Very nice and accurate cover. Good work with the vocals and the string section seems to be spot on based on my memory of the song. I was not aware of the background so I found that informative. Two complaints: (1) the track begins with a click. My guess is this is due to the lack of silence leading into the start of the audio track. Some players purge their buffer before starting playback and will pop or click if audio begins before the buffer finishes being purged. (2) The overall track volume level is high relative to other audio I listen to. I don't know how close to 0db full scale you were shooting for but it sounded pretty close. Having said all that, you should be pleased with the track as it's a job well done!

Request: MUTE button in the VSTi window header
Jim Fogle replied to pulsewalk's topic in Feedback Loop
@Starship Krupa, How would you expect a VSTi to interpret a freeze button? My first thought would be for the VSTi to retain whatever preset, setting or preference is in use when the freeze button is enabled. Was that your thought too or something different? -
Request: MUTE button in the VSTi window header
Jim Fogle replied to pulsewalk's topic in Feedback Loop
+1. I like the idea of a mute button on the VSTi window header. -
@Kevin Perry, I agree with you that it seems every effect and virtual instrument plugin specification has incompatibility and support issues. It's too bad DAW manufacturers can't create an association to create and maintain a universal plugin standard. Perhaps one similar to the MIDI Association but focused on plugins.

Very good cover Andy. The vocal doubling is interesting. The guitar sounded nice.

Meta, the entity formally known as Facebook, has written an audio encoder that uses artificial intelligence to encode audio ten times more efficiently than a MP3 encoder. They introduce it on their Meta AI blog here.

Pedal Steel / Lap Steel / Resonator synths
Jim Fogle replied to Russell's topic in Instruments & Effects
Impact Soundworks Pedal Steel is one of the best sounding pedal steel plugins I've heard but the $179 US suggested retail price is a pretty expensive entry fee. Pedal Steel requires the version 5.7 Kontakt Free Player or higher. It also works with the full version of Kontakt 5.7 or higher. This is the only plugin webpage I've seen that actually states what instrument was used while recording the samples. The MIDI files used to create the examples are included in the download. It's worth taking the time to download the manual, look at the videos and listen to the audio examples. Another great sounding pedal steel guitar plugin is Tod's Virtual Pedal Steel Guitar. The price is $149 US but the plugin comes with a STEEP learning curve. The website even suggests looking at the tutorials prior to purchasing. Requires the full version of Kontakt 5.8 or higher. There is a world of difference between a lap steel and a pedal steel guitar. The pedal steel guitar has foot and knee pedals the musician uses to adjust string tuning in real time. The crying sound most people associate with a pedal steel is the musician operating the pedals to create that string bending effect. That sound is close to impossible to replicate with a lap steel. If you want to look at a different lap steel, Orange Tree Samples has their Slide Lap Steel for $79 US. It requires the full version of Kontakt 4.2.4 or higher. However, of the two I prefer the Indiginus product because of the interface. -
Feature Request: auto arm when track(s) selected

@c0d3r, thanks for answering both of my questions with a single answer. The screen shot helps my understanding a lot. -
Please update PDF manual with Bookmarks tree

@User 905133, I understood the time constraint you emphasized in the quote above as an either / or constraint. If I came across as argumentative, that's my mistake and I apologize. I agree with you that you did not do anything improper. My comment should not be considered as a forum "rule". I meant it as a suggestion given for consideration. When several forum members comment on a singular topic it is easier for me to follow. But when the comments flow outside the topic boundaries I sometimes find it difficult to match each comment to a particular subject. My thought is it is fairly easy for a good suggestion to be overlooked when the idea is presented in a thread I don't associate with the idea. Again, I apologize. -
Feature Request: auto arm when track(s) selected
Jim Fogle replied to c0d3r's topic in Feedback Loop
Welcome to Cakewalk. How would you disable the auto-track-arm feature when you are past the recording stage of a project? How would you like the auto-track-arm feature to work if you are still recording (overdubs and punch-ins for example) but are also setting up mixes? -
Allow Duplicate Track to work between 2 open projects

I believe Cakewalk is limited to work inside the project folder. How do you propose getting around that constraint?- 3 replies

Please update PDF manual with Bookmarks tree
Jim Fogle replied to Tim Godfrey's topic in Feedback Loop
@User 905133, While it's nice that both offline and online documentation is available I don't agree that this thread about offline documentation is the proper place to present a suggestion concerning online documentation. It shouldn't be an either /or situation like you presented. I hope you will start a new thread so I and others can discuss your idea in more detail. I do support the original suggestion of bookmarks in the offline PDF manual. -
Nice alternate arrangement.

For those not familiar with the original, I've posted a link to the audio here. As you can tell, stereo mixing was still relatively new in 1966. The song has an interesting history you can read here. Steve's arrangement is very close to the original arrangement.

You didn't mention if you are looking for a solid body, acoustic or semi-acoustic. Thomann is a prominent European online music store that sells their own line of instruments under the Harley Benton brand. Here is a link to Thomann USA's line up of solid body electric basses and here is the link for acoustic and semi-acoustic basses.

@HOOK, does the Sonitus fx Surround effect work similar? It ships with Cakewalk. Soundstage was a nice plugin. I used it a lot when I was first learning about audio production. I found the visual helped me get background vocals and instrumentation panning and levels like I wanted them.

Some interesting songs. I really like "Lawyers Are Liars". Thanks for posting the album link.

There are also links to online and offline reference guides at the top of each forum webpage. But ... The fact that reference guides exist should not diminish the suggestion to look over the pop-up hints and improve them whenever possible. Obviously sometime in the past the Sonar\Cakewalk team thought pop-up hints were a good idea so why not make the hints the best that they can be?

Is there a SDK for programming CakeWalk only specific plugins?
Jim Fogle replied to GTsongwriter's question in Q&A
Per page 693 of the Cakewalk Reference Manual: None of these plug-in types are specific to Cakewalk by Bandlab. In most cases there is not a lot to be gained by a DAW developer creating a proprietary plug-in standard. Those that do typically contract out plug-in development so the in-house team can concentrate on the DAW. -

Strummaker IV by Indiginus. Requires the full version of Kontakt 4 or higher. $59 US. -

Audacity has audio loopback capability built-in. That capability gives you the ability to record what you hear coming from your computer headphones or speakers. You might be able to use either the standalone or 32 bit version of the Proteus VX synth plugin to generate sound and Audacity to record the audio output.

Are the audio files single notes or Chords? It makes a difference to correctly answer your question. Cakewalk uses Melodyne or Drum Replacer to convert audio to midi. The Melodyne demo that is available in the Cakewalk installer bundle can convert single note audio to midi. Higher versions of Melodyne can convert audio with chords to midi. Because Melodyne and Cakewalk utilize ARA2 to communicate it likely is the most convenient way to convert audio to midi. Either way, (1) create a midi track, (2) highlight the audio to be converted and (3) drag the audio to the midi track. I haven't used Drum Replacer so I hesitate to try and describe how to use it to convert audio to midi.
