  1. Since reading about the Sonarworks profiles for headphones, I've been wondering whether there's a good way to create a custom profile based on your own specific hearing loss using data taken from an audiogram. Creating mixes that translate well is hard enough under the best of circumstances. It's even harder when you know that what you hear may not be the same as what other people hear even if they're listening in the same room as you. If you have hearing aids, and I do, my understanding is they're not designed to approximate the experience of normal hearing. They can be tuned to enhance specific frequencies where you have deficits, but generally only in the range of human speech and not, for example, in the very low and very high frequencies. Thoughts?
  2. Dave, have you listened to "Lyle Lovett and His Large Band"? The CD, at least back when I bought it, was mastered at a much lower level than most recent recordings and sounds great on a good system. Clever songwriting and fine arrangements too.
  3. Thanks, Jim. I figured there was no good way around it when MS decides they want me to update.
  4. My Windows 10 Home PC says 1903 is available: "When you're ready for the update, select "Download and install now."" Can I put this off indefinitely?
  5. Yes, I saw a video or blog somewhere that talked about using Melodyne as a composition tool. It's been very helpful to me for working out harmony parts that I can practice singing until I'm ready to actually record the part.
  6. As the shock starts to wear off, you'll face the challenge of surviving the next weeks and months. Like others have said, you can't rush it, you just live it and give yourself time to heal. Take care.
  7. Hopefully not too off topic, this Pearls Before Swine riff on the Abbot and Costello "who's on first" bit: https://www.gocomics.com/pearlsbeforeswine/2014/10/19
  8. You can also do this with the Process > Find/Change command. It's a little clunkier than the Event Inspector, but it's an extremely powerful way to manipulate many different attributes of MIDI data.
  9. A lot of us old guys remember when it was a big deal to have four tracks (tape) to work with. While I'd never go back to that, it helped you develop a certain mindset about arranging and recording. You really had to think about what was needed to get the song across as well as what you could do without. Now I try to remember to ask myself "do I really need five guitar tracks?" or whatever.
  10. Mine just started working about a week ago. Seems intermittent though.
  11. Belated condolences to his family and friends.
  12. Glad you're hanging in there, Dave. You help make this forum a better place for all of us.
  13. I'm surprised Joni Mitchell and Neil Young haven't been mentioned yet.
  14. Sorry I don't have an answer, but I've had the same experience with the mouse cursor suddenly getting weird. This happened to me one or two versions ago, so it doesn't sound like something that changed in the latest CbB update. Does this bug always happen in the same project for you?

    Jamstix Sale

I bought Jamstix the last time there was a good sale. Still haven't had time to really dig into it. Here's a question for Jamstix users -- say I've got my song laid out and tweaked the styles and everything until I'm happy with it all, does Jamstix play different fills, etc., every time it plays the song? Or does it keep playing the same things every time through until I change something?
  16. Glad to hear you're up and about. Hope your recovery continues to go well.
  17. Thanks for the graphic, msmcleod! That's what I was trying to describe in my previous post.
  18. Once I opened a project from a previous version of SONAR. Couldn't see any buses, but I knew they used to be there. It turned out the bus pane was collapsed at the bottom of the screen, and I had to drag up the track/bus divider to see the buses again.
  19. This works for me too. For songs with vocal parts, I find it helpful to sing a scratch track before recording all the audio tracks. Sometimes the tempo that seemed right for the guitar or piano part isn't comfortable to sing to and needs to be changed. Like other people have mentioned, I like to use Tempo view to map out tempo changes throughout the song -- maybe speed up the choruses a little, add a slight pause at the end of a bridge, or slowly increase the tempo throughout the song. I just keep tinkering with Tempo view until everything feels right. My workflow dates back to a time when there was no simple, reliable way to extract a tempo from a freely recorded audio track. If you wanted to use MIDI drums or other parts, it was easier to record to a loop or click from the beginning. I'd be curious to hear more from people who use Melodyne or some other tool to extract a tempo from a freely recorded audio track. How well does this work? Do you have any tips for getting the best results? I could see the benefit of this approach if it's workable.
  20. Thanks for sharing that. It sounds like your father lived an amazing life. Condolences to you and your family.
  21. I switched from a Delta 1010LT to a Focusrite 6i6 when I bought a new PC. Been happy with it ever since.
  22. Still using Thunderbird here. I find it easier to keep things organized than my online gmail account.
