Definitely good enough to use with a backing track, probably not acapella. I think the software they used on John Lennon's "Now and Then" was Peter Jackson's Rolls Royce of stem extraction, but the one I use is very affordable with decent enough results.

I was quite enjoying it until the squeaking came in at 54s. I found that a little irritating to be honest. Otherwise, I liked it 👍

Hi Mark, yeah I might have a go at playing it again - that solo (which goes a bit off the tracks at the end) is locked in with the acoustics on the original track but with a little jiggery-pokery I should be able to create a new solo section, if that makes sense.

Hi all, I've been tinkering with AI stems again. The bones of this recording "stem" from the early 2000s. I've added bass and brushed drums, along with some hopefully subtle strings and some Rhodes. Hi Mark, good to hear from you again and thanks for your concern. Nothing to worry about thankfully, just got my plate full of other stuff at the moment - a young grandson to look after and two offspring's weddings looming. You know how it is ? Hope you're well ? OK (my) panic over. I discovered that if I uncheck "enabled" under "keyboard shortcuts" then behaviour returns to normal. Quite why that should be I have no idea but I'm just happy to have it working again. Sorry for the post, I wish there was a delete button ?

Hi all, After years of working correctly, suddenly my Alesis v49 sustain won't work with CbB. I can press and release a note and it's fine. If I press and hold a note, then press and hold sustain, then release the note, it sustains. Keeping sustain pressed, if I press any other notes then they won't sound until I release the sustain pedal. I recorded this sequence with a piano plug-in in CbB and when I opened the event list there were no control events at all, only notes. I've tried this with other piano plug-ins, and also with my piano with its built-in sustain pedal, same result. I've also tested the setup with MIDI-OX and it reports that everything's as it should be. The only thing I can think is that I've inadvertently changed a preference setting in CbB but they all look OK to me. Any ideas anyone? I hope so ? Many thanks.

First of all, let me declare up front that I have no musical training at all, I'm completely self-taught, so what I'm about to ask might well seem obvious. I have Cinestrings loaded up in my DAW and what I want is to play chords with a sustain articulation but with the attack of a staccato articulation. When I select sustain, the sound of the strings gently fades in, but I want it in my face the moment the bow touches the strings. I hope that makes sense and I'm sure it must be possible but I'm missing something. I have the same issue with other VSTs such as The Orchestra Complete. Any clues? Thank you.

You have to have a reasonable quality original to start with but I've been amazed at just how much information it's been able to dig out of mine.

Some very nice vocals and guitar on this, well done. I found the percussion a little intrusive and repetitive but that's a personal preference I guess.

The "room" I've been playing in of late is marked "Stem Separation" - the ability to isolate instruments and voices from a mono recording. This is the earliest/oldest one I've been able to process in that way. The original recording dates from 48 years ago. It comprised me singing and playing drums simultaneously whilst my friend (who wrote the tune) played the rhythm guitar. What I've been able to do is to separate all three elements of the recording and use them in the CbB DAW. For the guitar, I combined the two halves of the song and panned each one left/right. For the drums, I was able to sample the snare and bass drums and use the samples in a Superior Drummer 3 kit. I could have used a built-in kit but I wanted to retain some 70s authenticity (maybe I should have lit some candles and turned off the electricity too ?) whilst keeping the tempo consistent. I then added some other bits and bobs and this is the result. I should warn you that the lyrics are ridiculously naïve and overly "flower power", with a couple of phrases stolen from John Lennon, but I've always wanted to "finish" the song and I think I have now. I always know that your stuff is going to be a bit off the wall and avant garde and this doesn't disappoint. Overall an enjoyable listen, although I noticed a few timing issues here and there but that might well be intentional. Good voice. A cross between David Byrne, Michael Stipe and Neil Hannon to my ears ?

It's a damned sight better than the Xmas song I once tried to write ? Only critiques I have are that I find the intro a bit uninviting, if that makes sense, and I find the mastering a tad harsh, but otherwise, great job ?
