I am a bit confused by the above - as no matter what drive Sonar and CbB are installed on, don't both programs set the Registry parameter for VSTScanPath to point to C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities\VstScan.exe?
-
The VstScan.exe program should be in the C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities folder. Can you please go into Control Panel, and take some screen shots of the various Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable libraries you have installed on your system? I am wondering if there are some missing, perhaps. Here is a partial list of the ones I have, so if you could grab screen shots of yours and post them in this thread, I can try to figure out if you are missing any:

This happens with some of the Reaktor instruments too, and they even have strange things controlling pitch bend, so that once playback is stopped - some instruments go to zero volume, while some others drop in pitch a whole step. Pretty dumb instrument design. Bob Bone

crackling sound when using some effects and plugins
Robert Bone replied to Samuel Sheehan's topic in Instruments & Effects
1) Is your Driver Mode in Cakewalk set to ASIO? (Edit>Preferences>Driver Settings). After settings that, you may need to select you audio interface as input and output Audio Devices, also in preferences. 2) Do you happen have any effects plugins loaded into the project, such as any kind of convolution reverb or linear-phase type of effects? If so, thes generally require really large ASIO Viffer Sizes (1024 or 2048) to have enough rooom to do their thing. Quick way to test if effects are causing your issues - hit the FX button to the right of the transport controls up at the top of the Cakewalk window, and that will temporarily disengage all effects - then hit Play, and see if your issues disappear. If so, then one or more of your effects plugins is likely meant to be used during mixing and not during recording, and again for those you need a large ASIO Buffer Size. Hit FX again to toggle the effects processing back on for all loaded plugins in the project. 3) If your computer has WiFi drivers that are enabled, these can sometimes cause streaming audio interference, and if so, folks generally 'disable' the WiFi drivers just before launching Cakewalk, and after finishing their Cakewalk session, they go back in and 'enable' the WiFi drivers again. You can do this in Device Manager, expand the Network Adapters category, then right-click on your WiFi driver, and click on either Enable or Disable, to set it or reset it. If running Windows 10, you can right-click on your Windows Start Button, then simply click on Device Manager from the list of options presented. Bob Bone -
I never use the inherent audio within Vegas - I have Vegas Pro 15, I always work up any audio inside Cakewalk, including any of the original audio track from the original video, along with any additional tracks I want to add, such as backing tracks of music, using the video display in Cakewalk, to make sure everything lines up properly, and then I export the completed audio composite so it can be pulled into the Vegas project. That avoids having to deal with any particular weirdness or shortcomings within Vegas' audio processing. By doing it this way, I let Vegas excel at its video processing, and I also get to leverage Cakewalk's excellent audio processing. It is a good combo. (Not trying to hijack this thread - just a quick reply to the quote excerpt from above) Bob Bone

EastWest instruments problem fast bouncing to tracks
Robert Bone replied to mfanning's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
I have had fast bounce issues (and others), with EW Play, and once in a while with other content, so I usually just turn off Fast Bounce, when working with content from plugins that have given me fast bounce issues in the past. My desktop DOES have 128 GB of memory, so I would give that a shot, but I got rid of my EW subscription, and am loaded up with Kontakt libraries anyways, so I just don't encounter issues with it anymore, and Kontakt seems to render/bounce just fine, with Fast Bounce. I do wish I had been aware of the notion to load more of the EW content into memory, because surely 128 GB would be plenty. Best of luck to those who find success with moving sounds into memory for use with Fast Bounce - wonderful time saver. Bob Bone -
I have 2 DAW desktops and 1 laptop. Both destops use AMD, and the laptop uses Intel. and work great. AMD can produce more heat/noise, but I use liquid coolers, and temps are fine.

I am VERY wary of my big dumb fingers, because of all the key bindings / shortcut keys. Glad you are sorted out - hitting the Scroll Lock key seems to befuddle lots of folks, as an observation on threads in the past. Bob Bone

I see in your earlier post in this thread, that you are/were running VstScan.exe version 6.0.2.0, I have 6.0.3.0 on my system. Are you still running version 6.0.2.0? Also, from what I gather, VstScan may be fighting with some other app that is running at the same time. Can you please list all apps running, as well as the background ones you see down in the Windows System Tray area of your desktop screen? (there is likely a little arrow pointing up, next to the little speaker icon down by the data and time in the bottom right part of the task bar, and if you click on that little arrow, it will expand to show you little icons for the background tasks that are running, like your antivirus software, perhaps NVIDIA settings, etc., ) Thanks, Bob Bone

Kontakt 6 Crashes Cakewalk and SONAR
Robert Bone replied to William W. Saunders, Jr.'s topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
Any error info, or mini dump? -
Could your midi connections have changed on either computer? Perhaps the internal assignment is different, even though it shows the same logica name for your USB connected devices? Bob Bone

Kontakt 6 Crashes Cakewalk and SONAR
Robert Bone replied to William W. Saunders, Jr.'s topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
I use Kontakt pretty much every day - I suggest that you: 1) Run Native Access, to see if any Kontakt or other updates to NI products you have installed 2) In Windows, go to: Settings > Update and Security > and see if there are any Optional Updates waiting for you to explicitly tell it to download and install. Even if you have automatic updates turned on, there are additional updates that require manual clicking to download and install. If you find that there are some that indeed need to be applied, then once those finish, even though it will say you are up to date - still check one more time for updates, in case there are updates available that follow the ones you just finished applying. This frequently happens. I am current on Windows and Native Instruments maintenance, and Kontakt works like a champ in Cakewalk. Hopefully, the above was what was causing your issues, and they will hopefully be resolved, once any outstanding maintenance is applied. Bob Bone -
Mine is running at 32c at moment, which is wonderful. That is why I have the CPU liquid cooler
-
Yup to control things on different channels, you do need to set the midi output channel on your 2nd track, to send midi data on channel 2. I have to do the same thing when controlling multiple loaded instruments in a single Kontakt instance - each instrument gets its own midi channel, so for each midi track, I set the midi output channel for that tracks, to match the corresponding midi channel for the instrument I want that midi track to deal with. It's just the way it works Bob Bone

I have a liquid CPU cooler on my 2 DAW desktops, and they are awesome. I do not overclock whatsoever, because heat can shorten the lifespan of CPU, memory, or video components. I just figure that even without overclocking, using a liquid radiator will keep the CPU running cooler, which is always a good thing. I also have another liquid radiator on the graphics card in one of the desktops, while the other one has the graphics integrated already. I think them to be good to use, myself. Not actually needed, if not overclocking, but helpful nonetheless, at helping the CPU to live a long happy life of comfort Bob Bone

I happen to have 3 computers set up for DAW usage, and some 2 use Intel CPU's and 1 use AMD. Over the years, I have generally favored AMD over Intel, because of the bang for the buck, and AMD CPU's offer more cores for less money, than Intel CPU's. That being said, Thunderbolt 3 is currently available on certain motherboards for Intel CPU's, whereas to the best of my knowledge, no motherboards built for AMD CPU's currently have Thunderbolt 3 headers needed for having Thunderbolt 3. That will change, but it is the way things currently are. The reason Thunderbolt 3 is so attractive to me, is that there are now multiple audio interfaces available, that have Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, and my first experience with that, is having a massively upgraded Dell Alienware 17 R5 laptop, with 2 PCIe M.2 2280 NVME 2 TB drives, and a 2 TB 2.5" SATA III SSD, along with a Thunderbolt 3 port and an Intel CPU. That laptop is BLAZING fast, and it is coupled with a UAD Arrow Thunderbolt 3 audio interface. Amazing speed, and the Thunderbolt 3 protocol supports up to 40 Gb/sec transfer speeds. In the past 5 weeks, I did a bunch, like a BUNCH, of evaluation of laptops for a couple friends looking to use laptops for dual roles of live performance and for music production, and they were interested in having a Thunderbolt 3 port to be paired with a new Presonus Quadra Tunderbolt 3 audio interface. I noticed that there are now sub-$1000 laptops with a combination of a primary drive of type M.2 (some were M.2 NVME and some were M.2 SATA III), while also having a Thunderbolt 3 port. That is a GREAT combination - each also had 16 GB of memory, and Intel CPU's. I just checked, and finally see a motherboard for AMD CPU's, with Thunderbolt 3 support, which could make things quite interesting - I know nothing about this particular motherboard, as of yet, as I literally found it 5 minutes ago: https://www.newegg.com/asrock-x570-phantom-gaming-itx-tb3/p/N82E16813157891?Item=N82E16813157891&Tpk=thunderbolt 3 motherboard Please note that I am not particularly suggesting purchasing, or not, any motherboards from New Egg - the link is provided so that you can examine the specs of the motherboard. Same for the next link, it is simply because New Egg had a Thunderbolt 3 search filter, that returned a wide selection of motherboards for Intel CPU's that have Thunderbolt 3 ports: https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?d=thunderbolt+3+motherboard One more link - I found this January 2020 review of motherboards with Thunderbolt 3 support, which might be good to take a look at, if Thunderbolt 3 is something you might be interested in, whether for now or for later - it is a site for laptops, but this is a review of desktop motherboards: https://thunderboltlaptop.com/best-thunderbolt-3-motherboards/ SO - I generally find AMD CPU's give a great 'bang for the buck', in terms of the number of cores at a good price, while currently, there are far more motherboards for Intel CPU's, that have Thunderbolt 3 ports. If I was building a new DAW and not looking for Thunderbolt 3 support, I would almost certainly go with AMD, and if looking to also have Thunderbolt 3 ports, would look carefully at any AMD-based motherboard that had it, though for now would also definitely evaluate Intel-based motherboards for that support, as there are so many more to choose from. Some plugins do generate a bit of noise, when they are in some demo mode or unauthorized - some Windows Updates can cause some plugins to decide they are not running on an authorized system, even though that very same system WAS fine - it depends on how those plugins determine they are on a new machine or not, and those methods for coming up with a secret formula that they rely on, can interpret the computer has changed, when really it was just some Windows Updates that were applied. I have had this happen to me in the past. Bob Bone

Constant Audio Dropouts and HUGE Latency
Robert Bone replied to Helos Bonos's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
What are the Cakewalk-reported latency values > Preferences > Audio > Driver Settings? Also, if glitches were recorded, in any clips, even fixing the issues for future recording will not fix what was already captured. What happens when you launch a brand new project, and record, using no effects, and an ASIO Buffer Size of either 64 or 128 samples? Bob Bone -
AWESOME! I am going to play with this. Bob Bone

Leave the old ones - they may still be referenced by other stuff - and they all live happily alongside each other. Bob Bone

Hey, Joel - some of those optional updates might be big cumulative updates, or other ones that might resolve some of your issues - worth looking at in more detail. I always check every couple of weeks, and apply any such optional updates in Windows Updates, and I am completely current on all Windows 10 maintenance, and have zero crashes or issues with things going south. Upgrading from Windows 10 1809 to 1909
Robert Bone replied to kitekrazy1's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
Sorry to hear of these issues - I have Windows 10, and a Steinberg/Yamaha UR-22 as well, but have not had to reinstall its drivers since I built the computer - though I will indeed check to see if there are new drivers for it (sounds like there are). Is it possible Windows Updates, like optional ones, have not been installed? Those require explicit action in Windows Update, to get those installed - you can quickly check by going to Settings > Updates and Security, and looking right below the Check for Updates button. If there are optional updates waiting for direction to download and install, they will be displayed there. Perhaps that is contributing to these issues? Bob Bone -
CW not showing me templates for a new project
Robert Bone replied to BOB OC's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
Good news - can you please edit your initial post in this thread, and add '(Solved)' to your subject line of that post? Thanks, Bob Bone -
I think he was referring to the memory and storage used by the download process, and not his PC specs, as a guess. Is it possible that there is missing Windows Update maintenance to be applied? To check, go to Settings > Update and Security, and look below the Check for Updates button - any optional updates, like cumulative ones, may need explicit action to actually begin their download and install, and perhaps that might help your downloads to work better. Just a thought - and is a quick check, in any case. Bob Bone

I am not sure what you mean by the term flaming. Sorry - can you elaborate please? Thanks. Bob Bone
