How to turn existing midi tracks to virtual instruments?
John Vere replied to Don Schneider's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
Funny tread, the OP has not answered -
I have always used what ever interface I have hooked up for all sounds on my PC. Never had it not work. And I work in 44.1 in Cakewalk. I watch a lot of utubes and also work in Vegas Movie studio without issue.

distorted vocals track but why?
John Vere replied to RICHARD HUTCHINS's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
First place I'd look is my master bus meters second the tracks VU meters. Turn up your monitors and turn down your tracks until you sort it out. -
Insert a vst instrument in the track inspector there is a box "i" for input select the keyboard and omni. Make sure input echo is highlighted. Make sure the VST is outputing to your master buss. You can check most VST's using the GUI to preview the sounds. Example SI Bass pluck a string. SI drums hit a drum. In my signature is a link to a few tutorials on using midi.

I paid $40 for mine Around here things go on Facebook Marketplace real cheap.

Latency should not matter as Dave has said, My system I keep at a medium buffer always and I have zero latency because I'm monitoring at the interface and not at the back end. All systems will have latency and the best of them get things pretty low but this is only needed for using things like guitar sims. 99% of modern set ups will never screw up at a medium buffer, Too high or too low they might. The best way to trouble shoot problems is to strip things down to bare bones. Record your vocals to a project with just a 2 track audio backing track. Nothing else added. If the glitch is still there then it's not a software issue. Then to test hardware you have to swap out each component until you find what is broken. This might require you to use another audio interface you borrow.

Playback Issues with Laptop Speakers, and exporting
John Vere replied to Jon's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
Export will create a wave ( or MP3 ) file of the mix you hear if you select the correct boxes in the dialog. For me the default has always work perfectly. -
Using Ample Sound Guitar VST in Cakewalk
John Vere replied to paul307's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
I tried downloading and re installing a few times. The error message is it can't find the sample library so there is no sound. I did not change any pathways etc. I've installed it to a lot of other computer before without issue. I think it's just this one computer which is not important. It's just my office computer and I don't do any real recording with it. But I like to muck about with midi files. My main DAW computer is still in mothballs since we moved into a new house last summer. Busy with reno's and enjoying my cabinet making skills so music as a hobby took a back seat. Spending money on tools instead of music gear. Then to top it off, the only gigs we ever play each year have all been cancelled. One of my reno's will be a real nice music room,,, complete with proper treatment. I hope Cakewalk is still working when I get there. -
Using Ample Sound Guitar VST in Cakewalk
John Vere replied to paul307's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
Something has gone wrong with these freebies. I can't use them in w10 the bass or the guitar. They just give me error messages . I used them for about 2 years before and not sure what has gone wrong. I can still use them on my W7 laptop. -
Playback Issues with Laptop Speakers, and exporting
John Vere replied to Jon's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
With Cakewalk you should always use your ASIO interface. It will get pissed if you don't. If you want to hear what your song sounds like through the crappy laptop speakers then export the song and play it in media player with Cakewalk closed and the interface unplugged. -
I normally choose just the first synth option as I will only be using it for a rough idea of the song. I generally replace with better instruments as I move forward. The TTS-1 is bets used for playback of GM files. Some people like simple instrument tracks some don't. You'll have to try it to see which you prefer. The TTS-1 does have 4 outputs that you can assign the 16 channels to. Think of it as a 4 bus sub mix. Example send the Bass to 1 the drums to 2 , keyboards to 3 and the rest to 4. This would be for processing outside of the GUI features which are very limited. If you need more then you would simply insert another TTS-1.

This is why I like to use a small mixer when doing things like screen captures. I have real controls and can balance levels on the fly as I record.

How to turn existing midi tracks to virtual instruments?
John Vere replied to Don Schneider's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
Note for the future the link in above post is dead this is the list where it will be kept up to date for as long as I’m still here the tutorial in question is # 105 -
Hmm, Your not using per project folders?? That became the default a long time ago. There were a lot more threads like these in those days. I forget how to find them now it's been a long time.. But I think it has something to do with running a search for the name of the audio file. " NAME OF SONG" , Rec ( 217) .wav The tricky thing is that number in brackets is pretty random.

How to turn existing midi tracks to virtual instruments?
John Vere replied to Don Schneider's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
There is always more than one or two or three ways to do anything in Cakewalk. We each have our own workflows that work for us. No one way is correct but as scook say's some are redundant and I agree with him that instrument tracks are just that. Each to his own. My tutorials are very clear on how to do what the OP is after using a very basic standard workflow. This includes OPENING a midi file and using TTS-1 to get a start. Then I continue with explaining 1 of the many ways you can exchange the TTS-1 for better VST instruments. -
Weird erratic sound in 16 audio tracks simultaneous record
John Vere replied to James Argo's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
I recorded live band 16 tracks night after night to a 2008 Sony laptop duo core 8 GB RAM night after night for a good 2 years and never had and issue. I used an old Tascam us 1641 interface for 14 audio tracks plus 2 tracks were midi. Later on I added a Yamaha mixer that put out a stereo USB and used WDM mode( later WASAPI ) . along side the Tascam. So I think your issue might be the Deltas. I did nothing special to Cakewalk. The projects were bare bones no effects added yet, just the 16 tracks. Only noticeable glitch was the graphics were slow. -
The problem you'll run into is that software is developed to be used in a way that the the people who design it think we want it to work. We will rarely find software that is designed to work the way we think it should work. So your best bet is to explore the software's options and choose the workflow that is closest to what you would like it to be. 10 years ago I fought nail and tooth with Sonar to try and make it do things "my way" . At a certain point I gave up and just started learning how it works. I have zero issues now with getting things done. I just adopted my way of thinking to the way it actually works. Midi can be overwhelming to new users. But a lot of us have been using midi and computers since day one in 1983? . It's best to think in terms of each track is a different instrument. In my signature is a link to using midi on my web page. It's very simple stuff.

You most certainly make a whole bunch of tracks out of midi data. My easy method is to copy the track and paste to a new blank track and then delete the notes I don't want by highlighting using the piano keys on the left. Example you have a full drum track and want to separate each part or use a different VST for different parts. You can extract a bass line from the left hand of a piano part etc. Pretty common to copy a track a few times and layer it up with different sounds. Then you take each of the tracks and make small changes.

Opening .cwb file freezes CbB - Resolved - Operator Error Fail
John Vere replied to Johnboy's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
FYI I followed what you did, I opened a new project and called it test 1 using the 4 track template. I recorded a few measures of silence. I then "save as" to a CWB file. and closed everything. It asked to save the Test 1 CWP file and I said yes. Opened CbB and when I tried to open the Test 1 CWB it has a dialog asking to unpack the file. I said yes and it said it couldn't because that file already existed ( Test 1 CWP) so I renamed it test 2 and it opened no problem. But there's no point in using bundle files these days. They are a left over from the days of small hard drives I think. Things have been known to go sideways and lots of posts on this forum from people in your situation. -
Opening .cwb file freezes CbB - Resolved - Operator Error Fail
John Vere replied to Johnboy's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
To bad you used bundle files. They are not what I would recommend for anything you want to keep safe. I know it's too late but for others who may read this. To copy 4 or 8 or 16 track tapes to Cakewalk you'll need an interface that can handle to track count. It is possible to use 2 or 4 tracks and sync them up latter. This is a very rough step by step, there's lots more that I would do but I'll keep it simple. Open a new project, insert 8 ( or ?) audio tracks and assign each tracks input to the corresponding channel of the interface. track 1 to input 1 etc. Insert a master buss You might want to add pro channel and any effects you know your going to use for sure. Save this as a template Now do a "save as" name the song and save as a CWP file. Put in record standby mode and play the tape. Adjust input level for each track. Now rewind and start recording the song. When song is over SAVE. Play it back to make sure its OK. Now for song #2 open the template and immediately SAVE AS and re name as song #2. There are other ways to accomplish the same thing like deleting the track data but the key factor is to make sure to SAVE AS before starting the new song. -
How to turn existing midi tracks to virtual instruments?

My tutorials cover this exact topic. See video # 105 importing midi -
Second monitor. The multi dock is always full screen for me.

As said you will always freeze the midi track to create the audio, No point in running the signal out and back in the digital converters. If what your after is outboard effects then freeze the midi and then loop back the audio, It should be in perfect sync. Always use ASIO for this, all other driver modes won't be in sync.
