  1. Heard the developer is ending things and now giving away this synth. Spectra is a powerful digital additive resynthesiser built exclusively for the Reason platform. Spectra's ability to analyze and resynthesise any periodic, harmonic waveform via its inbuilt spectral waveform analyzer means you may never exhaust Spectra's sound creation possibilities. If you have ever wanted to sculpt sound by drawing your harmonic spectrum, waveform or drawing a spectral filter response then Spectra may be what you've been waiting for. Please note that Spectra is only available for Reason 9.2+ owners. https://www.reasonstudios.com/shop/rack-extension/spectra-additive-resynthesizer/ I downloaded this and can confirm that it works in Reason Lite. Nice addition to the rack and thought it was worth mentioning here for all that got it.

  6. As far as I understand, 1176s are used when very fast attack times and the distortion they add are desirable, e.g. on rock drums where you might want an added edge/aggressive tone. For bass, you might want to try an LA/3A. Either will sound good. LA/2A can sound good on vocals too.

  10. Could have been a disaster. The guitar amp was DOA. He had a small second amp that's normally used as a satellite on my side of the stage so I can hear the guitar better. We had no choice but to mic that little amp and run it through the PA. With no extra mic stand, we had to dangle the mic down the front, so we're capturing it off-axis. An SM-58 is definitely not a side-address microphone, so as you can imagine it sounded pretty thin and nasty. Fortunately, we had a great crowd and the performance went over well. Everybody was firing on all cylinders, even me, being fueled by Starbucks iced mochas. With my high blood pressure I'm not supposed to do caffeine, and normally avoid it. Put a couple iced mochas in me and I'm like that squirrel in Open Season. One of the reasons the performance worked well was that for the first time I was getting guitar through my vocal monitor. Being able to hear him clearly meant that we were in better sync than ever and I was able to play off him in a complementary fashion. Sometimes adversity spawns epiphanies. So today I'm trying to figure out how I can monitor the guitar like that in future. I'm thinking a line out to the board and just routing it to the monitors but not the mains.

  14. That has also been my experience with them as well. I have worked with their Hammersmith Piano which I think is one of the best, and have been working through their new THRENODY STRINGS which is very unusual ;^) but still has excellent quality wrapped into it.

  15. My wife came in and saw me waving the toilet brush like a baton, and she thought I was crazy. But she already thought that. I know everybody thought I was joking, but I seriously do think that the toilet brush articulation on PIANO COLORS is very beautiful in that demo. People need to start using toilet brushes on guitars and violins and all kinds of instruments. Wash them well first, of course. ?

  17. Another option, insert FreeG as needed in the signal chain. You can always leave fader at unity so as to use only the metering. Or add gain where needed. FreeG - Sienda (sonalksis.com)

  18. Erik, this is really fun theme. I like your approach to theming, go bold as it were. The more variety in our theme collections, all the better! Thanks for your hard work.

  19. That might just work better than a line out. And I've actually got both. But I don't carry them in my gig bag and we were playing on an island hours away from the nearest music store. I thought I was adequately prepared because I'd brought a hat.

  25. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/search.php?s=behringer+pedal&sb=low2high You can find these prices at a lot of other places (Amazon, etc). Clone list here: https://www.tonestart.com/ultimate-behringer-guitar-pedal-clone-list/ I don't consider these 'road worthy', but in the studio where the plastic won't break to crap as easily, I've been really happy with a lot of them.

  31. Uh, thanks for "solely" ? Well, since you asked, It's all about usability, and preventing boredom. For me, it also needs to dissolve into the background. I don't want to be reminded of what theme I'm using, it needs to be invisible, whilst still providing a comfortable working environment. That means consistency, and for me, the best way to be consistent is to chose some constraints, and get creative within the constraints (works for music creation too). The constraints vary. STEAM PUNK was just me exploring theming for the first time, and deciding half-way along that I needed a goal, and it looked, well, steam-punky. POLAR BLUE 2020 is really SteveC's work, I just gave it a polish for my own entertainment. I learned some stuff. TUNGSTEN SLATE was a second attempt, this time starting from Tungsten but warming it up slightly, giving it a slate-blue flavor. I learned some more stuff. MIL-SPEC ALPHA was an attempt to make a mid-tone flat theme somewhat inspired by Ableton, avoiding "all grey and no play" and ending up in a khaki zone, hence the vibe. For FLAT WHITE it was, "how far can I go in taking MIL-SPEC ALPHA and making a really "light" theme?" For FLIGHT DECK I really wasn't planning on creating another theme. It was seeing a screen shot of an aircraft interior in MS Flight Sim 2020 and thinking, "that looks comfortable, like it would be hard to do the wrong thing". I have no plans for more themes. (I was considering 1960's NASA but it would just end up somewhere near MIL-SPEC ALPHA and FLIGHT DECK so I don't see the point) Honestly, I find myself switching between FLIGHT DECK and MIL-SPEC ALPHA every other week. Or FLAT WHITE (matcha).

  33. you could set the volume faders to unity (0 on the console) and adjust gain knob to until you're peaking at -3db, or lower. then you can raise and lower as needed. as a note: the 0 mark on the meters does not indicate clipping on volume (as you noted), but you can still clip if the gain is too high. one option is to set your playback meter to "pre fader" which would exclude the level of the volume fader but would show you how the gain control and other in-line processing are effecting the gain.

  34. You are correct. I mis-spoke when I called it "global". It isn't. A better word would be "persistent". Once you set it, that does become the default for subsequent projects. This is how you can inadvertently end up using a different pan law than you thought was in play.
    1 point
  35. I guess in the long run we are using our ears to mix as well keeping an eye on the meter to make sure we are within safe levels to avoid peaks. Panning in a way is sort of like applying an effect in the way it can alter your mix. So this is important to understand for sure. I just added it to my other list of 1,000 things to remember when mixing audio

  37. i think it depends on the HW mixer - some taper off on a L-R move, some attempt to keep same level (which might raise levels), and some raise levels as you move to L-R. here's an example: a 1604 Mackie mixer uses "constant power" law - probably RMS 0db (which is probably fairly common in older analog mixers). i generally stick with the 0db sin/cos constant power setting in CbB.

  38. I will likely just remove the numbering prefix in the menus when using friendly names. As I explained above I didn’t remove it originally because some drivers don’t provide descriptive titles so I was trying to make less work for users to tweak the name. No need to add more modifiers. I wasn’t aware that the friendly names feature was so popular

  39. Using the Samsung 980 as an example (popular/good NMVe SSDs): 250GB version is warranted for 150-TBW (terabytes written) or 5 years (whichever comes first). I've seen reports where M1 Macs were writing ~0.682TB of data per day to the onboard SSD. If the onboard SSD has the same specs as the Samsung 980, it could potentially fail after ~220 days. You should have a backup of your boot drive (no matter what you're running). With that backup in hand, I'd not get overly obsessed about it. It's a tool. Tools are meant to be used. Of course, it's a whole lot easier to replace the boot drive in a PC (vs the M1 MBP, MBA, and Mini).
