  1. Cool, I must be going in the right direction. I very much appreciate the SRV comment, as I have listened to him a lot throughout the years, however, lately I've been listening to Gary Moore. I knew about him all my life, but recently started watching his live videos on YouTube. You're spot on about the drums, and I must constantly keep reminding myself to hit them harder. Many thanks! Thanks Wookie for your kind words! I appreciate your notice of the lyrics, as I tried to make them as universal as possible. There has been a lot going on in the lives of the people in my life and myself, too. You're not the only one who noticed the density of the mix. I originally wrote this as a five piece band: 2 guitars, bass, keyboard, and drums - something that a good garage band could play live. However, Paul Bush encouraged me to give this more thought, and that's my goal for this weekend. Thanks to all, and stay tuned!
  2. Paul, thanks for your input and time! I'm in no hurry to finish this, and all the suggestions I've received have been good. I take your words to heart, so stay tuned!
  3. Many of your songs are hauntingly beautiful, and this is one of them! Great job on stretching your voice and arrangements, and trying out new ideas all the time. We can all use some of that.
  4. Terrific song and performances! This may just be me, but I'd like to hear the lead vocal up a few db's. Otherwise, this is a hit waiting to happen.
  5. Jesse, before you go off into the wild blue yonder, this tune raised the bar for me. I've always thought your guitar playing is understated but excellent. Your understanding of scales is off the charts, therefor, it takes a bit of having a taste for the bizarre, yet you're right on the money! Love it!
  6. OK, I took MichaelJohn's suggestion and lowered the bass and brought up the drums, but just by a few db's. https://soundclick.com/r/s8maw8
  7. Jesse, thanks a million for your encouraging words! I feel that I'm getting closer. Btw, I love your new song; I'll tell you more about that in your post. Thank you MJ for you ears! I'm going to try your idea in a little while. I'm still looking for that balance between speakers and headphones. Bjorn, this is high praise coming from you, my friend! As you can see above, I'm still getting good suggestions and will be trying them out in a little while. I do think it's getting closer to the mark, but I DO love mixing... (the forest is larger today)
  8. I've taken all your suggestions and remixed this just now. I beefed up the drums and redid some parts to tighten it up, I hope. I also added some "ghost" reverb on the lead vox and delay in certain sections. I'm beginning to see the forest in spite of the trees and think that this tune is moving in the right direction. https://soundclick.com/r/s8maw8
  9. OK, thanks guys! More time mixing today! One note: I did intentionally leave out the kick and snare until halfway through verse one, and may yet keep this feature. What do you think?
  10. Thanks for the tips! I am trying to keep everything clean and in its place, but maybe too conservative in my approach. I'll be trying out your ideas.
  11. Hi everyone! Here's a song that I've worked on for weeks, and I've mixed and rerecorded it many times and have finally decided to put it up for advice. I feel like I'm in the middle of the forest at this point, so thanks in advance for any and all help. It can be found here: https://soundclick.com/r/s8maw8 Mix #4: https://soundclick.com/r/s8n3ik (based on Paul Bush's suggestion to rethink the mix)
  12. Kevin, I really like this song, and I think it's well played and the high energy comes through in spite of the heavy reverb. Sometimes when an element like your lead vocal is heavily effected, other elements like your guitars and drums can be dry, and the mind will still hear the reverb on everything. The way I hear it now sounds like every track went through the same reverb and has the same level of depth. Maybe reduce the reverb on some of the tracks? All in all, this still rocks!
  13. Both the music and video are mesmerizing! I particularly like the stereo separation and the drum work. I like the way the vocals morph from f/x to clarity throughout. I always learn something from you.
  14. I remember this song quite well because I used to jam on it in the day. As always, your covers are uniquely your own while paying homage to the original. You have very good taste!
  15. Another fine example of your brilliant song writing and singing! This takes me back to the days of Gerry Rafferty. Overall, it seems a bit trebly and shy in the low end, but it still has a lot of magic.
  16. Gary, this is a very good song with several options for the mix. I listened to mix 4 and it sounds big and clear on my system. I never worry about your end product because you never disappoint. Good job!
  17. Mark, this really hits the spot! You captured the essence of the song while putting your own stamp on it. Thumbs up!!
  18. Bravo, Nigel, bravo! There's a continuity that runs through your music, yet each song is so unique. The video is terrific!
  19. Nice. This has some ear candy, some changes, and is not too long. All in all, it's tasteful, and it sounds like it could lead to something.
  20. Very poignant music for your companion. Congratulations, and sorry for your loss.
  21. You nailed this one, Fred! You are like a living history book! Your great talent is conveying the joy of this music, and it becomes contagious. Next!
  22. As always, good musicianship and production. Persistency pays off!
  23. Tom, thanks for your advice! The instrument is called UDU MEINL in a Toontrack percussion pack. I've never used it before, and after going over the song with a fine-toothed comb, I think I know where it works and where it doesn't. I'll be working on this tomorrow, and I really appreciate your ears and kind words.
