    Back from Vegas!

Welcome back Larry! Glad you hear it was a good time.
  2. They've already started: EastWest have Composer Cloud; Cinesamples have Musio. The question isn't just when will they be available; it's also will customers be willing to subscribe? There's also another aspect - you'll still need to download them to use them, whether that's as a temporary install, or whenever a project is opened (which will be painful for larger libraries). In the case of the former, you've arguably already got that with any company that allows multiple downloads - you just install what you want when you need it.
  3. I've got an official XBox controller like that one, but there's a slight difference - the centre button has an XBox cross on it, rather than being mirror-like; not sure if it's a regional thing (UK model), or maybe a different generation of controller. The wireless XBox One controller's pretty good. It's slightly more comfortable for my hands, and the triggers have feedback in supported games. I don't have the latest one, so I need a wireless dongle instead of using Bluetooth. You can buy a lithium-ion battery and charging cable from the Microsoft store, so no need to go through packs of batteries.
  4. ok - can't do that; can only adjust by click/drag
  5. Do you mean the presets browser with the mouse wheel? I can still use the scroll wheel there.
  6. Depends on who you ask. Some say the only way to play a racing game is using a racing wheel controller.
  7. Christmas Sleigh Bells Introducing Christmas Bells, a new free sample library featuring 3 sizes of sleigh bells, multiple round robins, dynamics and 3 preset rhythms to give you an instant Christmas sound. Download for free THIS LIBRARY WORKS WITH THE FREE KONTAKT PLAYER AND IS NKS COMPATIBLE https://sonixinema.com/products/christmas-bells
  8. Maybe, but not necessarily. Tubes will distort the audio in a certain way. Saturation plugins may or may not distort in the same way. It's a bit like saying if I want a car to look like a Ferrari, I just need to ask for it to be sprayed red (and yes, I know they come in other colours too); you might get the same shade of red, but it might also be a different red. I get what you're saying though - is the tube overdrive the best way to process a sound? Again it'll depend on what the context is. In some contexts you might want something snappier, which is when you might reach for something like a 3A or an FET. I don't think modern-ness has as much to do with it as the attack and release times, which will be more or less the same with emulation of a certain piece of hardware. Taking the 2A for example, the attack time looks to be approximately 10ms. This is long enough to let sharp transients through, meaning you won't get the clamping sound or pumping that might go with it. Because of the way that a 2A works, the release time will be dependent on the input material. It's also relatively long (the cakewalk 2A had the option for fast or original release time) meaning that it can help with levelling the signal. For a vocal, this would mean that the transients remain (so it will retain a more natural sound), and the level of the vocal can become a bit more consistent. Is it the most desirable sound? It depends - if you need an aggressive rock vocal, you might pick another plugin. As for saturation level, it's again dependent on sonic target and source material. If you have a something that sounds thin, having some saturation (either modern or vintage) may help with that. If the source is very rich and full, or if we're targeting a more naked/natural sound, using something without saturation may give better results.
  9. I think people generally mean the vacuum tubes that were used in those devices. Vacuum tubes will give you a nice thick sound because of the additional harmonics that they add to the signal. If you have a thin tone, the additional harmonics will thicken up the sound as they add new material to the signal, which will be different from simply boosting a signal with an EQ. Think of the emulation as more of a description of it's sound and suitability, rather than being there to make audio sound 'vintage', e.g. Use a 2A for smooth material Use a 3A for more punch Use an FET for even more punch There are quite a few 'vintage' plugins that let you alter the sound, e.g. the Overloud 2A has a harmonics control; the PA channel strips allow you to set the level of background noise. Is it possible to make a 'better' compressor with a multi-effect plugin like BYOME? Maybe - but if you start dialling in a compressor attack/release time similar to the other compressor types (which are good for the material that they're generally used on) and add some kind of overdrive to fatten up the sound, you're starting to move into the ballpark of the emulation plugins. Another thing to consider - we now have all sorts of ways to transform a signal using DSP. Is using a guitar amp with vacuum tubes really still the best way to get the best sound?
  10. This is one of my favourite Overloud plugins. Be sure to give it a go if you do pick it up. If you're unsure about when to use it, as a rough guide use the 2A for where you want things sounding smooth: vocals, pads, maybe strings; use the 3A where you want some punch: guitars, drums, etc.
  11. At ~0:30 the video shows some text: over 400MB samples with 600MB factory library. I wonder: is this for people who might not realise that 600 classifies as over 400?

  13. I'm not sure what there is to be worried about from looking at whois alone. Namecheap is company where you can buy web domains from. All of the details are redacted as they bought privacy as part of their domain. It's probably someone's home/side business and they don't want to expose where they live to the world. They're probably either a solo dev, or a small company, which doesn't make them that much different from some other small companies that have deals posted here often. ... and no: I have nothing to do with Techvation
  14. 8Dio is focussed on more traditional sampled Kontakt instruments. SoundPaint is its own engine. They have a special proprietary format that only opens in SoundPaint. If I understand correctly, SP is more geared towards sound design: you can open multiple instrument layers and blend them together. It also supposedly does away with sampling layers to give you a fully smooth velocity transition; from what I've understood in the sales videos it's some kind of cross between sampling and granular technology - lots of mini samples that put together a sound appropriate for the input velocity in real time. The SP engine is free and you can import you own samples. SP libraries seem to be much bigger than 8Dio libraries (in terms of disk space).

They're like a certain bodily orifice: there's a problem if you have more than one 😜

I used to have to use a really crappy old machine at a company I once worked at (as a software developer). Our dev tools were fairly resource intensive and my machine would crash quite frequently. Ever since then, I typically press Ctrl+Shift+S (save all open windows) after typing every three words
  17. Don't you also have to pay an annual ZDT fee as well?
  18. I think AI's going to open up a can of copyright worms, or at least make some ripples in the area. As things are now, works are copyrighted and people can claim copyright infringement if there are substantial (or even unsubstantial as we've seen in some cases) similarities in works. AI can be really powerful, but AI needs to be trained on source material. If I understand correctly, some governments are making all works open for AI learning (there may or may not be a possibility to opt out). As the output of AI will be derived from its learnings, there is going to be a whole lot of new AI generated music that will sounds like the various pieces that it was trained on. I'm not sure how copyright if going to be affected by this.

    APD Buyer's Club

This is slightly different though: The reward money is there to bring regular priced items down to their base price and can't be used for the showcase deals. These vouchers bring the showcase deal prices down (except for the exceptions that they specify) by a further $20. I can say whether this will make it any more worthwhile; I'm just saying there's a slight difference in the two discount schemes.
  20. There one in a plugin here: https://haveaudio.com/collections/virtual-instruments/products/uap-unique-audio-plugin
  21. Version 6 has two new updates that I do appreciate: Track icons. Yeah; some people don't care for them, but I find them really useful for quick track identification on the console view. The new video track. I started experimenting with video scoring and it's really nice for video to be more integrated in the experience.
