIDI FX not being recognised
John Vere replied to BassMasterGeneral's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
https://plugins4free.com/plugin/3875/ Looks like he’s a free channel strip. But there could be 2 Franks. He’s a real Weener -
Exactly and then you apply it to the VST instruments track, not the midi. There’s lots of free Tremolos here https://plugins4free.com/search?term=Tremolo I like the flying tremolo

Frank's MIDI FX not being recognised
John Vere replied to BassMasterGeneral's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
Midi effects are used on midi tracks. It’s a limited selection. So think you are taking about VST audio effects not midi. they can’t be put on a midi track they go on the instrument track in the FX bin. -
I actually only use it for a way to map out songs and enter chords or lyric clues. I found it was a total failure for trying to re arrange songs. Too many glitches and waisted time with failed exports. I find it still faster to use ripple editing and copy paste but I use the arranger markers to guide me.

Yes for sure I would certainly use it. And yes then you don't need phantom from the interface when using a dedicated Pre Amp. If the Octa capture has line inputs then you are set.

I think he nailed it. Cakewalk is very picky about audio. There are many people who had to purchase a different interface as that is one of the few that doesn't play well with Cakewalk. I would try this to verify. Totally remove asio4all if that is present. Make sure to remove it in the REG EDIT app too. Disconnect the UMC22 re boot the computer, make sure your computers audio is working as per in the video. Open Cakewalk and before you load a project set up your Audio in preferences in WASAPI shared mode. Now load a project. Usually your issue is caused by 3rd part plug ins and opening in safe mode can be used to fix that issue. You can also try running the interface with WASAPI mode but I have a feeling it doesn't support it. Behringer is a Mac focused company. Here's the audio trouble shooting video- https://youtu.be/opDwsC4_llg

To be clear, Cakewalks Midi tracks do not show some types of data, It takes that information and puts it elsewhere like the event list and sys ex view. It took me a while to get used to the way it works compared to other DAW's and Sequencer software. If it is a already created midi file when you Open then it will create a track for each midi channel. The track numbers and channels will match. If you Import a midi file into a project that already has a few tracks it will populate the project starting with the midi track you had to put in focus to enable the import. This is why you always OPEN a complete midi file as that will have all the correct information including tempo and sys ex data. IMPORT is for midi clips and data like tempo will not be included.

There’s no point in what you are doing. This final version will only work for as long as the Company wants it to work. It is tied to an on line activation system so that they have total control over its future. They have not put a time limit on the final shutdown of CbB all they will say is they are giving people plenty of time to transition. It is anyone's guess how long that will be. So when that day comes, this final version will slip into Demo mode permanently. Having the installer won’t do anything to fix that. As said a zillion times already. 1- Upgrade to Sonar which we have been told will have different price points depending on addons etc. It is highly possible there will be a very affordable version for those sort on cash. 2- Revert to pre Cakewalk version of Sonar. ( not a good choice for most) 3-Change to a different DAW ( What's the point? the price will be comparable to the new Sonar anyhow) 4-Buy a Hardware Digital Multitrack recording system, a hardware sequencer and a room full of sound modules and keyboards. That's possible $10,000 but it will always work.

It’s funny to me. Since the removal of that POS from the midi device list last update. we are all of a sudden aware that possibly hundreds of people have been actually been using it. It makes sense if your not one to read the manual or watch tutorials then it will be what you used to get using the default settings. So now those hundreds of people will just have to actually learn how Cakewalk uses VST instruments. Shhh! Don’t tell them, it’s a secret.

Your wording is not clear. But first, sys exclusive and time signature data are not part of a track. Sys ex has its own view which opens in the multi dock. Time signature is found in the transport module. All I see is you have a blank midi track and by default the first track inserted is called track 1. It is not a control track. Possibly you have been using another sequencer that worked like that.

This! Over the years I have fried 3 mixer pre amps due to Phantom being on and plugging stuff in or out. You can also damage speakers. So I have always avoided it like the plague. I don’t own any studio gear that needs it. I avoid it. I use all dynamic mikes. Even my DI boxes have batteries or wall warts. I also have a few condenser mikes that use batteries. But there’s still a million times working in bands etc that the Phantom power was on and at least with The household brands like Shure, AKG and Sennheiser I’ve never had a damaged dynamic mike. Best practices is turn it off at all times until needed. Connect everything mute the channels, the master and auxiliary’s and then turn it on. inputs that give you a choice of say 4 in a group only plug in XLR equipment. Don’t use the 1/4” inputs of that group. If your only choice is global for all channels I would not ever use that board with it on unless you are extra extra careful.

Some thoughts. What do you hear if you solo the reverb bus? Did you try using a different reverb? Did you try deleting the send and re-adding it? What is the peak level of the vocal track when you set the track fader at unity? What is the peak level of the reverb bus at unity? Do you have a vocal sub bus? Try adding the send there.

Using Cakewalk on two different computer installations
John Vere replied to Ricky Wayne Hunt's question in Q&A
I always have had 2 computers that are loaded with everything. Once set up it’s just a matter of keeping the second one updated from time to time if you don’t use it every day. In my case it’s a laptop for mobile recording. As said most vendors have no limit on installing but some only allow 2. Only thing I have on a dongle is Cubase and Wave Lab. The rest use eLicencer. And now even upgrading the OS hard drive is only a 20 minute task once I discovered the Samsung Magician. I have 3 other laptops and computers that also have Cakewalk and a lot of stuff installed. I use the demo of Addictive drums and I ended up with 4 license for my Air products. So only Melodyne is missing for me on most of those machines. -
This is why I have been recommending people set everything at 48. I totally stopped have conflicts once I did this. I’ve basically obliterated 44.1 from my system and music apps and now everything always works. The other thing I also recommend is to disable all other audio devices in Windows sound settings. You really only need your interface for all your audio. I can run multiple Apps and the internet etc it all works together.
-
I have no clue what you are getting at. Melodyne, Normalize or any process function quickly analyzed the track and then it’s up to you to make the changes. Processing time depends on your system capabilities etc. Possibly what you are trying to say is as example the You Lean Loudness meter free version has to listen to the whole song in real time to give you a peak and LUFS reading. The paid version you can drag and drop the audio and it gives you results in seconds.
-
You can open older projects that are 44.1. And you don’t have to convert them if they are not important or your not recording new audio. And some projects might be to messy to work with ! You have a choice. I have lots of old backup projects etc that are 44.1 because 10 years ago I was still stuck there because of my set up with my Yamaha o1v which is only 44.1 via the SPDIF connection. I switched to 48 for all new projects about 2014 when I got the Scarlett 6i6 interface. But I still would open and work on the 44.1 stuff with out issue. You just hear a slight pop when the clock rate changes. About 2 years ago when I got into making videos the 44.1 became more of an issue because I needed Cakewalk open and playing while recording screen captures to OBS studio. That’s when I figured out how to convert projects to 48. So every time I opened a 44.1 I would take about 2-5 minutes to convert it to 48. Now everything that is important to me is 48. The only downside is the fact that all audio tracks after the export will be continuous from start to end. This might be a problem for people with messy chopped up projects. I’m not one of those. I don’t keep extra takes or use take lanes. Those might be in a back up file but my latest versions of my songs are very straight forward and at the most only 8 audio tracks. Sure there’s a transition process that takes a bit of extra effort but for me it was time well spent.

This. And with that in mind we should still post our music. Even if only 100 people stumble on my music that's 90 more people than I would have had in the 90's with my CD's sitting in stores for $20.

Anyone still(or Ever) using Roland Octa-Capture?
John Vere replied to Pathfinder's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
Not sure if you saw the videos I made last week about the L8. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7YqVth30eGs-D7nsBl0iPsavrtpnrrsg Now I've done one gig with it I'm going to make a 3rd sort of as a overview and review. I first bought it as a mixer. You can see in the picture how I need everything to be very compact and fit on the little table. I have 2 small Mackie mixers one has no effects and the other the effects are terrible. So I have used a Voice Live pedal for vocal effects. That is a nightmare of connections as well as I've started having issues to complicated to list. One being if you look at the picture you will see my X keys USB footswitch on the floor. The Voice live was beside it and sometimes my pedalboard. Three times at a show I accidentally stepped on the X keys instead of the Voice live and my backing track would stop! It's a good thing that show was not a dance or a 300 person outdoor concert!! This is just another sign of old age because I had rarely had this happen before. So the Voice live has gotta go! And you can see I also put my pedal board out of harms way. I have other larger mixers and only my Yamaha 01V has effects I can use. I've played in many bands and used all sorts of different mixers, the effects are not what I like, ever. Thus the search for a small mixer with good effects. In all the YouTube reviews of the L8 they praised the effects so that got my attention. Got nothing to lose because of Amazon return policy so I ordered it. I was blown away that there was a pre set, Vocal 2, that was almost exactly what I like. I only had to tweak it a bit. Anyways the board was amazingly easy to set up and use at the gig. Then the bonus. I often record my performances to see how I'm doing and make improvements. For that I have to connect my Tascam DR 40 to the RCA tape outputs of my mixer. This gives me a "board mix". This is now built right in. The Zoom took 20 seconds to set it up and I recorded myself into 6 tracks. If you look in the picture you will see a camera on my lighting stand. It's a terrible angle but for what it's worth I could now dump the recording into Cakewalk, tweak the audio and produce a live video with killer sound. 48/32. That's right it records at 32 if you like. I also dumped 30 backing tracks on to a SD card I had on standby just in case my Laptop finally died> You can play these directly from the mixer. Originally I was not thinking of it as a serious Audio interface. But my Motu is now sitting up on the self next to the Scarlett. I will probably sell it and keep the Scarlett as at least the Scarlett was more dependable and has SPDIF. The Zoom doesn't have Midi so I need to keep an interface that does. As an interface it is a better workflow for me due to all the inputs and having complete control over my monitor and headphone mixes. I realized I could also connect 2 more Monitors pairs as well. No need to change the Master output to 3/4. Just turn a knob. I'm running my sub off Mix B. I can now run at a lower buffer setting as well. The ASIO driver is a good one. Zoom has come along way in that regards . -
Read this it’s a lot of info but they did a great job of covering the topic https://aristake.com/digital-distribution-comparison/ I just posted 14 songs as an album on Distro kid just to get them off my mind. Most of the songs were older and I kept redoing them. Now they are safe from me doing that again. I will now finish another batch this winter. I have no hopes of ever making money with them But it’s great to play live gigs and tell people that they can find me on all the music sites now. Same goes for friends and family. Im also slowly making videos for each song.
