Is the upgrade working with CbB? I saw some posts that there were problems.

It's easier to control updates. I have pro on my DAW and it notifies me when updates are available. On my laptop I say I have a metered connection so it won't download on it's own, but I have to remember to update.

I haven't used it, but in the track fx right click and select Insert External Insert. It has send, return, and delay compensation parameters.

In the specs it says it has direct monitoring and the phones have source select. Make sure you're not direct monitoring and that the phones are set to the same source as the speakers.

This is a great delay for Frippertronics / ambient stuff. I just wish he had a version with a longer delay time. IIRC this is about 10 seconds.

As a guitarist I treat amp sims differently in terms of gain staging if I'm recording with the amp sim as opposed to recording clean without an amp sim. I gain stage after the amp sim. I know that TH-2 & TH-3 have an input meter and you want to adjust the level of the input signal to that. I haven't checked to see what that level is in dBs. Amp sims tend to behave like the HW and HW responds to the level of the signal. Personally I think the level of the input signal should be what sounds good with a particular amp sim. Given that the amp settings will also be based on what sound you want. The amps sims I have have an output level and that is where I adjust the level for gain staging. In regards to fx within an amp sim guitarists gain stage in their fx chains for tone. Some guitarists use a compressor as a boost to drive the front end of the amp. As a guitarist the more an fx behaves like the real HW the better the sim. I wouldn't expect a signal to be neutral going thru an fx chain. These days I tend to use amp sims to practice and the projects I have saved to practice are set at output levels for practicing not recording. I suspect a lot of presets may be designed to sound good as you audition them. My two cents.

As a guitarist I'm not sure about old skool and new skool. It seems like a lot of guitar fx started in studios. Flanging was done by slowing down a tape reel after the signal was recorded. I thought Kramer put Jimi's guitar thru a Leslie after it was recorded. Duane Eddy's echo chamber was a water tank, and so on. I think some engineers can be pretty creative.

I think it depends on your audio IF. If you need to add high end that may indicate that you don't have 1 meg ohm input impedance. What does the IF say about input impedance? I normally use a guitar pre-amp into a mixer and the mixer goes into the audio IF, but I don't have a high end IF. I've been using a VG-99 for guitar modelling and I'm switching over to an SY-1000. If I'm not using guitar modelling I use an ADA MP1 that's programmed clean and neutral. The SY-1000 sounds pretty good, once I have it setup I may use that to record guitar.

You can apply fx in real-time. You can be recording or just listening. I tend to practice guitar thru amp sims any more rather than amps. There can be any number of problems. Make sure you are not monitoring thru your audio IF - some audio IFs allow you monitor. Input echo must be enabled, the fx must be enabled, make sure the fx are not by passed.

Compressors are a dynamics processor, they affect amplitude, so it can be fairly subtle. Like many things it can take some ear training. I think it's helpful to start off using compression as a tool. Compressors are used to keep a signal level, you can flatten peaks. Finger pickers picked them up pretty quickly - it helps tame volume differences between fingers, the occasional too loud or too soft pick. They can be helpful with rhythm guitar. In flattening peaks you can then increase the volume and that will give you more sustain and can also fatten the sound a little. Like many tools if you start to use them you'll find that different compressors behave and sound different from each other. It's a good idea to read articles about guitar pedal compressors and check out youtube.

I have two - a Roland FC-300 that I use to control a guitar synth/modeller and a Yamaha MFC10 that I use to control Ableton Live. The Yamaha is setup using note on/off. I was going to program another bank with controller data, but I'll wait until I see your video.

For me it's a quick way to sketch out ideas. My workflow is different than what Chandler demonstrates. I have a guitar synth/modeller and have patches setup in that. Once I record a loop I keep it playing and will audition some sounds - normally I'm not tweaking the sounds, but I may. I'll play with different rhythmic/tonal/harmonic variations for the next part until I have something I like and then record that. I have a midi pedal board so I'm not mousing around with the recording, although I am with the synth - I usually select patches from the browser. Rinse and repeat. CbB doesn't do sound on sound recording with audio. You can do different loop lengths and don't have to stop to convert a recording to a groove clip and stretch to the length required. It's a different work flow. For me it's playing around and working out ideas. If I happen to get something I like I'll export and then record it later.

You should consider doing one on setting up a midi foot controller. The documentation doesn't seem to match the implementation. I got it working thru trial and error. Also, there are selections for controller under MIDI for Note on/off, Note index, Note index(on), but I don't see anyway to select a given note - 0, 1, 2, 3, and so on. Is there a way to use note on/off to control the vst? Am I missing something?

I'm not familiar with Spitfire's Soft Piano VST, but from my experience pianos don't necessarily sustain notes. They have a sustain pedal that you need to hold down. EPs may not sustain notes. The fact that you have a whole note doesn't mean that a particular instrument will sound that long. What happens depends both on the real instrument and how it's implemented in a given vst. If you have a MIDI controller what happens when you hold down a key?

That depends. In the world of HW and SW amp modellers and isolated speakers and so on you can add fx after the amp, after the speaker. OD may work, but it depends on the signal and the OD that's used. Wah may work, but will be different, but of course, you can put a wah before of after fuzz/OD in an analog signal chain. If you record only the sound of your amp and particularly if it's distorted you'll be limited to what you can do after that.

One thing to note is that in the track inspector there is a program change field. Make sure it is blank.

Well, I noodle around on guitar. I know that an OD pedal sounds different before the preamp and after.
